The friend with whom I was walking said she'd never been so close to a rabbit. I think I probably had . . . but I'd never been so close to a wild rabbit that clearly knew I was there and seemed totally unconcerned. It was on a public hiking trail, and the creatures tend to allow people a bit closer than usual, but this rabbit is too young to be quite this casual and nonchalant. It doesn't yet understand danger well enough to be this careless, and an older rabbit would not have been so casual. It was still in the same place when we returned perhaps twenty minutes later, though this time a family with a small child and a dog were not far behind us, and the rabbit decided it was time to leave.

A few hundred feet from Big Sable Point Lighthouse.
A mantis emerged from the morning chill to catch the warm of the sun. A very hot and intense sunlight indeed but a clever improvisation, to loll at the bottom of the leaf for the gentle glow. The diffused sunlight cast the right intensity with gentler warm, accentuating the translucency of colours.

But I still love her dearly.
Not too keen on spiders, but couldn't resist this chap with the autumn sun shining right through him.
