Trail at Shaw Nature Reserve

A trail in Linley Valley Park, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, has been named for the late Barbara Hourston who led the fundraising campaign to purchase the land for the city.

A four by eight lean-to with tarp extension provides safe haven for business in snow or rain. Trail provided and kept clear by weary hoomans.

I generally avoid the main trail in the winter, when it's flooded.

A wander around Amble on the Northumberland coast this week to check out some of the installations on a new sculpture trail.

This one is called 'Flock Sphere', created by Rob Mulholland.

The artist explained: "The sculpture has been created using cut stainless steel bird shapes that are interlocked and welded to form a three dimensional sphere. An open entrance on one side allows people the opportunity to enter the sphere and become part of the bird flock, thus creating an immersive and unique experience.".

This is in Limekiln State Park in Big Sur, California. Quite a beautiful park with campsites, trails, redwoods and a 100 foot waterfall. It has it all! There are three trails to explore. One is the Hare creek trail where these images were taken. Then there is the Limekiln Falls trail which is a little more treacherous with logs and creek switchbacks you have to cross. Then there is the Limekiln trail itself which takes you back in time to the old lime kilns where workers purified lime dug from the surrounding mountains and sent it by ship to San Francisco to use in cement for the skyscrapers. The workers used ancient redwood trees to fire the kilns. I'm glad they didn't totally wipe out the forest!

This swift moving creek along the Cataract Trail feeds the Cataract Falls in the Mt Tamalpais watershed. A 3 shot HDR capture. The hike was around 6 miles round trip!

The trail led from deep shadow to brilliant sun, around and through shallow pools, into alcoves, along vertical cliffs--a delightful journey. Grand Staircase of the Escalante National Monument.

This trail follows the shoreline of a section of Lake Brantingham and proved a great place to have a short hike.

Woke up to a sky full of vapour trails and wonderful clouds. Maybe all the planes were heading back to base after the Farnborough Airshow.

The walking trail beside the Etobicoke Creek

Years ago, trains ran across this little river; now it's for bikers and hikers [who are not tall enough to be seen from where I am standing, where the road crosses the river. I had hoped to get a picture of my biking family as they rode by, but it didn't happen.]

The Oregon Trail was the primary path of emigrant migration in the United States from the 1830s until the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Up to half a million people took the path in hopes of a better life in the west.

This is Mitchell Pass at Scotts Bluff (now a national monument). The trail bottle-necked here and as a result the wagons ground ruts into the soft rock below that are still visible today.

The Pipiwai Trail is a must stop along the Road to Hana. Walking through the bamboo forest, found on the second half of the trail, almost feels spiritual. It was fairly busy on the trail, but even so, I could wait a minute or two for people to pass and the trail to empty. Then I would experience a cathedral-like silence to revel in the moment before eventually starting back up the trail to Waimoku Falls.

From Deadman Peaks. Fantastic portion of the CDT I originally "found" by hunting down a geocache S of Cuba. I had limited time to hike this section but from what I saw ahead and what I remember from a more northern section this is an easily doable trail from here all the way to mesa Portales. I believe to continue on to Cuba you have to go up and over Mesa Portales.

An afternoon of walking trails in Folsom.

Yes, folks . . . it finally stopped raining. At least long enough to cycle up to Leechtown at the end of the Galloping Goose Trail.

Hikers descend the trail from the ice caves of Eisreisenwelt above the town of Werfen, Austria

Over a period of three weeks, our July 2013 visit to Europe took us to parts of Germany and Austria, and to London before that. The London portion of the trip was almost wholly an urban experience, but the time in Germany (with side trips into Austria) was quite a bit more varied. One significant difference is that while we hit our share of tourist areas, that's not all we did since a) we were visiting relatives who are long-time residents of Germany and b) we traveled, as we often do, without a specific advance plan about what we would visit - at least beyond our fixed plan to stay in certain places on certain dates. Perhaps for this reason, and because I travel as a photographer as much as a tourist, the photographs from this trip may seem a bit eclectic and will cover a wide range of subjects.

