Bristol Gorillas are life-sized fiberglass gorilla sculptures on display on some of the many Bristol city landmarks for ten weeks between the 6th of July and the 7th September 2011. There are 61 life-sized gorillas in total which are on display around the city and 90 mini ones (70cm tall) on display in more secure locations such as shops, libraries, cafes and schools.
The project, called Wow!Gorillas, was initiated by Bristol Zoo Gardens, in partnership with Wild in Art. It all started about a year ago when Bristol Zoo Gardens and its partner launched an initiative looking for artists (such as illustrators, painters, photographers and graffiti artist) to help design and decorate the life-sized sculptures. The project’s main aim is to raise awareness of the extinction crisis facing primates in the wild in occasion of Bristol Zoo’s 175th birthday.
350 designs were showcased and 60 of them have been sponsored by different organisations to become life size gorillas. Mini gorilla sculptures were acquired by schools for the children to design and decorate.
In September, when the exhibition ends, the life-sized sculptures will be auctioned to raise money to support the work of two important organisations in Bristol: Bristol Zoo Gardens which drives the conservation project for gorillas and other apes in Cameroon, and Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal which raises funds for the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
The mini gorillas will not be auctioned at the end of the exhibition, instead they will be returned to their respective schools.

bobble recently celebrated the upcoming holidays with The Tomorrow Trust, a South African organization that supports at risk youth with their individual learning and psychosocial needs.
A sign of trust. My dog Zima, a mixed breed who will celebrate her 11th birthday in June is tight up against my leg in the veteran’s waiting room. As long as I am there she knows she is safe and no one will harm her. Her ‘Wellness Check” was great; since she has lost the eleven pound she had gained eating table food too often. Now her diet is 95% dry dog food suggested by her vet. 1/24/2011
A warm Sunday afternoon visit to Calke Abbey in Derbyshire. An estate run by the National Trust since 1985.
Calke Abbey is a Grade I listed country house near Ticknall, Derbyshire, England, in the care of the charitable National Trust.
The site was an Augustinian priory from the 12th century until its dissolution by Henry VIII. The present building, named Calke Abbey in 1808, was never actually an abbey, but is a Baroque mansion built between 1701 and 1704.
The house was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until it was passed to the Trust in 1985 in lieu of death duties. Today, the house is open to the public and many of its rooms are deliberately displayed in the state of decline in which the house was handed to the Trust.
The visit to Calke Abbey, a lot of rooms to see, felt like it went on forever!
