The Arbroath smokie is a type of smoked haddock – a speciality of the town of Arbroath in Angus, Scotland.
The Arbroath Smokie is said to have originated in the small fishing village of Auchmithie, three miles northeast of Arbroath. Local legend has it that a store caught fire one night, destroying barrels of haddock preserved in salt. The following morning, the people found some of the barrels had caught fire, cooking the haddock inside. Inspection revealed the haddock to be quite tasty. It is much more likely the villagers were of Scandinavian descent, as the 'Smokie making' process is similar to smoking methods which are still employed in areas of Scandinavia.
Towards the end of the 19th century, as Arbroath's fishing industry died, the Town Council offered the fisherfolk from Auchmithie land in an area of the town known as the fit o' the toon. It also offered them use of the modern harbour. Much of the Auchmithie population then relocated, bringing the Arbroath Smokie recipe with them. Today, some 15 local businesses produce Arbroath smokies, selling them in major supermarkets in the UK and online.
In 2004, the European Commission registered the designation "Arbroath smokies" as a Protected Geographical Indication under the EU's Protected Food Name Scheme, acknowledging its unique status.
Preparation
Arbroath smokies are prepared using traditional methods dating back to the late 1800s.
The fish are first salted overnight. They are then tied in pairs using hemp twine, and left overnight to dry. Once they have been salted, tied and dried, they are hung over a triangular length of wood to smoke. This "kiln stick" fits between the two tied smokies, one fish on either side. The sticks are then used to hang the dried fish in a special barrel containing a hardwood fire.
When the fish are hung over the fire, the top of the barrel is covered with a lid and sealed around the edges with wet jute sacks (the water prevents the jute sacks from catching fire). All of this serves to create a very hot, humid and smoky fire. The intense heat and thick smoke is essential if the fish are to be cooked, not burned, and to have the strong, smoky taste and smell people expect from Arbroath smokies. Sluishuis housing Amsterdam
At the place where urban, rural areas and water meet in Amsterdam IJburg, Sluishuis has been realised: the iconic housing project designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Barcode Architects. Sluishuis forms a welcoming entrance to Amsterdam IJburg. The volume is elevated on one side to allow the water into the courtyard and stepped down on the other side to make an inviting gesture towards IJburg with friendly green terraces. From every angle, you experience the Sluishuis volume differently. Whether you are standing on the dyke, motorway or bridge, walking across the jetties or public route over the roof, or even viewing the building from the air: Sluishuis knows how to surprise you from all sides. The residential programme consists of 442 apartments. Rental and owner-occupied homes alternate throughout the building and provide space for various target groups, income levels and age categories. All apartments are accessible via the central courtyard. There, the cantilever and the water welcome you to the building. Each home has optimal views and daylight thanks to the special shape of Sluishuis with its double-cut volume.
Sluishuis has a rich diversity of housing typologies, such as compact urban studios and water sports apartments. On the top two floors are duplex penthouses with both a relationship with the courtyard and a view over the IJmeer. Premium flats with luxurious and sunny wooden roof terraces with views over IJburg are located on the stepped part. Extra special are the apartments at the bottom of the cantilever, with stunning views over the IJ and directly on the water. What makes these apartments so unique is that they hang over the water and in the part of the floor that runs along with the sloping façade, there is a large window through which you can see the boats sail right underneath you. The plinth will accommodate a varied programme including a sailing school, water sports centre and restaurant with a spacious terrace in the sun. Residents and visitors enter through the courtyard. The walkway to the roof of Sluishuis offers visitors and residents a spectacular view of the water and the neighbourhood. There is also a jetty promenade with 34 houseboats around the building. The jetty landscape stimulates contact with the water with various mooring places, sitting decks, and floating gardens. The carefully designed landscape also stimulates flora and fauna with local plant species and a bird island. In this way, the plinth and the surrounding landscape form a high-quality addition to the environment.
In its materiality, the building seeks contrast but also a connection with its surroundings. In the material palette, natural materials have been chosen so that the building will have a rich and natural appearance over the years. The abstract, untreated aluminium of the façade reflects the water and gives the volume a different appearance at any time of day. In contrast, the stepped roof terraces and the jetty promenade are made of wood, which gives a tactile appearance. Sluishuis is one of the most sustainable buildings recently completed (2022). It has an energy performance coefficient (EPC) of -0.02. The building's heating requirements have been minimised by combining excellent insulation techniques, triple glazing and heat recovery from the ventilation systems and showers. The building is heated by a combination of energy-efficient district heating and heat pumps for hot water and cooling. The building's energy consumption for heating, heat pumps, ventilation and LED lighting is fully provided by approximately 2,200 m2 of solar panels. In addition to these technical aspects, a great deal of attention was paid to the greenery and water collection in the development of Sluishuis. At the front, sides and in the courtyard are gardens with local plant species. The greenery runs across the roof terraces upwards in built-in planters. On the roof, this creates a pleasant green atmosphere.

