The last of my Vireo images. This White-eyed Vireo wears yellow spectacles surrounding its white eye. It has yellow-washed sides, a gray head, a white chest and throat, and 2 white wingbars. Young birds have a dark eye that turns white in their first winter or spring.

Ovenbirds are olive-green above and spotted below, with bold black-and-orange crown stripes. A white eye-ring gives it a somewhat surprised expression. Like several other terrestrial, or near-terrestrial, warblers, Ovenbirds have pink legs.

Many male warblers are black and yellow, but Magnolia Warblers take it up a notch, sporting a bold black necklace complete with long tassels, a black mask, and a standout white wing patch. They often forages low in the understory, picking insects from the undersides of leaves

My nemesis woodpecker. We heard two juveniles calling back and forth to one another-finally caught up to them . Hard to miss their huge size and very loud vocalizations.

This is one of my top favorite songbirds including warblers. I absolutely love the colors on the male. I recently realized that I did not have a good portrait shot of this species, and decided to go and get one. Please view large for fine feather detail.

Thanks for stopping by~

I was surprised to find this GHO hunting during mid morning, but I assume he had a family to feed. He perched for a few seconds before taking off-just long enough to get a few images.

Ovenbirds spend much of their time foraging on the ground, often walking with a herky-jerky, wandering stroll that is unlike most terrestrial songbirds. Territorial males are very vocal and often sing from tree branches, occasionally quite high up. This is one of the few songbirds that habitually sings in the heat of midafternoon.

White-eyed Vireos forage deliberately with short hops or flights, pausing to look for insects by tilting its head and peering. It tends to stay hidden in the understory, where it gleans insects by picking, hovering, reaching, lunging, hanging, or leaping.

Large expanses of deciduous forest, particularly deciduous trees with large leaves (such as maples), typify Red-eyed Vireo habitat during the breeding season. On migration, look for them in nearly any type of forest, woodland, or woodlot (particularly in deciduous stands). It is often the commonest of vireo migrants.

Great Horned Owls are nocturnal. You may see them at dusk sitting on fence posts or tree limbs at the edges of open areas, or flying across roads or fields with stiff, deep beats of their rounded wings. Their call is a deep, stuttering series of four to five hoots.

Eastern Towhees spend most of their time on the ground, scratching at leaves using both feet at the same time, in a kind of backwards hop. They spend lots of time concealed beneath thick underbrush. You may see this bird more often when it climbs into shrubs and low trees to sing.

This noisy guy was very difficult to capture an image of - extremely skittish. He would not let us get closer than ~150 ft. before taking off again. Im sure having 2 dogs did not help.

Not very impressed w/the focusing speed or accuracy of the Nikon 55-300mm glass - although conditions were not ideal. Had to go to MF and stop down to achieve focus. The image was taken from a shadowy ravine with snow and hazy sun as a backdrop.

We camped at Tyler State Park this past weekend. I took this picture of the lake under a crescent moon and Venus just before they set below the trees. The darker side of the moon, illuminated by Earthshine was clearly visible.

Earlier while we were out canoeing on the lake, we spotted a bat flying around in broad daylight. It was swooping down to scoop up insects off the lake. I did not bring my camera out on the canoe so unfortunately no pictures of it! But happy to have had the chance to see it in action.
