In September 2015, I was scouting out and photographing numerous sites around Lake Tahoe, California and many sites in the Eastern Sierras for a short 5 days.
One the night of September 17, I took the Bonsai Rock Milky Way shot with the moon just above the distant mountain peaks.
The next day we moved down into the Eastern Sierras where I had been planning to photograph the iconic bristlecone pine tree with the Milky Way. Little did I know on the way down how well the moon would come into play with my night sky photography work there.
I used a long established technique to get the moon rays in this shoot while I light painted the bristlecone pine tree with my special light.
In 2017, I will have two 5 day Milky Way photography workshop in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, one over the 3rd week in March and one over the 3rd week in April.
During each of the two workshops, I will conduct 3 4+ hour Milky Way Photoshop post processing session where I teach all the techniques I used to create this final photo but this time it will be more of what is called a "Deep Dive" PS post processing session and workshop participants will need a laptop with Photoshop CS 2017. Lightroom will work but lacks some functionality used in what I will teach.

My Milky Way night sky photography workshops
In 2017, I will be leading two 4 day photography workshops in Jackson Hole. During both workshops, I will take my group out for 3 nights of my Milky Way night sky workshop.
My 2017 4-5 day photography workshop schedule:
ANP, Canyonlands & Monument Valley - March 24-29
Icons of the Southwest w/Ryan Smith - April 23-28
Jackson Hole, Wyoming spring - June 21-25
Jackson Hole, Wyoming fall - September 19-23
The great part is that in 2017 I will return to Jackson Hole for the incredible wildflowers throughout the valley and the surrounding mountains.
Do you shoot the Milky Way but need a little help in getting the Milky Way to jump out of your photos ? If so, take a look at my ebook A Photographer's Milky Way Processing Guide - A Photoshop HowTo

Time to chill out to Adele's song ... Hello.
Thanks for stopping by.
The covered bridge was built in 1862 by a certain David I Wood, who used to charge teamsters to travel across the bridge. The bridge was built using wood from Mr. Woods's lumber mill in Sierra County, California. There is a plaque on the northern side of the bridge that commemorates this.
This bridge was built to replace an 1850 bridge that washed away in a storm. At 251 feet (229 feet after the end walls were removed) it is thought to be the longest single-span covered bridge in the United States. As with all such bridges, the cover serves mainly to keep the rain off the load-bearing structure, which would otherwise soon rot from the moisture. Some said covers also made the bridge look like a barn so horses wouldn't be frightened to cross, but this was not universally accepted by teamsters of the day.
This road in the late 1800s was part of the Virginia Turnpike, a link between Marysville and the Comstock Lode silver mines in Virginia City, Nevada. Wagon teams, horsemen, buggies and livestock were charged a toll to cross the bridge. The Turnpike ran 14 miles from Anthony House (submerged under Lake Wildwood) to North San Juan.
The main visitor center to the South Yuba River State Park lies just to the south of the bridge.
Using a rebuilt GP38 as its primary power (along with a GP30 that was parked somewhere else on this day), the Iowa River Railroad operates about 7 miles of former M&StL trackage in central Iowa. The railroad runs from an interchange with CN at Ackley down to the Pine Lake Corn Processors ethanol plant at Cleves, the only customer on the line.

I used to see lots more of these on my local patch but only see occasionally now. I got great views of this beauty as the cold weather bought them very close to the edge of the reed bed.
I have used the analogy when speaking to large groups about how the teen years can be like a leaf floating down a stream and how it's our job as adults to cause gentle ripples in the water to guide their way so that they don't get caught in side eddies, riptides or anything else that would slow down their progress as they journey down their "stream" of life. This capture reminded me of this analogy.
One of the cool things I love about Kauai is that there are so many little roads that you can follow for miles, never seeing another soul, and happen upon little grass knolls and gently rolling streams like this.
On day #5 of our little virtual vacation I hope that you are able to find places in your own life to sit calmly, listen to the gentle waters of your travels and reflect on the journey.
This is the part of the vacation that I hate... knowing that I only have two days left and I'm just starting to relax )-:
Tomorrow it's time for a little "tubular dude!!!" Don't guess... you'll be wrong (-:

Location: Diamond Beach Jökulsárlon, Iceland
Over the third week in July 2016, I visited Iceland for the first time and spent a crazy short 7 days there.
As many who know who have been there, it is a photographer's paradise and offers so much. I found it so crazy that their blue hour at that time of the year can last over an hour instead of the 20 minutes I have where I live in the States.
So one of the sites I had to visit was Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and of course right across the road from the lagoon Diamond Beach where all the different size chunks of ice was ashore after leaving the narrow passage from the lagoon.
So now, I am prepared to do 6 day Iceland photography workshop. I plan to return to Iceland this year but this time for at least 3 weeks. The time frame I'm looking at now is July 1 through July 22.

For Macro Mondays "Single Use". I really like mirrorless cameras except for the dust on the sensor. I find it's a problem with long exposures and/or small apertures.
Used a Nikon 55mm manual macro with Metabones Adapter on my Olympus M 1. A fun walk around day. Gives a nostalgic look to this image.

I used to wear this ring a lot in my working days because it was very comfortable. I'm not sure why I still have it really, but at least it's come in useful for this week's theme. The stone is Labradorite, so in different light or at a different angle it sometimes looks much more blue. It's next to a tiny hand-thrown raw porcelain ring dish, which is only about 1" across. The dried Hydrangea flowers, which I seem to rely on a lot at this time of year, are dyed. Your eyes are not deceiving you. :)
For this week's Macro Mondays group theme, Ring.

