A visit to the National Trust run estate of Stourhead in Wiltshire.
Stourhead is a 1,072-hectare (2,650-acre) estate at the source of the River Stour in the southwest of the English county of Wiltshire, extending into Somerset. The estate is about 4 km (2+1⁄2 mi) northwest of the town of Mere and includes a Grade I listed 18th-century Neo-Palladian mansion, the village of Stourton, one of the most famous gardens in the English landscape garden style, farmland, and woodland. Stourhead has been part-owned by the National Trust since 1946.

The Palladian Bridge over the end of the lake. It looked like you couldn't go over it as it was fenced off. But we left the lake near here via the village exit.

Bridge carrying turfed track over west arm of Garden Lake. 1762
for Henry Hoare, the design from Leoni's The Architecture of
Palladio, Book III, published in 1721. Limestone. Five segmental
arches with rusticated voussoirs and dropped keystones, cutwaters
on both sides, plat band to plain parapet with pitched coping,
square end piers. Important element in the view of the lake from
Stourton High Street.

Dudmaston Hall in Shropshire is a late 17th-century country mansion the centre of the Dudmaston estate and has been in the Wolryche family or the Wolryche-Whitmore family since 1403. The house and estate is extensive and includes the hall, gardens, parkland, managed woodlands, lakeside, farmland and the estate cottages at Quatt, a model village for the workers and tenants of the estate. It is likely that there was a medieval house which was replaced by a fortified manor house on the site of the present building in the 16th century. That was in turn replaced by the present Hall. The Wolryches played an important part in local and national affairs . The family accepted the Reformation and became stalwart Anglicans, but were royalists,. Sir Thomas Wolryche raised troops for the king and was appointed governor of Bridgnorth Castle. When Parliamentary forces arrived at Bridgnorth in 1646, Wolryche's garrison set fire to the town, which was largely destroyed, before retreating into the castle, only to surrender shortly afterwards. The house is known for the art collections.

Stablemen, commonly known as Rough Riders, in the yard, ride the lay down horses. Historically the tactic of laying down ones horse emerged when scouts could move fast into enemy territory and then "disappear" in the long grass when they laid their horses down.
They would also use their horses as a firing post, in an emergency, as they would offer some cover from fire. Their old skills are an integral part of the routine today
