At least 12 million trees have recently died in California due to long-term drought and bugs. Hardest hit are firs and pines. With the lack of water, the needle-covered trees are unable to secrete the sticky resin to fight off bark beetle infestations. Mild winters also don't kill off as many of the bugs. The problem will become more pronounced as California grows hotter and drier.