The site of today’s Victoria Park Markets was once the central refuse collection area for Auckland City. Disposal of refuse was a pungent city issue throughout the latter part of the 19th century. In the 1870s collection was contracted out and dumping occurred ‘out of the sight and smell of citizens’. In the 1890s however, citizens were required to dispose of their own rubbish and vacant allotments became convenient, informal tips. Fear of the bubonic plague in 1900 prompted the council to consider a municipal refuse destruction plant and in 1904 a tender of £16,840 was accepted from J Barre Johnston Ltd of Sydney for the construction of a Meldrum destructor, completed in 1905.
The complex of polychromatic brick construction included the council’s Works’ Depot, blacksmith’s and carpenter’s shops, stables and a 38m high chimney. Alfred Wrigg (City Engineer from 1899 to 1906) probably supervised construction. He was also responsible for supervising the Auckland electric trams and for paving Queen Street with asphalt.
The capacity of the destructor was increased during the 1920s and 1930s, but by 1960, as controlled dumping grew in popularity, it was disposing of a mere 10% of the city’s rubbish. The plant was closed in 1972 and it was subsequently converted into the Victoria Park Markets.
As Auckland grew, so did its requirement for electricity. The council was vested with the public supply of electricity by the Auckland City Electric Lighting Act 1900 and an Australian engineer, W T G Goodman, was employed to report on the feasibility of using the destructor to generate electricity in 1906. His proposals were accepted, although he criticised the council for failing to incorporate a generating plant in the original design, despite a series of earlier reports endorsing the potential of electricity.
The electrical contract was won by Turnbull & Jones for £11,808. The cost subsequently escalated with revisions in potential demand and the provision of additional boilers and new feeders. In 1908, electricity was provided to the first 12 customers. Within four months demand exceeded supply and coal was used to supplement the burning of rubbish. It was replaced in 1913 by the Kings Wharf coal fired power station, again built by the council.

No flash used, a handheld capture inside this historic Georgian monastery. Some wonderful voices of a female choir were heard while this impressive service was held.
Thank you all for your appreciation!
A few years ago, pre-Pano-Sabotage and any use of the iPhone as camera on my part, I got up at dawn one very cold, hard Winter morning to capture the heavy snowfall in the cemetery just down the street. It turned out to be a fantastically bright and clear morning, which meant it was dangerously cold.
Using my ( now ) old, Canon Rebel XS, I took a series of about 50 shots. As the sun rose some of the snow started to drop off the higher branches of the trees it had so beautifully covered. So I got the bulk of my shots in before this happened. It was a tough shoot and I had to go nurse a roaring hot cup of coffee after, but the images were worth the near-frostbite. I couldn't believe that my Canon didn't seize up.
Two SOOC images of window frost as a backdrop and framing device with 3 unmanipulated SOOC photographs all shot at the same time.

I used to swim here as a teenager.... These days, I prefer to sit in the shade and watch as the young ones have their fun in the water.
It's a very popular spot. There's a huge barbecue area, a foot bridge to cross to the other side for a walk, lots of ducks in the water, and it has also become a very popular spot for weddings.
Just near here is the Axeman's Hall of Fame, where our own champion axeman David Foster is heavily featured.

Not a conventional title, but I have to admit that this beauty is from last year and that is why I called it a used bird. A couple of these beauties have returned this year, but they were extremely skittish and I had little luck yesterday on the bayou. The winds were a bit higher as I made a rare visit to the bayou in the afternoon. In some places the trees blocked the wind and it was quite pleasant, but it caused issues in other areas. I’ll get to the photos from yesterday in due time. This Roseate Spoonbill was foraging in an area that we call the flats and was a bit more cooperative. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou and a bit of a change of pace from the usual characters that we usually see.

Used my last day in Lisbon to shoot directly in B&W—in this case, the Monochrome film simulation. Limestone streets and sidewalks, stylish locals dressed in white or B&W, made it a target-rich environment.

Using a Bill Devin glass body, with in this case, the little nose extending in front, thus the anteater name, chosen by Grierson's wife! (Echidna are the Spiny Anteater cousins of the platypus from Australia & NZ, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echidna ) The Echidna team of 3 created 3 racers so they could each go racing! Seems simple....and the cars were raced by family and friends, and sometimes by the three themselves.
Grierson, Larson and Staver all hailed from Hibbing, Minnesota, (home of Bob Dylan and Roger Maris) which meant the men enjoyed plenty of time for conversation in the winter months. One such conversation addressed the success that Jim Jeffords and Dr. Dick Thompson were having running 3,000-pound production-class Corvettes against the lighter D-toype Jaguars, Ferraris and Maseratis competing in the SCCA modified classes. What if, the men speculated, you could stuff Corvette mechanicals in a 2,000 pound sports racer?
Built in '57-'58 by the 3 Minnesota amateurs (with help from Duntov), Echidna became the most successful American racing special, and outright won the 1959 B-modified National championship. To win that championship the Echidna had beaten the best of Ferrari, Maserati and numerous specials driven by professionals.
Chevy based, on a shortened, narrowed '56 stock Chevy frame , with a small block 283 ci bored to 339 with Rochester injection, alloy heads from Duntov, independent front and Positraction with Wattlink rear. The body is very light weight by Bill Devin. Raced successfully till the seventies, its history is too long to list. A Scarab driven by Jeffords, a Lister Corvette by Windrige, a Maserati 300S by Lloyd Ruby are a few of its victims. All the cars beaten then and now by Echidna, sell for multi-million dollars, and were significant bucks even when new.
On the track, the Echidna faced stiff competition at events like Road America from the Lister-Jaguars, Ferrari 750 and 860 Monza, Mondial and Testa Rossa, Maserati 450S, Lister Corvette and Jaguar D-type. In two seasons, the Echidnas started 35 races and won 8 overall victories and 17 class wins......amazing!!
AS ALWAYS....COMMENTS & INVITATIONS with AWARD BANNERS will be respectfully DELETED!