Air Force One lands at the Metropolitan Columbia Airport. This is my first time catching AF 1 anywhere, let alone in Columbia.
The Sun blasted out five coronal mass ejections (CMEs) over about two days (Feb. 26-28, 2013) and each one had quite a different shape and structure, seen here in a video bit.ly/Za8Aso. The most interesting one (seen above) blew out to the right with a bright, elongated center, likely part of a solar filament, that maintained its curly-Q shape as it expanded out of view. The images were taken by SOHO LASCO C2 coronagraph. The Sun is represented by the white circle and the red disk blocks out the Sun and part of the corona.

One of the more unique and historic landmarks on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles is Clifton's Cafeteria which was opened in 1935.
Owned and operated by Clifford Clinton and his wife Nelda and later on their children This locations interior was made to look like a northern California Mountain resort called Brookdale (which he named this location) where Clifford spent his summers as a youth, the Family also owned another cafeteria on Olive St. called the Pacific Seas and that restaurant was decked out like one giant tiki bar and both places had waterfalls inside....... The Pacific Seas closed in 1960 but the Brookdale restaurant has remained.
The last few decades has seen a drop off in customers but this summer the restaurant was sold to Andrew Meieran who owns The Edison bar and nightclub one of the truly amazing bars in downtown LA........... Meieran plans to make some cool changes to the old cafeteria with a new Tiki bar lounge upstairs and the cafeteria being open 24 hours a day, his goal is to restore this LA landmark back to it's 1930's heyday continuing the revitalization of the Los Angeles Broadway theater district blogdowntown.com/2010/09/5684-cliftons-to-stay-open-24-ho...
Galapagos sharks seen off the North Shore of Oahu.
Although it is legal to bait sharks to kill them. Misguided people are attempting to ban offshore shark encounters. These sharks are pelagic animals and do not hunt in shallow water or on reefs.
They are already dangerous predators. Few humans spend time in their open ocean habitat.
It always amazes me that people can legally slaughter marine life wholesale, but when businesses arise to allow people to see these animals alive and in their element opposition always arises.
I would suggest these people lobby to end longlining, shark fishing, and overfishing.
My concern is that these people are acting out of fear and ignorance. There is no research or evidence that suggests these encounters have been detrimental to sharks or humans. Keep in mind that this occurs over three miles offshore in open water. These sharks are already habituated to the area because of the bait used and discarded by crab fisherman for decades.
The operators are only taking advantage of an unusual situation where these types of sharks can be reliably encountered. The operations are extremely conservative and safety oriented. The cages are built to overkill specifications.
What I like about the operation (and hate as a photographer), is that it is totally geared to the average tourist. You don't need to be a diver. This makes this an unique opportunity for the average person to see pelagic sharks in the wild. This is a rare chance for some good public relations for animals that are much maligned and in severe need of protection.

A unique mast of 75 meters with 46 suspenders conforms the so-called "Pasarela del Voluntariado", a cable-stayed bridge in Zaragoza, Spain.
I spotted this unique window on a residence in Cripple Creek, Colorado. The home owner was tinkering in her garden, looked up, noticed me taking the shot. From the look on her face I think perhaps she thought I was taking a picture of her backside as she was bent over pulling weeds, as she is just to the left of the frame here.
My husband and I spent three nights in Cripple Creek, an old Colorado gold mining town. We stayed at Carr Manor, a hotel that was converted from a high school built in 1897 when the town was at its peak of population and wealth. We stayed in the Governor Carr suite which was luxurious and charming. The hosts were kind and accommodating. While Denver baked in near record high summer temperatures we enjoyed the open windows and the constant cool fresh breezes from the high altitude mountain air.
The unique formation of Vatnsdalshólar hills in Iceland offers a surreal, otherworldly landscape. These rolling mounds are a geological wonder surrounded by breathtaking views of distant mountains.

