Today the Xandressan Captain and her motley crew are helping to demonstrate how easy it is to get pretty good pictures of your miniatures (in this case Mage Knight miniatures) using a smartphone.

You'll need:

- A smartphone with a camera of course

- Some dust free miniatures

- An A3 or equivalent piece of white paper or card (I've used the back of some packing card here, the plain back of gift wrapping is also good. It needs to be crease free)

- Some tape to hold it in place

- A windowsill and lots of daylight. (It's raining here today but there's still enough light)

- Some free and half decent image editing software which can crop and white balance as a minimum.

Setup as in the top left picture, leave enough room at the sides and back so you can crop the image afterwards.

Snap away without the flash (middle left picture is an example) and then crop (bottom left) and edit the ones you're happy with.

Win! It's that simple.

Of course a reflector, better camera, bounce flash, better imaging software etc etc will all allow for better results, but this basic tutorial assumes you have access to none of those.

Please download this photo to follow along in the OOB tutorial.

Coloring #2:

this one is pretty simple. you can do it in like 30 seconds or less.

open the picture you want and sharpen your picture twice.

- filter > sharpen > sharpen -

now go to CHANNEL which should be located next to your LAYERS.

www.upload3r.com/serve/220610/1277215831.jpg

Now, click on GREEN. The picture should turn gray.

Then, click on SELECT and select ALL. There should be a border around your picture.

Right after that, click on EDIT then COPY.

Now, go back to your CHANNEL and click on BLUE.

The picture should turn lighter but its still gray.

Click EDIT then PASTE. The picture should still be gray.

Now, on CHANNELS click on RGB.

Then go on SELECT and click on DESELECT.

and that's it!! :D

Just remember, these are the results on THIS picture.

The coloring can be different in another picture.

This week is a milestone for my photo editing; from only using Photoshop to change colours, to create a ‘fantasy’ photo, I’m well pleased with my progress!

Both Saturday and Sunday I’ve been searching online and looking through photo editing tutorials. It was really not easy when you have to figure out everything by yourself.

I had a composition idea in mind, the first step is to take a self-portrait. I put the stool on my bed and was trying to sit on the stool to create this ‘floating in the air’ look. It turned out to be a rather silly idea as it is extremely difficult and dangerous to sit on the stool when it’s placed on a soft mattress. I only took 5 photos then I thought I’d better stop before I break my ankle.

The difficult part is to extract myself from the background. I spent a whole day studying this on the Internet and trying out different ways. Apparently if you have Photoshop CS5, it would be much quicker and easier, here I used the most painful and the slowest way – lasso tool from CS3.

The rest is merge two images together, it's much easier, so much fun and fascinating. I’m pleased that I spent time to go through the boring bit of the tutorials, now I can create my very own fantasy pictures!

So week 4, is the Starry Starry Night, background photo by Artist Jeff Michelmann, his work can be found at gucken.deviantart.com/, self-portrait and post process by me.
