Yesterday I was invited to take some photos for the Norwegian Wildlife Hospital, which got this beautiful young golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) the day before.
It was found on Jæren, and needed to get treatment for its left eye.
Even though it's sad when birds and animals are injured, it is always special to get the chance to meet a raptor this close, and gratifying that there are vets who spend their spare time saving them.

Unique view of Sleeping Bear Dunes on a clear day, from the Tour at the top of Point Betsie Light! Lake Michigan.
C&NW inspired Metra F59 #90 highballs Lockport Depot on Metra's Southwest Service, formerly the GM&O Alton Route, with the 2022 AAPRCO Special. This was a dead head positioning move after the days festivities and excursions had completed.
The special excursion on this day road the rails of the CP C&M/Elgin and Fox Lake Subdivisions bringing out a unique character to the territory. C&NW Heritage F59 METX 90 with the Chicago inspired F40PH 104, leading 8 Privately-Owned passenger cars all over Chicagoland. The car owners were being shuffled all over town for the weekend and into the new week for Annual Convention Festivities.

Amongst all Scotland's mountain landscapes Assynt is the most unique. Its small, isolated peaks surrounded by uncountable lochs and lochans make it a haven for landscape photography and one of my favourite places.
This shot taken from the top of Stac Pollaidh, the areas most accessible peak, shows the full expanse of the area. From the left are Suilven, Canisp, Cul Mor, Cul Beag and Ben Mor Coigach (which is actually in Coigach, not Assynt). Stac Pollaidh is perhaps the most characterful of all the peaks with fascinating rock formations all over the summit. At around 550m it is also one of the smallest peaks in Assynt yet it enjoys some of the best views over the region.
As this fabulous sunrise developed I was drawn into shooting a massive panorama of the area (as I have often done in the past). In my hurry to capture the scene I ended up with a composition that feels a little unresolved, but I simply didn’t have time to come up with an alternative. Although the structure of the image is a little lacking it does at least succeed in describing the scene in all its glory.

A fisheye photo of the unique toilet pods at 'Sketch' in Conduit Street, London.
I took my wife here for afternoon tea back in April as a belated Valentine's present. The food and ambience were superb as you'd expect for a restaurant with two Michelin stars but it was the toilets I really wanted to photograph.......

From Wikipedia : "Sketch is a restaurant on 9 Conduit Street, Mayfair, London, England, which opened in 2003. The restaurant is owned by Mourad Mazouz and the Head Chef is Pierre Gagnaire. The cuisine is described as 'New French', and is a loose adaptation of the cuisine served in Gagnaire's three Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris and is executed by Hervé Deville and Johannes Nuding.
Mazouz came to public attention through the success of Momo, the North African restaurant and bar he opened in 1997 just off Regent Street, although he was already well known in France for his celebrated restaurants, Au Bascou and 404.
The restaurant covers two floors of a converted 18th century site in Conduit Street, Mayfair. Its dining area contains a permanent exhibit of David Shrigley artwork, and Shrigley designed the restaurant's tableware."