The hermitage church of San Pantaleon de Losa is assuredly the most unforgettable of this whole trip, not for its own architectural features but for the unique and truly memorable natural site chosen for the erection of this very small Romanesque church from the late 1100s.
Imagine an enormous outcrop of rock, a giant cliff rising above the surrounding plain like the prow of some alien ship, and perched atop this gigantic spear of stone, the hermitage church... Driving up the extremely steep and narrow (not to mention totally devoid of any guardrails!) track that leads to the parking lot, halfway up the jutting rock, will leave you some memories of fast heartbeats... and driving down the same will leave you even more! Then, the rest of the slope one must climb on foot (with photo backpack and tripod) is even steeper, but the reward is worth the difficulty of the ascent.
To conclude this day of uploads focusing on sculpture, this is a closeup view of the capitals on the left of the window shown in the previous photograph. In the usual exuberance of imagination so often deployed by Romanesque artists, we have a monster devouring the column beneath it, an amazingly realistic screaming face and finally, a floral, plant-like basket on the right.
This photo also allows you to get a better view at the collection of faces making up the inner archivolt over the window.

Globular clusters are relatively common in our sky, and generally look similar. However, this image, taken using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows a unique example of such a cluster — Palomar 2. Palomar 2 is part of a group of 15 globulars known as the Palomar clusters. These clusters, as the name suggests, were discovered in survey plates from the first Palomar Observatory Sky Survey in the 1950s, a project that involved some of the most well-known astronomers of the day, including Edwin Hubble. They were discovered quite late because they are so faint — each is either extremely remote, very heavily hidden behind blankets of dust, or has a very small number of remaining stars. This particular cluster is unique in more than one way. For one, it is the only globular cluster that we see in this part of the sky, the northern constellation of Auriga (The Charioteer). Globular clusters orbit the centre of a galaxy like the Milky Way in the same way that satellites circle around the Earth. This means that they normally lie closer in to the galactic centre than we do, and so we almost always see them in the same region of the sky. Palomar 2 is an exception to this, as it is around five times further away from the centre of the Milky Way than other clusters. It also lies in the opposite direction — further out than Earth — and so it is classed as an “outer halo” globular. It is also unusual due to its brightness. The cluster is veiled by a mask of dust, dampening the apparent brightness of the stars within it and making it appear as a very faint burst of stars. The stunning NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image above shows Palomar 2 in a way that could not be captured from smaller or ground-based telescopes — some amateur astronomers with large telescopes attempt to observe all of the obscure and well-hidden Palomar 15 as a challenge, to see how many they can pick out from the starry sky.

The BX is quite a common classic in the Netherlands.
19 TRI's on the other hand are a bit of a rarity among them. It's not a model version that was offered on a large scale anywhere in the world. Finding a lot of information about them is very difficult!
Some of what's known to me, is that it was supposed to be a fuel injected version of the TRS (carburettor) The 19 TRI was to my knowledge only offered as a phase 1 break, or phase 2 berline/break... And most often came as an automatic. Phase 3 came, in most countries like NL, with the 19 TZI and/or TZS. As replacement for the TRI and TRS, being the fastest and most luxurious models before the GTi range.
Yet, Belgium clearly had another market entirely. And got a Phase 3, 19 TRI that instead looked much more like a GTi.... And without it's catalytic converter spits out pretty much the same horses... (120 against 122 on 8V GTi's)
19 TRI's are one of the most hard-to-find BX's today.
But these two are today both pretty much equally unique, and almost certainly no longer have twins anywhere in the world...
Mine because it's an original Dutch licensed, cream white example with a brown int. and a manual gearbox instead of an auto.
And this Belgian blue example, because of it's color, the fact it's a phase 3 and because it originally came from the factory, looking like a GTi instead of a luxury model with windows in the C-pillars. Each country obviously got slightly different models... Often due to differences in emission regulations. But naturally I was still absolutely stunned to find out about this one's existence...

During the Christmas holidays De Dutch Don't Dance Division presented a unique version of the classic ballet The Nutcracker in the Grote Kerk (Big Church) in The Hague.
After the great succes of earlier versions in 2006 and 2007, De Dutch Don't Dance Division decided to turn this project into an annual tradition, in cooperation with the Holland Dance Festival. Many Hague-based groups, children and grown-ups, amateurs and professionals worked together in a positive way to create this 'community art project'.

