Do you realise that the symbol used to represent pi….you know, that horrible 3.141….thing you had to learn about at school in maths for calculating the circumference or area of a circle….., originated in North Wales?
The first calculation of pi was made by Archimedes of Syracuse (287–212 BC), one of the greatest mathematicians of the ancient world, but it was a much less famous man called William Jones who introduced that symbol ‘π’ which until then was just a Greek letter.
William Jones was born sometime around 1675 on the island Anglesey in the parish of Llanfihangel Tre’r Beirdd, about four miles west of the town which is now Benllech. He had a humble up-bringing and was raised on a small farmstead by his parents Siôn Siôr (John George Jones) and Elizabeth Rowland. However his talent for mathematics quickly became apparent when he attended a charity school at Llanfechell. It was to be his only formal education. His aptitude for the subject ensured that he would not follow in the family footsteps. A local squire and landlord of the distinguished Bulkeley family, heard of his skill and took him under their patronage. They arranged for him to work in a merchant’s counting house in London.
It was only the first of many journeys. Between 1695 and 1702 he served in the Royal Navy, sailing to the West Indies during which time he taught mathematics on board a man-of-war, en-route learning about navigation. He was present at the battle of Vigo in October 1702 when the English successfully captured the Spanish treasure fleet as it was returning to the port in north-west Spain under French escort. Ignoring the obvious riches of silver to be had, he went in search of other booty according to an 1807 memoir by Baron Teignmouth, ‘... literary treasures were the sole plunder that he coveted.’
On his return he published A New Compendium of the Whole Art of Navigation which he dedicated to a benefactor John Harris, a writer, scientist and Anglican priest who had taken him under his wing. Back in the capital, his voyages over, he became a mathematics teacher in coffee houses and as a private tutor to the son of the future Earl of Macclesfield. He also became tutor to Philip Yorke, later 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764), who became Lord Chancellor and provided an invaluable source of introductions for his tutor.
In those circles, Isaac Newton had already mentioned to the Admiralty the benefit of sending mathematicians to sea. So inevitably it was only a matter of time before Jones came to the attention of Newton after reading “Jones’s Synopsis”, in which the younger man explained Newton’s methods for calculus as well as other mathematical innovations. It was in this book that Jones first used the Greek symbol ‘π’ to denote the pi. More significantly he used it as a constant number - 3.141...
Before Jones, approximations such as 22/7 and 355/113 had also been used to express the ratio. Explaining its use, he wrote: ‘... the exact proportion between the diameter and the circumference can never be expressed in numbers...’. Hence, a symbol was required to represent an ideal that can be approached but never reached. For this Jones recognised that only a pure platonic symbol would suffice.
In 1708 Jones was able to acquire an extensive library and archive, which contained several of Newton’s letters and papers written in the 1670s. The following year he applied for the mastership of Christ’s Hospital Mathematical School, despite references from Newton and Edmund Halley (the astronomer who calculated the orbit of the comet, now named after him) but he was turned down. Jones went back into private teaching but thanks to the papers he had acquired he was able to help his old mentor Newton resolving a dispute with German mathematician Gottfried Leibniz, over which of the men first invented calculus.
In 1712 Jones joined the committee set up by the Royal Society to determine which of them invented calculus. He was now firmly in the mathematical establishment.
He married twice, firstly the widow of his counting-house employer, whose property he inherited on her death. He remarried in 1731, to Mary, the 22-year-old daughter (30 years his junior) of cabinet-maker George Nix, with whom he had three children.
And therein lies the story of ‘π’ and it’s origins in North Wales. My photo is actually of part of some derelict structure of the Penmaenmawr quarry, the quarry that has removed the top one third of this granite mountain. But I thought it looked like ‘π’ standing high above the North Wales Expressway.

I just come to end the reading of " Kafka on the shore " by Haruki Murakami. It's an explosion of sensations, feelings, soft or crude images... The music of the words, the beauty, the poetry or the surrealism of places and situations, the thickness and the immateriality of the characters... reading this book is a pure jubilation from the first to the last page. Don't hesitate : you will adore it.

