BLM using satellites to study fishers in southern Oregon

Capturing a fisher in an Oregon forest can be tricky work.
First off, there aren’t many of them.
Secondly, the cat-sized mammal sports retractable claws and a heart rate that can climb to 300 beats per minute when agitated — double a high rate for humans — and like most animals in the wild, they will defend themselves from capture, even if for scientific research.
“They are carnivores and they have amazing capacities of strength and endurance,” said Katie Moriarty, a research wildlife biologist for the U.S. Forest Service.
Moriarty is one of several partners helping the Bureau of Land Management in a first-of-its-kind research project: using GPS collars and satellites to track fisher movements in Oregon.
The end goal is to establish a baseline of habitat information for a species that has been in decline since the trapping and timber industries entered the Western landscape in the 1800s.
In 2014, the West Coast fisher received a “proposed threatened” status by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; but just this week the agency announced the fisher did not warrant listing under the Endangered Species Act.
If land managers like the BLM can learn specific habitat characteristics, they will then be able to make more informed decisions and even potentially figure out why the member of the weasel family is in decline, said Bruce Hollen, a wildlife biologist for the BLM in Oregon and Washington.
“Something about their habitat is affecting their ability to disperse,” said Hollen. “We don't know how come their populations have stayed so small.”
Adult fishers can weigh about 3 to 13 pounds, and can be about 2.5 to 4 feet long. They eat seemingly anything smaller than them that can be discovered in the forest: birds, squirrels, mice, reptiles, insects, vegetation and fruit. They also have the unique ability to hunt and eat porcupines.
Porcupines love to eat Oregon trees and are the reason why there were several efforts to reintroduce fishers to the southern Oregon Cascade Range from the early 1960s to early 1980s.
Those reintroduced fishers were mostly from British Columbia, but also Minnesota, according to a 2003 study published in the international journal Biological Conservation.
Presently, there are only two known fisher populations in Oregon. One is native and one is the reintroduced population. Both home ranges for the distinct fisher populations are slivers in the southwestern portion of the state. Research data now indicates that native fishers have crossed the I-5 boundary from the west and made it into the historic range of the non-native population.
While wildlife biologists agree that any mixed breeding would be interesting, it isn’t always as easy as that for territorial animals.
Moriarty, who works at the Pacific Northwest Research Station, related the moving fishers to a typical American street: “You might be able to walk into somebody’s yard but you won’t be able to live there.”
Chicken meat bait is what draws the curious fishers into the multi-compartment traps. Once inside and anesthetized, the biologists have 30 minutes to affix collars and conduct a number of tests.
Blood, hair and tissue samples are taken for DNA testing. Feet are measured and a tooth is extracted to determine age. The wildlife biologists even check for fleas and ticks during the evaluation, all while monitoring the animal’s temperature.
“You only get them in your hands every so often, so you want to measure as much as you can,” explained Matt Broyles, a BLM wildlife biologist in Klamath Falls contributing to the ongoing research.
Out of the seven fishers captured last October, three adult females got the GPS collars and two adult males were fitted with regular radio telemetry collars. Juveniles were released. The females got priority for the new equipment because they tend to stay within the home range, while males “can decide to go for a long wander,” said Hollen.
“We really want to see what they are doing within their home range — how they use the landscape in that Klamath Falls area,” he said.
The GPS units provided real-time data points every 15 minutes, allowing the team to discern resting sites and den locations inside trees.
So far, the wildlife team, which includes specialists from Oregon State University and the Rocky Mountain Laboratories, is very optimistic about the research study that runs through this July.
“The benefits are exponentially phenomenal,” said Moriarty.

Karim is actually an artist who will show you his work in a nearby gallery if you are interested. At his sidewalk book stall, sales seem secondary to artistic or metaphysical conversations.
Almost everything is for sale somewhere in Nehru Place, but the plazas have a reputation for cut-rate media and clothing. Nehru Place's buildings house big brand storefronts for computers and electronics, as well as countless shops offering supplies and repairs. On the balconies there is more variety in quieter stores, including high-end clothing and fabric boutiques. But the plazas are filled with open-air vendors offering huge discounts on DVDs, software, wallets, shoes, pants, you name it. Some of the best showman vendors work here.