De Notenkraker in de Grote Kerk. In 2006 was het voornemen er een Haagse traditie van te maken. In de afgelopen kerstvakantie bracht De Dutch Don't Dance Division dit sprookje voor de derde achtereenvolgende keer op de planken.
De Notenkraker is het klassieke ballet op de betoverende muziek van Tchaikovsky. Het originele verhaal over het meisje Clara en haar droomwereld die tot leven komt, krijgt in de versie van De Dutch Don't Dance Division een Haags tintje, waarbij Clara Amalia heet en de dochter is van graaf en gravin Van Wassenaer.
Daarnaast is deze voorstelling uniek voor ons land, omdat zij wordt gespeeld door zowel professioneel toptalent als amateurs, kinderen en dansvakstudenten. Een bijzonder samenwerkingproject dus, verankerd in de Haagse samenleving.
Voor deze gelegenheid was de Grote of St. Jacobskerk sfeervol en feestelijk aangekleed met kerstbomen en een gezellige bar. Een goede opmaat voor de voorstelling. Ik had niet verwacht, dat ik zó zou genieten van dit klassieke ballet, maar het was echt fantastisch: meeslepend, vrolijk én ontroerend!

NYCTA R41 locomotive 58 (GE 45-ton, 1967-1968) and R32 3699 (Budd, 1964-1965) sit on tracks 4 and 5 at 38th St Yard in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. These two pieces of equipment are both unique in their own ways: 58 is the only locomotive painted in this blue scheme (57 has a similar blue paint scheme, but not the same), and 3699 is the only single R32 car left on the property, as its mate was sold to a private owner.

Okay... now I can turn my attention back to the exterior of this store, haha! Yep, unfortunately you know that know that we've made it back outside, our stour will very soon be coming to a close :(
That said, even this store's *exterior* is unique and worth some discussion!
I've mentioned already in this album the facts that this store was one of the later-built ones in the chain, having opened at some time in the 1990s; and that the store appears to have operated without the Big Kmart logo ever on its storefront, despite the fact that that concept was at the height of its popularity back in this store's heyday. What I don't believe I've mentioned yet is that the building materials themselves are rather interesting. Particularly noteworthy, in my opinion, are the alternating cream- and tan-colored stripes on the columns supporting the façade overhang, a color scheme which is also repeated down the middle of the storefront on either side of the vestibule. And speaking of the vestibule, if you look close enough, you can also see that it is surrounded by a nice coat of orange paint, barely visible beneath that overhang: not a color you see that often in retail!
I'm not sure that this look screams to me “1990s” specifically, but it DOES scream “unique and unusual,” and that's what I like about it so much! As a matter of fact, this store ranks right up there near the Blytheville, AR, Kroger, which is another of my favorite retail exteriors. I wish I had gotten more exterior pics of both stores, honestly!

Migratory birds can be spotted in Sukhna Lake and in the adjoining 190-odd water bodies in the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary as these wetlands provide them the perfect environment for breeding.Nearly 3,000 migratory birds have already arrived and this number is expected to reach 15,000 by January.
“These birds come here from countries like Siberia, China, Afghanistan and the Himalayan region to escape the biting cold climate there. They are coming to this region for the last 25 years as conditions here are very hospitable for them,” Chandigarh.
Besides Sukhna Lake, these birds are also making their abode at water bodies in Botanical Garden and at Patiala-Ki-Rao Lake in Chandigarh. Pleasant weather conditions and a good number of reptiles and fish in the water bodies provide the ideal place for them.
Migratory birds start arriving here in early November and stay till March or April, depending on the climatic conditions. These include brahmi ducks, common pochards, red-crusted pochards, grebes, geese, shell ducks, marsh ducks, diving ducks, rails, coots, stilts, hill kingfisher, mallard, pintail, cormorants, Siberian ducks, cranes, storks and sandpipers.
Unique 1939 built 2-6-2 99 6001-4 waits at Magdesprung to pass the arriving Mallet 99 5906-5. The former was on the 09.12 from Eisfelder Talmuhle to Gernrode, while the Mallet was on the 10.55 from Gernrode to Harzgerode.
We share space on the mountainside with many critters, but this one is a bit unusual. It is a common mountain cottontail (Sylvilagus nuttallii), but a friend told me it is most likely leucistic. A practical definition of leucistic is "not quite albino." He has a little color, but is very light compared to the norm which is much darker.
