The eastbound Empire Builder led by P42DC 174 pulls into Shelby, MT running almost an hour late. The Amtrak crew was none too happy that the freight headed up by BNSF Dash 9 #999 was occupying the track in front of the station and the train had to pull down past the station then back up through the switch to reach the station platform.

This is one of the first railroad shots I ever took with a 35mm camera. It was September 1982, Labor Day weekend I think, and I was 12 years old, about to turn 13 in a few weeks. That's one of my childhood friends, James Burrell, standing in front of the diesel.

Frontier Town Train - currently owned by Utica Chenango and Susquehanna Valley LLC
The train set was purchased from the Marshall Farm in Fitchburg, Massachusetts where it was used as a stationary exhibit in their petting zoo venue. The train was purchased by the Marshall Farm in 2004 at auction from the defunct Frontier Town in North Hudson, New York.
Frontier Town operated for many years with a western themed amusement venue complete with cowboy and Indian shootouts, gunslinger demonstrations and rodeo round ups. The park is a legendary piece of upstate kitsch and a fond memory for many upstate New Yorkers who visited the park from the 1950's through the end of operations there in the 1990's. The train was used to transport visitors from the parking lot to the theme park where, passengers were usually held up at gunpoint by the train robbers who frequented the wooded area along the way.
The train consists of a locomotive and two passenger cars. The locomotive is a Fate-Root-Heath and was probably built around 1920 by the company which also built Plymouth locomotives. The unit is a two foot gauge industrial locomotive and was most likely used by a quarry or mine to move hopper cars within a contained plant. The engine has been modified to look like a Porter steam engine as Frontier Town had a Porter and this unit was built to simulate the steamer. The passenger cars are thirty feet long with wooden seating.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Gee Creek, TN in April 2008
On April 11, 2008 Dad found Knoxville & Holston River GP9 2391 sitting at Gee Creek, TN with three restored passenger cars. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum leases this unit - which was built as L&N 511 - for use on their "Hook & Eye" line tourist train to Copperhill, TN.
On this day Dad found 2391 sitting with one car from the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA, one lettered TVRM and one in L&N blue and lettered for L&N.
Dad talked to a TVRM employee working to get this train ready for the upcoming weekend and the guy told Dad that TVRM will be letting this unit go back to KXHR soon because of the expense. TVRM has another Geep of their own under restoration that will join TVRM (NC&StL) 710 on this run and the new unit will be painted in Southern Railway colors. The guy didn't know if it was a hi-nose geep (we can hope!) or if it would be green or black (I hope green!).

On March 5 I had passed through Helena, MT and saw MRL 290 on a westbound freight. I shot a bad shot, but I was afraid I'd not see that unit again. When I posted the shot later that night I lamented the fact that I wished I could get a better shot.
On March 7, 2008 traffic was moving again after the derailment on the 5th and I was taking it all in. I heard on the scanner that an eastbound unit grain train was going to set out a helper at Livingston before leaving town. Much to my surprise, it was MRL 290, and they sat her out right in front of me!

Ever since the 1970s it wasn't unusual to see Southern Pacific power on the L&N in the mountains of East Tennessee. Even after UP absorbed SP, UP units were fairly common. Here's an SP B30-7 in the Etowah, TN yard in October 1997.

South East Coal Company, a unit of Tepee Coal, owned and operated their own locomotives, including old ALCo switchers, second-hand GP20s and newly bought GP38-2s.
SECX ordered three GP38-2s to complement their six ex-UP GP20s in 1979. Built in March 1979, they were delivered in April of that year. Ironically, as their GP20s had come from UP, SECX's GP38-2s would end up on the UP. After SECX went bankrupt this unit became C&NW 4701. When UP absorbed C&NW this unit became UP 2070 and was later renumbered UP 400. Today it is still operating as CEFX 400.