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracles took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the brigth sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS< but still awesome and enough I felt!

História
A pedra fundamental do prédio que seria o Theatro foi lançada em 1896, no centro da praça Marquês do Herval, hoje praça José de Alencar. Mas o projeto não foi concretizado e dois concursos públicos foram realizados. No entanto, a obra realmente construída pouco tem das linhas apresentadas nos concursos. A idéia de construir um teatro jardim foi concebida através do projeto do capitão Bernardo José de Melo. Em 1904, na segunda administração de Nogueira Acioli, é oficialmente autorizada a construção do Theatro José de Alencar através da lei 768, de 20 de agosto.
Porém, passaram-se ainda quatro anos para as obras começarem, exatamente no dia 06 de junho de 1908, quando toda a estrutura metálica já se encontrava em Fortaleza e foi apresentada em praça pública numa grande exposição. As peças metálicas vieram de Glasgow, na Escócia, importadas pela Casa Boris e fundidas pela Walter Mac Farlane & Companhia.
O Theatro José de Alencar foi inaugurado oficialmente no dia 17 de junho de 1910, com a banda sinfônica do Batalhão de Segurança, regida pelos maestros Luigi Maria Smido e Henrique Jorge. Na praça, rodas de fogo, morteiros, foguetes e girândolas num verdadeiro milagre pirotécnico, abrilhantavam a festa. No início do século, ao fazer o projeto arquitetônico do Theatro José de Alencar, o capitão Bernardo José de Mello imaginou um teatro - jardim.Mas o jardim mesmo só foi construído anos depois da festa de inauguração, na reforma de 1974 a abril de 1975. Ele ocupa todo o espaço vizinho ao Theatro, pelo lado leste, onde havia antes um prédio que primeiro abrigou o Quartel de Cavalaria e em seguida o Centro de Saúde. Foi demolido em 1973.
Um novo prédio foi incorporado ao Theatro José de Alencar na reforma de 1989 a 1990. Identificado como anexo, o prédio situa-se no lado oeste, logo atrás da antiga sede da Faculdade de Odontologia. Possui 2.600 metros quadrados e dois pavimentos, com acesso independente pela rua 24 de Maio."

Using the Carol Zilliacus technique, I placed thin strips of clay over a similar background. The white bands are a very thin layer of pearlescent clay.
I used to collect these newspaper movie ads for all the movies I watched in the '80s. For years I had an entire Trapper Keeper folder filled with them. Every one of them were cut out of the Birmingham News. At some point in high school or college, that folder was lost and only a few of the ads remain.
This one is from Back to the Future Part II. Judging by the "Starts Today!" blurb it looks like I cut it out the day it opened on November 22, 1989.
Used a slightly longer focal length on this but you can see the amount of decay in this old stone farm house - no windows or doors, half the roof missing. Would have been a great home in its day.

Great usability meets poor usability.
The little click remote that comes with the 3G iPhone brings back one of my favorite devices / switches / remotes ever (I used to have a similar one button remote on a Walkman in 95).
But, it's attached to the awful old school ear buds that act more like they are designed not to stay in your ear. So good. So bad. Almost though.

Demonstrating Atmel AVR ISP programming using a Raspberry Pi. I included a FET and tri-state buffer to protect the Raspberry Pi's GPIO. The ATmega1284P is powered from 3.3V but the buffer should allow the Raspberry Pi to be safely connected to a microcontroller powered from 5V.

At Space Launch Complex 3 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a crane is used to lift NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, or InSight, Mars lander for mating atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. InSight will be the first mission to look deep beneath the Martian surface. It will study the planet's interior by measuring its heat output and listen for marsquakes. The spacecraft will use the seismic waves generated by marsquakes to develop a map of the planet’s deep interior. The resulting insight into Mars’ formation will provide a better understanding of how other rocky planets, including Earth, were created. InSight is scheduled for liftoff May 5, 2018.
