Celebrating community unity and promoting safe streets, Missouri City residents will partner with their police officers, firefighters and City officials on Tuesday, Oct. 5 to participate in the 27th annual National Night Out.

A new pre-event feature this year will be two kick-off gatherings, both on Saturday, Oct. 2. The goal is to encourage as many citizens as possible to get involved in the crime-prevention effort and to register their areas for block parties, said Police Community Liaison Dan Flagg. The first kickoff will be in the Target parking lot on Highway 6 at Murphy Road from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the second will be in the Texas Parkway shopping center next to Wells Fargo from 7 p.m. to dark. Free hamburgers and hot dogs will be served and residents who host block parties will receive free T-shirts.

"Crime prevention is a partnership between the City and its residents. National Night Out is a great way for residents to take the opportunity to meet their neighbors and to do their part to prevent crime in their neighborhoods," Flagg said. "Last year, the City registered more than 60 block parties for the annual event."

Members of the Fire & Rescue Service and the Police Department, including the Dive Rescue and SWAT Teams, will be at both kick-off events to greet participants and to hand out crime-prevention materials. A Fire & Rescue Service ladder truck and rescue boat will be on display, along with an All-Terrain Vehicle used by the Police Department. Target, which sponsors the event, will also have team members on-hand to meet with residents and to provide refreshments.

Groups are encouraged to register their National Night Out block parties at the kick-off events on Saturday, Oct. 2, or by calling 281-403-8705.

Why don't we just light a unity candle?

The Maryland Military Department came together to recognize the diverse backgrounds and cultures of its members through the seventh annual Unity Day celebration at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore, Md., April 26.

Unity Day is an opportunity to observe the different ethnic backgrounds that make up the Military Department and educate the members on what makes each culture unique. This year’s theme was ‘Recognizing Diversity and Religion – one nation, many voices.’

At Unity they put out these prayer request forms, and someone prayed for us. I was able to get a photo of that plus the prayer that was on the back of another form.

To cap off Unity Week with a strong finish, the United Minorities Council at Penn hosted Pulitzer Prize-winning and critically-acclaimed author Junot Diaz. His talk was the culmination of a week-long series of events that aimed to start discussion about the various political happenings of the world as well as to foster a sense of unity between all groups on campus.