Early on Sunday morning, the cold was biting, well below zero. Bradgate Park was already busy with visitors, and in places the ground had turned white, dressed in a true winter coat. Trusting the BBC weather forecast that promised a bright, sunny day, I set off towards the park.
Almost immediately, I encountered a young male Fallow Deer (buck – Dama dama). As soon as he noticed the crowd, he stopped and, almost knowingly, posed for a few seconds. What caught my attention straight away were his antlers. The left antler showed the typical broad, palmate shape of a Fallow Deer, while the right one looked strikingly different—more like the pointed tips of a young male Red Deer.
Most likely, this unusual shape resulted from a deformation or break during the growth phase of the antler. I found it fascinating; perhaps the experienced park rangers would have more insight into the history behind this individual’s antlers.
With winter clearly arriving, migrant birds have started to appear. After recent sightings of Stonechat, Goldcrests have now begun to show themselves. I am sharing two Goldcrest photographs from this walk. Unfortunately, I experienced a technical issue with my Z8, so I am confident that on my next visit I will be able to present sharper and more varied poses of this tiny bird.
As always, my photo walks would not be complete without the Robin (European Robin / Redbreast), which once again stepped onto the path in front of me, as if keeping me company.
I am sharing a total of seven photographs and hope you enjoy them.
Wishing you all a beautiful week ahead.
Goldcrest in the UK – Short English Note
Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) is both a resident and a winter visitor in the UK. While many individuals breed locally, significant numbers arrive from northern and eastern Europe during autumn and winter, boosting the UK population. These winter migrants are often seen in woodland edges, conifers, and parks, especially after cold spells on the continent.
I've captured some unforgettable moments with my camera, and I hope you feel the same joy viewing these images as I did while shooting them.

I use GND filters even though I shoot digital.. How about you? While I was photographing the area, a fellow photographer said with digital, GND filters aren't needed.. I still like the result of balancing the exposure in a single frame. Also, for longer exposures, I believe the filters help capture more color & allow to capture motion/movement. Personally, I don't think it's wrong to use GND filters. Less to worry about in post processing.

