Quite a spectacle today at the Joe Overstreet landing. A swarm of blind mosquitoes (AKA "chizywinks, see: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chironomidae) were being pursued / eaten by thousands of tree swallows.

A Tree Swallow makes a landing on a tree stump which contained their nest. Guess they didn'tlike the houses nearby -DSC06538
I have been asked to give a presentation on "Birding" to a local group. What an eye opener! I have discovered that my files are not as search friendly as I thought they were--a major reorganization has started. (Would rather be out in the field than at the computer!) On the plus side, I am discovering shots previously taken that I have not seen for awhile. This one was taken in Alaska a couple of years ago and I can remember following him, trying to get a shot as he swooped over a marsh gathering nesting material. Finally he landed for a few seconds and I clicked!!

What a fun (and exhausting) challenge trying to capture one of these speed demons flying. But so worth it! Santa Margarita Lake, CA.
I guess the nest box has been patched up over the years but still is being used as a repose for bringing more life into the world
The Tree Swallows had returned to the pasture below the house. The female with her iridescent shimmer was a welcome sight in the bright sunlight.....which was also quite welcome after the cloud filled days.
The Tree Swallows have arrived and have started picking out homesites. I saw over forty birds during the course of the day. Nice to see so many!
Lots of these around but hardly see one perched on branch, instead of on nest box or wire.

These two were prepping their nesting hole and took a moment for some togetherness. Wood Lake Nature Center MN
Didn't see any female Tree Swallows today but the males were out in full force. Nice to have them back.
Thank you for visiting my site and taking the time to leave a comment. Truly appreciated!

Son nom anglais est évocateur de son comportement. En effet, on la retrouve souvent perchée dans les arbres dans lesquelles elle y fait aussi son nid.
His English name is evocative of his behavior. Indeed, it is often found perched in the trees in which it also makes its nest.
This is the same bird that I posted yesterday, just from a “slightly” different angle. In this picture the glossy blue upperparts are well-visible as well as the difference to the black wings and tail.
The genus genus name Tachycineta translates to “moving quickly” from Ancient Greek “kinein” - to move - and “takhys” meaning rapid or fast. Bicolor refers to the swallow being two-colored although it could maybe be either considered monocolored for the blue upperparts or tricolored if you want to count black and white as colors too. ;)
A Tree Swallow, Tachycineta bicolor, perched near a lake a few minutes from my home. I recently helped place four new nest boxes at the lake that should be home to Eastern Bluebirds, Tree Swallows, and Carolina Chickadees in the coming years.
