(The photograph was taken in Trondheim, but the townscape on the car shows Røros, an old mining town on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites. Røros lies a couple of hours' drive south-east of Trondheim, and its economic survival depends partially on selling organic dairy products made locally for the national market; the townscape image covering the side of the car is part of an advertisement for these products.)

Day Nine .. In Beaumaris for a quick look around before going onto Hirael where we are staying the night.
Beaumaris in Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales, was built as part of Edward I's campaign to conquer north Wales after 1282. Plans were probably first made to construct the castle in 1284, but this was delayed due to lack of funds and work only began in 1295 following the Madog ap Llywelyn uprising. A substantial workforce was employed in the initial years under the direction of James of St George. Edward's invasion of Scotland soon diverted funding from the project, however, and work stopped, only recommencing after an invasion scare in 1306. When work finally ceased around 1330 a total of £15,000 had been spent, a huge sum for the period, but the castle remained incomplete.
The castle design formed an inner and an outer ward, surrounded in turn by a moat, now partially filled. The main entrance to the castle was the Gate next the Sea, next to the castle's tidal dock that allowed it to be supplied directly by sea. The dock was protected by a wall later named the Gunners Walk and a firing platform that may have housed a trebuchet siege engine during the medieval period. The Gate next the Sea led into an outer barbican, protected by a drawbridge, arrow slits and murder-holes, leading on into the outer ward.
UNESCO considers Beaumaris to be one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe", and it is classed as a World Heritage site.

Undredal
Norway
Aurlandsfjord
Lovely Undredal lies wedged in between high mountains in a fertile valley on the shores of Aurlandsfjord. The village has a population of 130 people and 500 goats. Undredal is known for its goat cheese, which is still made in the traditional way.
Till 1988 Undredal was only accessible by boat, but since then a road connection has been made by constructing two lengthy tunnels.
This two storey building in the Preah Khan temple complex, believed to have been used as a granary or for storage, is perhaps the only building in Angkor with round columns.
Opened in 752. The Tōdai-ji’s main hall is said to be the world’s largest wooden building, even though after fire in 1692, it was reconstructed at only 2/3 the original temple’s size. The main hall houses the world’s largest bronze statue of Buddha (Daibutsu). Deer fill the surrounding Nara Park.

This is probably one of my favorite photos at Petra, the shot moment, where you come into view the beautiful Al-Khazneh at Petra, Jordan.
These are some of the amazing rock carvings in Petra possibly built by the Nabateans and a prosperous trade hub. You can only imagine now the life of these people during the ancient periods, and what and how they would have been like. Excavations are still ongoing; the true size of this site is still unknown, and more discoveries are still being made.

Bagan is located on a broad plain along the Irrawaddy River some 500 km (311 mi.) north-northwest of Yangon, in the Mandalay Region, Myanmar. It became the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, which grew to encompass nearly all of present day Myanmar from the 9th to the 13th centuries. During that period some 1,000 stupas, 10,000 small temples, and 3,000 monasteries were built on the Plain of Bagan. Mongol invasions caused the kingdom to collapse in 1287. Subject to more than 400 earthquakes since 1904, much of Bagan's architecture has been lost.
In 2019, Bagan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering an area of 50 sq. km (12,369 acres), UNESCO notes that the site includes "3,595 surviving monuments" including the Ananda Temple seen here. It was built in 1105 by King Kyansittha (ruled 1084-1112/13). The temple was damaged by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake which struck on 08 July 1975, and has been fully restored.

This cliff dwelling can be readily viewed from the road above. It was constructed beneath a sandstone overhang against a narrow, south-facing cliff face along the eastern edge of Navajo Canyon. The tower here is the tallest structure in the park.
As with the Park's other cliff dwellings, this one was lived in for fewer than 100 years and abandoned as of approximately 1300 A.D.

Italy's magical city of stone have been inhabited for around 10,000 years. It is one of the oldest settlements in Italy and probably one of the oldest in the world. Archaeologists have found artifacts in the city’s caves dating back to pre-Neolithic times.
Over the centuries Matera flourished. It was an important stop on the transumanza (where herders pass through with their sheep) and played a vital part in the wool trade, but in the 20th century with the invention of artificial fabrics and cheaper wool sources it began its steep decline.
What had been a city with a continuously inhabited, unbroken line from pre-history to modernity that was unique in the whole of Europe became a ‘national disgrace’, with inhabitants living in rudimentary conditions with no running water or electricity and sleeping alongside their animals.
In 1993 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the organization’s reason being that it is ‘the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte (cave-dwelling) settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem.’
It was the ultimate revenge on the city’s detractors when the ‘national disgrace’ became the European Capital of Culture in 2019, proving what its inhabitants had always known: that Matera is a national treasure.

The view from our hotel room was laced with church domes and spires. This one (La Compania Templo del Espiritu Santo) is one of the 70 Centro churches I did enter.
It is best known as Temple of the Company having been founded by Jesuit priests belonging to the Cmpañia of Jesus.
The Jesuits began construction in 1583 finishing it in 1600.