It's been a couple of years since I posted any photos from Vancouvers drug use mayhem.
1 of 2 from Chinatown.
There is an article by Vancouver Sun Reporter Peter mMcMartin about the situation posted in August 2025.
Every time I visit Chinatown and the downtown east side (daily) his article comes to mind so this is a way to share his viewpoint that I agree with.
In the 30+ years I have lived nearby, the situation has only deteriorated.
The law protects the rights of the most vulnerable among us to live in filth and despair
Pete McMartin: I'm tired of how homelessness and addiction take up so much oxygen in the social discourse.
Published Aug 03, 2025
In 2014, Vancouver Sun reporter Lori Culbert and I wrote a weeklong series of stories identifying the government social welfare programs — and their cost to taxpayers — in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Over 100 programs existed just for housing. Thirty provided health care, 30 offered family services and a miscellany of another 100 services — including a food bank for pets — brought the total to 260 social welfare agencies operating solely within the eight square blocks of the DTES.
Those 260 programs served just 6,500 clients.
Five years earlier, in 2009, Province reporter David Carrigg also did a survey of the programs available in the DTES, and he identified 174 social welfare agencies offering services to about 5,000 clients.
In other words, in the five years between Carrigg’s survey and Culbert’s and mine, not only had the number of people needing help grown but so had the number of agencies serving them.
And the cost to taxpayers?
Over $360 million annually.
Article content
That astounding figure — almost a million dollars a day — did little to satisfy the DTES’s voracious appetite for tax dollars. More to the point, it did nothing to eradicate the misery and living conditions of the people who lived there.
Rather than winning the war on poverty — and what a quaint phrase that seems now — governments engineered a truce, with the unstated understanding that if they couldn’t solve the problem or spend their way out of it, they could contain it. Those 260 social service bureaucracies weren’t solutions to an intractable problem; they were barricades. They ghettoized their impoverished clientele by concentrating the services on which they depended.
And let’s be honest: The public was complicit in this, and content for it to continue as long as the misery stayed confined within the borders of the DTES.
And yet here we are. The squalor spreads. It corrodes a once-vibrant downtown core. It infiltrates the suburbs. Daily acts of random violence and vandalism have become normalized, while a cornucopia of drugs — some decriminalized, some tolerated, many deadly — act as accelerants.
In 2016, a year after our survey, provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall declared a public health emergency under the Public Health Act due to the alarming rise in opioid-related overdose deaths. Since then, over 16,000 people have died from those opioids. That’s not progress. It’s a plague.
Nothing, absolutely nothing, has worked. Over the decades, the problem has been studied to death — admittedly, a poor choice of words — with consultants and academics and the legions of poverty industry advocates offering up solutions that ultimately fail. They fail because they’re predicated on two simple criteria:
1. Give us more money.
2. Give us more of everything — housing, hospital beds, food banks, drugs, injection sites, counselling or — and this is always implicit — empathy, with a side order of collective guilt.
I’ve seen this in my own newspaper.
In one recent opinion piece, the author laments that it has been the public’s and governments’ norm “to daily bypass our downtrodden, our homeless, our addicted or mentally ill on the street as though they are either invisible or merely equivalent to lampposts” — to which I have to reply: ‘Are you f—ng kidding me?’
The public and its governments have done exactly the opposite and, short of bathing their feet with Christ-like piety, have directed billions of tax dollars not only to ease the suffering of the homeless, the addicted and the mentally ill, but also to make them completely dependent upon those dollars.
Another Sun story — this one again by Culbert — examined the merits of involuntary care through the experiences of three addicts who underwent the process, and while two saw it as beneficial and helped them get clean, the third condemned it as “dehumanizing” and a cause of her PTSD. Though she no longer does drugs, she said that if she relapses she would prefer to take her chances with street drugs that could possibly kill her rather than be readmitted to hospital against her will.
Well, OK, I thought, ‘You’re an adult. Good for you for having the honesty to express that choice, however idiotic I may find it.’
But what I thought was missing in her testimonial was (a) any appreciation of the monumentally expensive efforts governments and the public had tried to make on her behalf, however ill-informed she may have believed those attempts to be, and (b) her failure to recognize the destructive effects that a relapse would have not just on her own health and family, but, more importantly, also on the collective health of the public, who would be asked to offer up yet more money, and deal yet again with her relapse — providing she survives it.
Finally, in The Sun, there was another column, this one by Sam Sullivan, who wrote that, after 52 years, it was time to end the DTES “experiment” and the restrictive housing policies that he believes led to the homelessness and violence bedevilling it.
Funny thing about that.
Between 1993 and 2005, Sullivan was a Vancouver city councillor, and for three years after that, he was mayor. Yet despite the fact that his 15-year tenure at city hall placed him in the midst of that DTES experiment, if not close to its helm, it is only now, 20 years later, that he publicly declares the experiment to be a failure, and — as far as I could tell from reading his opinion piece — without taking any responsibility for it.
I will refrain here, in my own column, from claiming to speak for the public or with any inkling of what popular sentiment might be.
But this is how I feel:
My patience is Exhausted.
I’m tired of the endless, self-regenerating calls for more studies and more funding when all I see is a colossal waste of money and effort leading to no improvement. I’m tired of how homelessness and addiction take up so much oxygen in the social discourse. I’m tired of civil rights that supersede my own, and treat the right to defecate in the streets with greater regard than my right to be offended by it.
Finally, I’m tired of a social welfare system that not only encourages dependency, but refuses, out of moral timidity, to also admit its complicity in it, and which shies away from asking hard questions about personal responsibility and the consideration of measures more draconian than safe injection sites — measures like a return to complete drug criminalization, a higher threshold of minimum sentences for trafficking, the establishment of rehabilitation centres or work camps exclusively in wilderness areas far from the temptations of cities, the discontinuation of any efforts that facilitate drug use, and yes, the robust expansion of an involuntary care system.
It’s also my opinion that none of these measures, given the current legal climate, will become reality, at least for the foreseeable future. Under our Constitution and the Criminal Code, the law, in its majestic equality, protects the rights of the most vulnerable among us to live in filth and despair, and, as so often happens, bring about their own deaths.
How enlightened we have become! What progress we have made! We’ve reached that point when now sleeping under bridges, begging in the streets and stealing one’s daily bread are no longer evidence of a system’s failure.
They are the system.

If one colour seems a bit boring, why not add more?
Normally, you'll have to let your first base colour dry, make a new stencil for the 2nd colour parts and redo the previous steps.
But since my 2nd and 3rd colour parts were so little, I chose to add them using the same sharp stick from the previous photo.
When your whole design is dry, you need to do a final step to set the paint into the fabric a little bit more. Therefor place a piece of cloth over the image and iron over it.
Repeat this a few times.
To me, it always looks like this doesn't make much of a difference, but this is the way I learned to do it by a tutorial I followed myself.
There! I hope this was a pretty clear tutorial, I'm sure there's some messy parts here and there, but if you still have questions feel free to ask!
Now get creative and share your lovely shirts! :)

