If I could turn back time, I'd like to meet these people--my paternal great-grandparents Andrew Neil and Fanny Holmes Neil, circa late very early 1900s. I love the posture of these two---there is a closeness and comfortableness in the way that they are posing together.
Andrew was an 1858 immigrant from Sorbie, Wigtownshire, Scotland and Fanny came to the US from Ireland, most likely Tyrone County, in 1863,
My mother recently found this photo in a box of my grandmother's with no identification on it. The hat the farmer is wearing and the woman's bonnet, along with the farm implements and horses seem to indicate the 1890s to early 1900s.
It is very difficult to identify the people for certain because their faces--in particular, his--are obscured; but, I know other family members can be ruled out. The woman in the photograph resembles a photo of Fanny when she was much older, which can be found in my photostream.
I am confident that this isn't a photograph of my other set of grandparents; so, I am basing my identification of this man as Andrew based on my firm belief that the woman is Fanny.
Apologies for the poor quality of this snap, the sun was unco-operative and my wife was a tadge slow washing the screen. (Apparently my fault for not topping up the bottle)

Tool steel is being turned on the lathe to make a precision circular cutter. This cutter will be hardened and used only once to help make the gear tooth form cutter.
Turning torso, it has 54 (?) floors. In Malmö, Sweden. It looks like it is turning around. Makes you dizzy. 8/2005

i think this single star is the only winter-crafting i did this year. no hand-drawn turkeys, no christmas ornaments, no handmade valentines, no paper snowflakes, no nothing. this is it.

HSB Turning Torso is the tallest skyscraper in Sweden and the Nordic countries, situated in Malmö, Sweden. It was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and officially opened on 27 August 2005. The tower reaches a height of 190 metres (623 feet) with 54 stories.

Historic turning stones in Geraldine used to guide horse drawn wagons along narrow lanes in the mid to late 1800s.
The horses turned into the lane and then the attached wagon would be brought into alignment by the off-side wheel hub catching on the stone and pivoting it into a straight line.
Most of the stones were removed as motorized vehicles took over from horses.

Based at the Oldham Mumps depot, it is operating Bee Network Service 409 10:06 Rochdale Interchange - Thornham Summit - Royton, High Barn Street - Oldham Bus Station - Hathershaw, Pelham Street - Ashton-under-Lyne Interchange. Prior to Bee Network Tranche 2, which began on 24/03/2024, this service was operated by First Manchester, out of their then Oldham Mumps depot which was transferred along with the Go North West Queens Road, Manchester depot to Stagecoach Manchester control on behalf of TfGM Bee Network. © Peter Steel 2025.
We find that Craft & Design pupils often have difficulty remembering the sequence of operations involved when making a simple screwdriver handle. These photographs depict this process.
We begin with the preparation of the 25mm aluminium blank. After this the blank is held in the 3 jaw self centering chuck. A series of turning operations is then carried out. For the following we set a high spindle speed and used a slow feed speed for best results. Shown here we show facing off. Then turning down or parallel turning. Next taper turning. After that the Slocombe bit or centre bit is mounted in a Jacob's chuck and a pilot hole is drilled. A HSS twist drill or jobber bit is then mounted in the Jacob's chuck and a blind hole is drilled to a depth of 30mm. The depth gauge is used to judge this.
Taps and dies are used to cut the internal thread on the screwdriver blade and the internal thread on the handle.
Finally both components are assembled and the handle is knurled or given a textured grip pattern. This is done at a very low spindle speed and a slow automatic feed speed.

The exceptional warm weather continued on this day with a nice official temperature of 13°C.
Ann turns around and shows her back. Her colorful fingernails are on the wall, her head and shoulders are covered by her long black hair and her sweet bum is highlighted by her bright yellow shiny shorts. She's such a tease sometimes and I don't mind at all; I'm loving it!

The Vivarais Railway closed indefinitely on Sunday 13th April 2008. A great loss to railway preservation. It was such an interesting and unusual line, in an excellent location.
From its rescue after the closure of the system in 1968 until 2003 the line had been run by the CFTM, an enthusiast society. It was then handed over to a company in which the Conseil General de l’Ardèche, the regional government, has a majority stake on the basis that it would provide much needed funds to renew the permanent way and to upgrade the railway’s infrastructure.
By 2008, the funding situation had become so desperate that the Conseil General convened an emergency on 10th April at which it decided to suspend services indefinitely, ostensibly on safety grounds. The last train ran the following Sunday 13th April 2008.
There is now a need for major investment. Furthermore, SNCF has given notice to terminate from 2012 the railway’s use of the 2.5kms of mixed-gauge track, the “tronc commun”, at the Tournon end of the line.
Replacement facilities would be needed for which land has been acquired but no construction work has yet started. In 2008 the Conseil General estimated that between 8 million and 10 million euros are required to put the permanent way back into first class condition, to refurbish the steam locos and to build the new station and depot. There is currently no commitment to provide any of this money.
The tourist industry in the region is heavily dependant on the railway which often ran trains as long as 10 coaches during the summer. The local press described the closure as a catastrophe.
