Using an aperture of f16 and a slow shutter speed (1/6) the passing train is put out of focus and blurred while the girl remains in focus. The speed of the train creates very strong horizontal lines which is juxtaposed with the vertical, stillness of the girl.

... on an Epson R-D1x using a Novoflex LEM/LEI adapter for LTM lenses to Leica M-Mount bayonet.

Caveat emptor: That adapter does not allow this lens to be focused to infinity because of the spring-loaded infinity-locking bolt. You have to focus the lens to around 10 meters before mounting the adapter. In actual terms this is not a problem because you can focus to 12 meters. and even at largest aperture the depth of field will be large enough to cover all larger distances. So, no sweat.

Even wide open (okay, I mean at f/3.5), sharpness is acceptable around the center - if you don't enlarge the image too much, which of course people did not do when that lens was new - but the image goes very soft in the corners. Nice contrast and overall a very "vintage" look.

Test conditions were admittedly rather harsh - 8:30 in the morning in early January with a complete, dense overcast means very little light. The next test should be in sunny weather, stopped down. Sharpness should then improve significantly.

The graininess comes courtesy of Epson/Seiko.

London bus cavalcade - Regent Street

This is my portrait with an object. I decided to use my grandfather for this photo because I wanted to show his passion for photography and how long he has had it. I had him sit outside with a black shirt on and in front of a black screen-door. I asked for him to use the oldest camera he still has, which was this Japanese Ricolet that my grandparents got as a gift in the early 1950's. Editing included boosting contrast and converting to B&W. (3648x5472)

How did you add emotional/conceptual depth to this portrait?

I wanted this photo to show my grandfathers hobby of photography which began close to 60 years ago. I tried to capture an image that shows a man who still uses the equipment that was created in his youth, showing the reader how long my grandfather has been taking pictures and how humans age more than machines do. My goal was to have a dark background to create a mysterious or suspicious look that will intrigue the viewer. The shirt and the background totally blended together, really adding to the effect and making the viewer question where this man came from and what he is photographing.

Edible Uses: Fruit,

Fruit - raw or cooked. A thin, rather juicy flesh. It is sometimes eaten. There is some debate as to whether the fruit is edible or slightly toxic. The fruit is about 10mm in diameter and contains 2 - 3 small seeds. An extract of the bark, with the bitterness removed (by drying?) is a common flavoring for soft drinks, baked goods and ice cream.

MEDICINAL USES: Laxative, Purgative,

Cascara has been widely used as a gentle laxative that restores tone to the bowel muscles and thus makes repeated doses unnecessary. The bark is used; it was once harvested on a commercial basis from wild trees and on plantations in western N. America. Today there are no longer any local markets for cascara bark harvested from the wild. Thje bark should be harvested in the autumn or spring, at least 12 months before it is used medicinally, in order to allow the more violent purgative effect to be mollified with age. Three year old bark is considered to be the best age. It is considered suitable for delicate and elderly persons and is very useful in cases of chronic constipation. The bark also has tonic properties promoting gastric digestion and appetite. As well as its uses as a laxative, it is taken internally in the treatment of digestive complaints, hemorrhoids, liver problems and jaundice. This remedy should be used with caution since in excess it causes vomiting and diarrhea. It should not be prescribed for pregnant or lactating women, or patients with intestinal obstruction. An infusion of the bark is sometimes painted over finger nails in the hope that the bitter taste will deter the person from biting their nails.

CAUTION: There is the suggestion that this species could be mildly poisonous. Excessive use can cause cramps and diarrhea. Limit treatment to 8-10 days. Long term use can be habit forming. Fresh cascara can cause a bloody diarrhea and vomiting. The bark should be aged for at least 1 year, or heat treated. Do not use on children.

Other Uses : Dye, Green, Wood

A green dye is obtained from the bark. Plants are sometimes grown in America as an ornamental hedge. Wood - light, soft, not strong. Used for making the handles of small tools.

PLANTS FOR A FUTURE www.pfaf.org

'I Thought I Could Find You There' It's a contemporary portrait photography project, about people in the places where I used to go with my father when I was little, although I'm not concentrating my work into images of locations but much more on people who are re-creating different memories with their own lives and experiences.

Who are the people in the same places which plenty of memories were built on? What do they look like? How different and how similar they are to my father? How do they use the same spaces of my memories to create their future memoir?

This collection of faces in the gigantic city of Sao Paulo is not ended yet, this project still under work.

This was a rather plain tan wall (see two pictures back) with evidence that there had been a large red key logo for Key Bank. I inverted the image to get some interest to it, and have fun with some artistic techniques. There wasn't much rust at all, but I made it look like it. I like how the rain streaks show more in this version where water ran down behind the lower part of the old sign. I used some equalization, oil paint, embossing and color balance effects, Best viewed at least moderately large to see them.

Re-edited and Re-posted - 28/09/11

Ephesus used to be an important ancient Greek city. It later became a major roman city and in 1 century B.C had a population of 250,000. The ruins of Ephesus are still standing despite numerous years having passed, plundering and earthquakes. This is the theatre built over many years. Used for public speeches, plays & dances earlier, it was also used by Gladiators.

Brand new and never used. Had sample filters stuck in the funnel, as well as the filter lifter. The limited warranty slip (another pic) is well-eaten by buggies.

The "modern" Chemex pour-over brewers have a very well-defined pouring spout that is nearly the length of the filter funnel; this Chemex has a very shallow spout at the lip and that's all.

I do believe it's hand-blown, as the machine blow-molded models have bevelled bottoms; this one is flat.