Astronomers have used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to show that, multiple eruptions from a supermassive black hole over 50 million years have rearranged the cosmic landscape at the center of a group of galaxies.
Scientists discovered this history of black hole eruptions by studying NGC 5813, a group of galaxies about 105 million light years from Earth. These Chandra observations are the longest ever obtained of a galaxy group, lasting for just over a week. The Chandra data are shown in this new composite image where the X-rays from Chandra (purple) have been combined with visible light data (red, green and blue).
Galaxy groups are like their larger cousins, galaxy clusters, but instead of containing hundreds or even thousands of galaxies like clusters do, galaxy groups are typically comprised of 50 or fewer galaxies. Like galaxy clusters, groups of galaxies are enveloped by giant amounts of hot gas that emit X-rays.

"Dark house, by which once more I stand
Here in the long unlovely street,
Doors, where my heart was used to beat
So quickly, waiting for a hand"

I bet you're expecting a man full of sin, one who doesn't care for moral rights or laws. One who can walk the line of both worlds, and still not be scarred. If this is what you predicted, then you're dead wrong. I do walk both lines, but both lead to different trails.
It all started with her death. Imagine a perfect day, one that makes birds sing, and you can smell the dew in the air. Two people sit under a tree, as they usually did on a Sunday evening.
Her father always wanted her to go to church. She never went until I told her to. We went together, and after ever mass, we walked to that tree, and sat just listening to the world around us.
On that day, she said those words which I could never forget.
"I love you."
This is what kills me. These words were my undoing. Fear of what could happen if I took her under my wing. I said some stupid excuse, and went home. Then I decided that I could handle it. I could love her, and that I always would.
Well, you can probably guess what happened from there.
I ran back to the tree, like I was in some kind of movie, the guy chasing after the girl. But I was too late. She wasn't at the tree. I sat down on the ground, leaning on the tree. Then, I remember seeing smoke, coming from one of the streets.
It must have been a car accident I thought to myself. It had to be. But being that "good" man I thought I was, I ran down the hill again.
Once I got down to the street, I saw that it was a car crash. A stupid biker had crashed into a red Honda Civic.
This car accident meant nothing to anyone else around me. It was just a regular crash. But I remember seeing two bodies on the ground, painted with crimson liquid.
I felt something come out of my eye. Something I couldn't fell anymore. There she was, in the middle of the street, laying lifeless. The other victim was there also.
I used to be afraid of the sight of blood. But this was her. I ran into the street, nothing mattered anymore. Cars honking, rushing by me, while I was cradling her.
I yelled to see if anyone had called the police. I screamed it. I broke out into tears. Even though it felt like forever, waiting there, they finally arrived. The men that were supposed to help the citizens were finally here.
They couldn't help her though, no. She was "totaled" in car language.
They said there was a note in the car. They guessed she was writing it while she was driving.
I looked at the letter, and saw tears all over it. I unwrinkled the paper to see this:
John. I know you've been good to me, and I thank you for this. But, you seemed like you couldn't handle a marriage, and that's when I figured out I couldn't handle one either. I figured I couldn't handle anything. We were young, that's all. For lust, I believe. I'm not even sure I ever loved you. Did you ever lov.....
That's when it stopped. A pen mark went across the page from where it stopped. They said she was speeding. A death note.
The doctor said there was nothing he could do, but yet, I knew there was. I was a religious man. Prayer was my way of getting her back. It was the only way.
I prayed on and off for months. I never left the chapel, I slept there. I prayed for answers, but none returned.
One fateful day, I awoke to see a note. No a waver. The only words on the paper were,
Love is forever, but not without a soul.
Then, a place to sign was under it. I looked around, trying to find the person who gave the note. No one was around, and frankly, I was there for years. Time flew by, and I had no idea. The church had been destroyed, but the chapel remained. And the note. To sign the note, my fate was unknown. But love fueled me. It always had.
I signed.
Have you ever felt the feelings of butterflies in your stomach? Imagine it times twelve. Then the feeling of my eyes burning, like pepper spray, but instead of the spray, I got the seeds. I saw flames form around my eyes, and skin peel from my hands.
But then she appeared. She was alive, and she was confused. I approached her, pain still in my body. She saw me once, and fled. I screamed her name, and noticed my voice was changing. More, raspy.
My clothes burned away, and the feel of leather wrapped around me. A chain made of flames slung around my shoulder.
Time to come visit.
The voice dragged me down deep into the chapel.
It seems your prayers were answered.
The voice was like sandpaper rubbing against metal. I couldn't see at the moment, everything was dark. But then I saw red. All of it. The whole world was red. It had seemed like I fell, as I was on my face. I stood up, and saw the chain on my shoulder. It was heavy.
Come John.
The voice could be heard from a distance. I didn't want to go, but my feet were moving. I dragged the chain on the ground, up the hills, and down the hills. This was the Hell he made for me. I finally saw a figure, and it stood out. White and black, while everything else was red.
John... lets see... loved Geneviève Rosa... signed the contract. Yep, you're here. Welcome to Hell.
"What is this place?"
Hm. Duh, I just said Hell.
"This is a lot worse than expected."
So you expected to come down her?
"No... that's not what I... meant."
Well, you sold your soul to... me.
"That's what that note was?"
Yeah. Sorry, the big guy wasn't responding. I tried to help you.
"You can't help me. You're the... devil."
Oh come on. What are you? Human? Wait, never mind, you aren't that anymore.
"What did you do to me?"
A holy man turned Rider. I like irony John. Oh by the way...
He whistled, and I could hear a bike. I still remember hearing that sound. Tires scratching on the sands of Hell. It arrived, and I recognized it immediately. It was the same bike that had killed her.
"Ironic."
Quite. Get on.
"I'm not your faithful believer."
Well you are for Him.
"Let me guess... Ironic."
Look, just get on. You're my Rider now. My Ghost Rider. One who walks Earth, and Hell, making people pay for their sins, and bringing them down here for me. Simple.
I tried to reason with him, saying it was unfair. She had left me, even when I saved her. She took my soul, and threw me away. It not only hurt me, but fueled me with something worse than love.
Hatred. It's what will fuel you through your journeys.
I looked at him, and I remember him smiling.
"What is your bidding."
Perfect. There is a man who brings people back from the dead. I want him... I want Otto Octavious.
I hopped on the bike, and started the bike. Flames appeared from the bike, as I fueled the bike. My hatred could fuel all of Hell. But I had a job to do. I rode my bike up a ramp (ha it's still there) and went back onto Earth. As I said, I had a job to do.

