Ukuleles, friends, roadtrips, and Minneapolis all on a whim!

I made a couple of these for small instruments, perfect for a ukulele.

A Harmony uke was my first stringed instrument in about 1960. These are vintage Martin ukes. Solid mahogany, they are, and you can see they are Martin's by the characteristic bridge. Slot through saddle too..interesting

Here are some pictures of my handmade cigar box uke ... which is incomplete. It still needs a bridge. I really like the way it looks now though! The inlayed star (my first time trying inlay... in case you couldn´t tell) is a river clam found in Redwood Falls, and so is the S in the soundhole. The wood of the neck was trashpicked, and the wood of the fingerboard is from a broken beach chair handle. The tuners are classical guitar tuners cut and carved to match. I can´t wait to get a sound out of this thing!

Had a strange desire to paint a ukulele?! So I bought a kit, glued it together and voila! Few intonation problems, as I figured there would be, so I'll start filing bits off, I suspect it will never be playable ah well, I enjoyed the little project.

Tenor Ukelele. Paduk back and sides for the fantastic red color. Cedar top, rosewood headstock, bridge and fingerboard.

Kodokan Goshin Jutsu. Tori Sonny Forsberg, Uke Harri Rutanen (SWE).

Hartland Quay, Devon. Found this place by chance, just looking for a bit of coast to explore; turned out to be one of my favourite spots. Everywhere you look there are wildly warped cliff strata and tide-weathered rock outcrops like this.

This is the first Tenor Ukulele that I actually made with my own hands at ukulele making class. For those of you who are interested: This uke is made out of Koa (top, bottom and sides) with a Mahogony/Rose Apple laminated neck; Ipe fretboard; Mahogany bridge; Mango laminate headstock (handmade); Spruce binding; and Mother-of-Pearl inlay around the sound hole. Whew! I have a whole new appreciation for the people who make these and guitars for a living.

I've been playing around with it off an on today and love it! Granted, it's not the best uke. It has it's issues since it's a cheap uke, but it does the trick for me just fine until I upgrade it.

I'm working on basic chords and my strumming. I want to practice at least once a day.

In the right hands, a ukulele is a very capable instrument. Here is Folk Uke, with Arlo Guthrie and Wilie Nelson as sidemen in this performance.

This is the right side of a stereo snapshot, probably on Kodkachrome. Hand-written inscription on the slide holder: "Bill #3 California 1953." I think it is Bill III, 'cause another slide in the set identifies an adult as Bill Jr.

WOW. Fun fun fun time at the green parrot. Must have been 10 Ukuleles on stage. Everyone had a great time. Love me do and folsom prison were my favorite uke tunes. See you next time round green parrot.

Neck is made from a chunk of cherry left over from my kitchen. I don't smoke cigars but I bought a bunch of boxes on eBay.
