Canon FD300mm f/2.8 and x1.4 extender

I hope everyone enjoys this image! :D

This handsome aerialist was in the middle of a preening session.

Cette jolie hirondelle se refaisait une beauté entre deux vols.

I had a few hours to my self and walked around a pond to stretch my legs. I discovered nesting boxes for Tree Swallows and learned about their behavior.

I set up the tripod and focuses on a nesting box. I used a remote trigger to snap photos when I thought I saw something interesting. Many photos were deleted. This one was cropped a lot.

I have been busy moving horses to a new barn. and cleaning up the old one as we depart. I shoveled nearly 4 tons of gravel into a wheel barrow and moved it into the paddocks for raking yesterday. Claudia now has all five healthy horses in the same barn, which has a riding ring and round pen.

Feeding the fledgling, the adult almost appears to hover while delivering the meal.

Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) have returned! Oh, joy.

Thank you all for the kind words. These swallows look just remarkable flying so swiftly.

Comme son nom anglais l'indique, on la retrouve souvent perchée sur une branche...

As its English name indicates, it is often found perched on a branch ...

A pair of Tree Swallow chicks peer out of the nesting box in anticipation of a parent bringing food located on the Gilles Lake Promenade in the Gillies Lake Conservation Area in the City of Timmins in Northeastern Ontario Canada

In one week these young chicks have grown in size considerably.

Tree Swallows have returned to nest in the box we have put up in our back yard. This is the fifth year and all have been successful except the first year when we were away and not around to chase off intruders. We came back to broken eggs in the box and suspect a wren got in. Last year six successfully fledged. They are starting to bring grass to the box so we will see what this year brings. I don't think it is the same couple each year because behavior has been different but perhaps youngsters from previous years. This year one swallow seemed to know exactly where the box and opening should be. Taken in my back yard in Calgary, Alberta. Below is a link to the previous years.

Look at how perfectly he balances on that thin sign.

In these pandemic times, it is sometimes hard to take flight whenever we want to. For those with ME/CFS, it must mean even more limitations. The ways we want to show support are limited with strict protocols. But, there are still ways to lift someone’s spirits and to show they are not alone. Make someone smile this week! (ME/CFS Awareness Week).

In spite of all the trouble that the swallows had trying to nest in our yard, they managed to raise 4 babies. 9 eggs were taken by a Wren and white feathers were removed from the box. But oddly enough, when I dropped some darker feathers in the box, the wren did not remove those. But I think the successful parents were a different pair. The first male was hardly ever around but these two were the most attentive parents that I have ever seen in our yard. I hardly had a chance to take any pictures because as soon as one left the box, the other one immediately went in. They were a pleasure to watch but not so easy to take photos of because they hardly ever sat still. Taken in my yard in Calgary, Alberta.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

I have partnered with the city of Richmond now for 2 years in a Tree Swallow nest box project in 3 city parks. This year we are off to a great start. Most of the nest boxes are occupied with huge increases in occupancy rates. Also most of the swallows are laying 6 eggs this year rather than 4-5 which is a great sign.

Adults can feed up to 7000 insects a day to their young.

This is a small series on a beautiful male Tree Swallow.

I was trying for Mountain Bluebirds but they were still very skittish. So I was happy that this swallow posed nicely for me. Taken north of Calgary, Alberta.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

Part of a small flock congregating near the beach. Seemed, late in the year to see them, but I'm not that familiar with their migration habits.

From a forgotten series taken in August.