A unique piece of social and architectural history - the Galloway car was built here in the 1920's, the inspiration of Dorothée Pullinger who wanted to design a car for women, built largely by women. The design of the building was modernist with classical features such as moulded concrete cornice. There was a tennis court on the roof that is apparently still there. Two large "R"s are visible in the brick work of the top storey. If ever there was an iconic building that symbolised the achievement and struggle of women in industry this is one of them. The road network of Madagascar, comprising about 4,500 unique roads spanning 31,640 kilometers (19,660 mi), is designed primarily to facilitate transportation to and from Antananarivo, the Malagasy capital. Transportation on these roads, most of which are unpaved and two lanes wide, is often dangerous. Few Malagasy own private vehicles; long-distance travel is often accomplished in taxi brousses ('bush taxis') which may be shared by 20 or more people.
While most primary roads are in good condition, the World Food Programme has classified nearly two-thirds of the overall road network as being in poor condition. These conditions may make it dangerous to drive at moderate-to-high speeds and dahalo (bandit) attacks pose a threat at low speeds. Many roads are impassable during Madagascar's wet season; some bridges (often narrow, one-lane structures) are vulnerable to being swept away. Few rural Malagasy live near a road in good condition; poor road connectivity may pose challenges in health care, agriculture, and education.
Drivers in Madagascar travel on the right side of the road. On some roads, to deter attacks from dahalo, the government of Madagascar requires that drivers travel in convoys of at least ten vehicles. Car collision fatalities are not fully reported, but the rate is estimated to be among the highest in the world. Random police checkpoints, at which travelers are required to produce identity documents, are spread throughout the country. Crops are transported by ox cart locally and by truck inter-regionally. Human-powered vehicles, once the only means of road transport, are still found in the form of pousse-pousses (rickshaws). Taxi brousses constitute a rudimentary road-based public transportation system in Madagascar. Rides on taxi brousses cost as little as 200 Malagasy ariary (roughly US$0.10) as of 2005, and vehicles involved are often overpacked, sometimes with the assistant driver riding on the outside of the vehicle. Stops on their routes are generally not fixed, allowing passengers to exit at arbitrary points.

Unique place on Herengracht canal where the Reguliersgracht. canal is crossed by seven bridges.
The boat is about to go under the Reguliersgracht bridge coming up the the place where one can see the seven bridges lined up. In order to see the bridges of Reguliersgracht line up, you’d have to be on stilts (or in a boat).
The unique orography of the coast of Javea (Spain) means that the seabed is full of grottoes, caves and tunnels, offering the possibility of making backlighting.
On this occasion I wanted to highlight this Mediterranean white coral called "Eunicella verrucosa".

I think it such a special doll I wanted to have I need to document it all for you. One year hesitating to unbox her but yesterday was the day finally she came out!
Melissa and Tommy wanted a unique cake - something special.. with stripes (but not too stripey), and greens (but not too green!). After much thought, the final design came to life. The "Tie the Knot" theme was carried out in many aspects of the wedding decor - including the invitations, which were the main inspiration for the cake.
Fondant icing with fondant stripes in multi-greens and pink, ribbed fondant ribbon and knot, gumpaste striped roses and leaves.

The unique landscape of the Badlands owes its appearance to the one material that is in short supply in Death Valley: water. The Badlands now exist in what was once a prehistoric lake. Mud and silt from the surrounding mountains washed down into the lake when what is now the national park was once a wetter environment. The silts settled to the bottom and were compressed and weakly cemented into soft rock over time. The clay minerals in the mudstone are shaped like tiny plates. These plates act like roof shingles, preventing water from penetrating the surface. The combination of the almost impermeable mudstone and Death Valley’s scant rainfall makes plant growth and soil development nearly impossible. If one looks closely at the photos, on some of the hills a layer of black rock covers the yellowish underlying layers. This is the result of volcanic debris deposited in the lake bottom when the valley was rimmed by ancient volcanoes. This layer forms a protective cap on the soft underlying sediments.
As the climate shifted, the lake dried and a geological upheaval (known as the Pacific Plate crashing into the North American Plate) caused the landscape to tilt. This tilt is easily identified in the rock strata. At Death Valley rainfall is intense but sporadic. Very long periods of drought are punctuated with drenching downpours. With so little vegetation and no soil, when water reaches the ground, there is nothing to absorb the rainfall. During Death Valley’s rain showers, water hits the surface and immediately begins to rush down the steep slopes, sweeping along particles of loosened mud. The rate of erosion can be incredible! Tiny rills are quickly carved into the soft mudstone. The more water in the downpour, the more rills are needed to carry the water away. Rills cut deeper to form gullies. Badlands are the ultimate result-- nature’s way of efficiently moving lots of water quickly.