Yes, that was pretty long, but I really wanted to get the emotion in there. Anyways, you guys wanted this, so hopefully you like it!
Taken using a Ricoh Mirai bridge camera from 1989 and Velvia 100 reversal film.
I have owned a Mirai since 1989, this one is my third, I sold one broke one and this is the one I use now. I have always liked the Mirai it suits my way of making photographs. Its lens is of good quality and renders 3D looking immages with depth and beautiful tonal reproduction. The bokeh is creamy and subtle. Contrast is good, well controlled and not used to mask a lack of sharpness.
I can work intuitively with the Mirai. It is automated with easy control ove anything in the photograph making process should I want to do this for any subject or lighting. For reversal film the centre weighted metering delivers accurate and consitent exposures and the evaluative metereing is set up just right for negative film.
The screen is clear and bright and easily uesable for critical focusing, this camera is easy to manually focus simply by using a button on the lens barrel and the zoom control. The viewfinder has red arrows and a green confirmation light to aid focusing. The screen is normally the best focusing aid, it is bright, matched to the lens and shows clearly what is in focus.

Oscar the Grouch has nothing on Buster!
This week Buster continues with our theme of where dogs shouldn't be - and landed himself in a garbage can.
Thanks to my parents for letting me use their garbage can (theirs is much prettier than mine)...they fed me and Buster - and then I put him in the garbage can for photos ;)
I was debating for my final selection between sweet - and crazy...I of course chose crazy! I can't help myself, but laugh when Buster makes these ridiculous faces, and although composition wise, it is not the best of the bunch, it again makes up for it in personality.
The main thing that really bugs me about this photo is the reflection in the garbage can of my sexy white sports socks (with gray toes), and my jeans. I tried using the spot remover in LR to heal or clone it out with no good results...grrrr. I know this could have been avoided with using a longer lens - but I didn't want to be too far away from Buster in the event he tried to hop out (as I didn't want him to hurt his legs). I was also thinking that it may be a 'neat effect' if I was also in the reflection on the can in some of the shots.
You never know when Buster the Grouch may be living in your garbage can, so open with caution.
As usual, my 'rejects' can be seen in my practice set - and let me tell you, convex surfaces are not flattering to ones reflection :(
