Ces vieilles perches, au bord du chemin, sont de plus en plus rares. Je vais À Alfred pour photographier les oiseaux qui se tiennent sur ces vieilles perches. / These old poles, by the side of the road, are rare. I go to Alfred to photograph the birds that stand on these old perches.

"Despite its name, the Tree Swallow is a bird of open fields, meadows, and marshes, a species that uses trees only for nesting and occasional roosting. And yet its name is fitting, as no other trait has so singularly distinguished this species as its decision of where to nest. Not diligent builders, Tree Swallows must rely heavily on woodpeckers and other species to excavate and abandon tree cavities in which they can raise their own young." Birds of the World

Tree Swallows, more so than other swallows I have observed, frequently hover hummingbird-like as they deliver food to their offspring. This parent stuck around to make sure dinner stayed put. On Mud Lake.

Orbiting the nest box they have chosen to occupy the last few years. Enjoying them for the short time they are here.

"Handsome aerialists with deep-blue iridescent backs and clean white fronts, Tree Swallows are a familiar sight in summer fields and wetlands across northern North America. They chase after flying insects with acrobatic twists and turns, their steely blue-green feathers flashing in the sunlight. Tree Swallows nest in tree cavities; they also readily take up residence in nest boxes."

Tree Swallows returned to build a nest for the second year!

My husband built nesting boxes to proper specifications and affixed them to tall metal poles. In Alaska chickadees thought these were just dandy.

Can you see the piece of long grass this swallow carries? And grass emerging from the bottom of the box? We clean the boxes thoroughly after use. Or my husband does ;)

I hope these swallows come back to nest in my yard this year. I had them nesting for several years and miss them. This one was taken west of Calgary, Alberta.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

One of the wild Tree Swallows that was nesting in our yard last year (2019). I think this is the female but I really couldn't tell them apart. Looking forward to their return which will be soon. Taken in Calgary, Alberta.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.
