*explore march 7, 2008. thank you very much to all of you who made it so.* this, if i am not mistaken, was taken in the morning around nine am in 2006. when i got up i was expecting it to be sunny sunshine all around. but too bad, it was cloudy, a bit humid and the lighting was really bad. but the best thing this place had was peace and quiet. i wouldn't mind going there again. hopefully soon...

This morning, Tranquility Bay was very quiet indeed. Most of the bird photographers gathered at a now-dry part of the wetlands, using this opportunity to get those special shots of Black-fronted Dotterels. I always avoid crowds, especially on land that should belong to the birds. Three Nankeen Night Herons enjoyed those quiet moments until a band of three Black-fronted Dotterels arrived... The opposite shore became very lively and then I tried my luck with the little rascals.

We have two families staying with us tonight. One Dutch, one German, and each had had their national flag raised on our flagpole for their arrival. Something about the German flag didn't seem right when it was first raised with the red band uppermost. Fortunately I realised my error before they arrived and put the flag the other way up. Next up were the Dutch, red or blue uppermost? I googled it and made sure that, opposite to the German flag, red goes uppermost.
But both families had wandered down to the Loch Shiel jetty (the Germans meeting a 12 point stag on the way) and both had told me how fantastically tranquil a spot it is (despite a tiny number of irritating midges), and they love it. Completely understanding why people like me come here. Loch Shiel easily trumps Loch Lomond or Loch Ness and must be one of the most special lochs in Scotland. It has so much history being the scene for Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion and all that, Viking battles and the Quickening scenes from Highlander, the movie. In this the loch views are at Glenfinnan, the swordfights in the ancient Caledonian forest around Ariundle, the running scene on the beaches towards Arisaig...and of course the mountain scenes are in Skye......and the village scenes are just like it is in Acharacle today!
Acharacle truly is a place of surprises. (There really aren't many midges this year)

On day #3, we set off up Eagle Creek with Punchbowl Falls as our main objective for the morning. I had seen more than few shots of this particular waterfall over the past few years, and it was one of the main motivations for me to drop everything in the middle of a busy Spring semester and head up to Oregon for a few days.
When we finally arrived, it was clear that we weren't the only ones to have heard of this particular spot. While we were shooting, somewhere between 50-75 people came up behind us and posed for photos, and had picnic lunches while small kids scrambled in every direction. Our timing was pretty good as we arrived just before the mob and I had already fired off quite a few shots before the masses began to mooch in on the thin strip of shoreline that offered a view of the falls. The smart ones in my group hauled the chest waders all the way up from the car, but I was feeling pretty shot from the day before and left mine in the Cherokee.
Punchbowl Falls is usually shot vertically to great effect, but as I began shooting, the wider view caught my eye first. In spite of the fact that hordes were soon descending on us, I couldn't help but wonder which incredibly fortunate human being was the first to set eyes on this location. How long must he or she must have stood there staring? Before picnics, and hordes of photographers, and instagram, and iPads, and selfie sticks. Nothing but that view and the sound of the water cascading down from those rocks. If it was me, I would have sat there for weeks.