Zhaoxing Dong Village, located in Liping County, southeast of Guizhou Province, is one of the largest Dong Villages in Qiandongnan area in Guizhou. Walking into Zhaoxing Dong Village, one will feel as though the clock is being turned back. All the buildings in the village are wooden-stilt houses. This is a picturesque village noted for the beautiful natural sights and unique ethnic flavor. It is surrounded by verdant mountains with a crystal stream running through.
In the village, everything is simple and far removed from the influence of modern city life. Only the murmur of the little brooks, the happy songs of Dong People and the rhythmic beating of the rods for laundry will provide the occasional sounds of daily life. The verdant mountains, simple but elegant houses and the smiling faces of Dong People will greet you and complete this natural feast for your senses.
If someone wants to escape noisy city life and would like to experience a special rural life, the Dong village is the best choice, and people can choose to stay there for several days.

A unique element of St. Nicholas Russian Church (Biserica Rusă) is its Iconostasis seen here entirely sculpted from wood and covered with thin sheets of gold.
It was made in Moscow, according a model of the icon screen of the Holy Archangel’s Cathedral (Church of the Twelve Apostles) in the Moscow Kremlin.
The interior of the church was painted in 1948 partially in oil colors by the Russian painter Cudinov in a neo Byzantine style.

Russian Ambassador Mikhail Nikolaevich Givers initiated the building of a Russian Orthodox church in central Bucharest in 1905. It was meant mainly for the use of the Russian Embassy employees, as well as for Russians living in the capital city of the Kingdom of Romania. It was funded by the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II and designed by a V. A. Preobrazhensky.
During World War I, just before the start of the occupation of Bucharest by the Central Powers, it was closed, while all valuables and the archives were transported to Saint Petersburg, where they vanished during the Russian Revolution of 1917. After the war, physical damage was repaired by the Russian community in Bucharest, with services starting again in 1921. .
The old Russian priest died and in 1935 the church was transferred to the authority of the Romanian Government, which meant it for the use of the students and professors at the University of Bucharest.
In 1947, at the request of Soviet authorities, the church passed once again to the Patriarchate of Moscow, which named a new Russian priest and provided funds for its refurbishment.
In 1957 Patriarch Alexius I decided to transfer it again this time to the Romanian Orthodox Church, who had it restored once again. It was sanctified in 1967 and in 1992 it was once more designated for the use of students and professors at the University of Bucharest. To this day it is known as Biserica studenţilor ("The students' church").
Ancient cobblestone pathways in the Old Town lead the way to one of Geneva's unique sights, the Chapel of the Maccabees. This colorful Gothic influenced chapel is located in the south-west wing of the St. Pierre's Cathedral. It was built in the 15th century as a tomb for Jean de Brogny and his family, a cardinal who served under Pope Clement VII.
History of the chapel
Chapel of the Maccabees or the Notre-dame collegial chapel was converted into a warehouse during the Reformation to store salt and gunpowder, but by the end of the 17th century, it was used as the venue for lectures on philosophy by the Academy, a predecessor of Geneva University. This period saw a change in the layout of the chapel, as they built three other interior floors to accommodate the masses. Today, visitors can attend concerts that are held in this historic building and it is even used for weddings and family ceremonies.
Architecture
The chapel was renovated in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. The chancel vault was redecorated displaying the celestial chorus theme that reflected the original frescoes of its glorious past, a time before austerity was introduced by John Calvin as he preached Protestantism to the citizens of this city.
A perfect time to visit this chapel is during the sunny day, a spectacular sight as the sun's rays hit the stain glass and creates a magical atmosphere inside the chapel with different hues of color. The colorful arches and the high ceiling are remarkable. The ceiling is painted in shades of blue and pink and if you look closely you will see angels adorning the ceiling. The pulpit is stunning, it has sculptures of an angel, an eagle, a winged lion, and a winged horse, this represented the Medieval Royal Houses from the different ages that patronized this chapel. Another interesting sight is the historic Walcker organ, this was positioned on the cardinal's tomb after renovation in 1889. Though small in size, the Chapel Maccabees charms the visitor to spending more time admiring its beautiful interiors.

You might also be interested in visiting the archaeological site that is located below the cathedral. There are stunning artifacts from the 4th to the 11th century. The most outstanding is the 4th century mosaic floor and the baptistery, do watch out for the skeletons at this site!
The adventurous can climb to the top of 2 towers of St. Peter's Cathedral and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the city - definitely worth the climb.
