It was just a branch of sorts either growing out of the trunk or growing into the trunk.
I just thought it was a weird image.
The final in my three-part series of old tree trunks in Japan. Love the intricacy of the tangled branches and the knotted wood.

I thought I'd try a vertical pano - 3 shots joined by Autostitch. Tree trunk on Bredon Hill, Worcestershire.
Roscoe smith preserved some white chestnut trunks in the 40's to construct a hall using them as pillars. WWII put the kybosh on those plans. The trunks are now used in the farm equipment exhibit.
One of the trees that grows around our carpark at work has these beautiful colouring and markings on the trunk.
You can't see them in the photos but there is a line of ants that scurries up and down all day long