This photograph was made at a popular tourist attraction not far from Salzburg and above town of Werfen, the Eisriesenwelt, also known as the Eisriesenwelt Ice Cave. There is a lot to say about this place - too much for this post - but I'll give a bit of background. The cave is located far up the mountainside - more of a cliff, actually - above the town. The popular tour visits amazing underground ice formations near the mouth of the cave, though I understand that the cave system goes much farther back into the mountains. After driving up from Werfen, you walk uphill a short distance to a ski-lift style cable car system that takes you up the steep face almost to the cave... but you still have an additional uphill walk from there to the cave itself. (This being Europe, though, you can stop at the parking lot, the lower end of the tram, the upper end of the tram, and the same places going back down to sit, have a bite to eat, and drink a beer!) The trail between the upper tram station and the entrance to the cave is quite something. It traverses terrain that would scare the life out of people not used to very high and very exposed places - though a very civilized path has been built along the edge of the void, covered in some places for protection from rockfall. In this photograph, a section of the trail winds around a promontory with the deep Salzach Valley and Alpine ridges beyond.

The historic Iditarod Trail starts in Seward, Alaska. The modern Idatarod race begins in downtown Anchorage. They meet up north or Anchorage for the route to Nome, immortalized in the animated film, "Balto." (Your kids and grandkids will love it.)

Congress has designated the Iditarod as a National Historic Trail, though not all of it is actually passable (or marked). The Crow Pass trail that we took from Eagle River to Girdwood follows the NHT more often than not. The modern hiking trail requires a hand tram high above Winner's Creek, That's not really a practical option for dog teams, and the historic trail uses a different route that doesn't cross a deep gorge. I don't think dog teams bother with that route - in winter, I'd use the trailhead to the Crow Pass Trail to get over the Chugach Mountains with a dogsled.

This sign is just outside the Eagle River Nature Center, near the start of our backpacking trip. Anyone who can walk a flat trail, and perhaps those in a wheelchair, could reach it.

Abineau Trail is a steep 1,800 foot climb over two miles up the slopes of the San Francisco Peaks through Abineau Canyon. The trail meets the Waterline Trail at the top, which can be followed down to Bear Jaw Trail to return to the trailhead. Each leg of the loop is around two miles long, plus a 0.4 mile connector trail from the trailhead to the loop, making a total loop hike of seven miles. The loop is one of the quintessential autumn hikes in the San Francisco Peaks. Aspens along all three legs of the loop turn gold, and falling leaves carpet the forest floor and decorate the conifers.

A storm system passed through the area October 4-7, 2015, raining at lower elevations and snowing on the upper reaches of the San Francisco Peaks. The snow-capped Peaks were a wonderful treat after the few days grey, cloudy, wet weather that had put a damper on outdoor activity.

The Chicago and North Western Railway crosses the Niobrara River near Valentine, Nebraska. It is now part of the Cowboy Trail, a rails-to-trails multi-use recreational trail. The Niobrara River, "Running Water" as it was known to the Indians and early settlers, extends across northern Nebraska from its narrow beginnings 50 miles inside eastern Wyoming. It empties into the Missouri River some 486 miles later. The main sources of inflow are tributaries and Sandhills groundwater. In May of 1991, a 76-mile stretch of the river was added to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System to preserve unique biological features. (Nebraska Game and Parks Commission website)

The Niobrara National Scenic River is a unique crossroads where many species of plants and animals coexist unlike anywhere else. High water quality and the relatively free-flowing nature of the Niobrara support diverse life while unique fossil-filled sandstone cliffs host over 200 waterfalls. (National Park Service website)

A section of the Niobrara River near Valentine runs through Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge. Once a frontier military fort, the Refuge supports an exceptional diversity of plants and wildlife representative of the northern Great Plains and geographic regions east, west, north, and south of here. Fenced herds of elk and bison are protected at the Refuge. Free-ranging elk, mule deer, white tail deer, coyotes, red foxes, bobcats, mink, badgers, and porcupine can also be found here along with over 200 species of birds and 24 species of amphibians including rattlesnakes. Trout inhabit cold water tributaries and channel catfish are in the Niobrara River. (National Wildlife Refuge System website)

----------

We drove eastward on Outlaw Trail Scenic Byway (NE-12) from Valentine to the Refuge. We then returned westward on Bridges to Buttes Byway (US-20) to Chadron, Nebraska, where we spent the night.

We traveled 507 miles on this day. We were on the road for just over 13 hours. We gained an hour when we entered the Mountain time zone near Kilgore. We had breakfast at McDonald's in Beatrice, NE, lunch was at Runza in Norfolk, NE, and we ate supper at Frosty Drive-In in Valentine, NE. This gave me one "regional favorite" and one "local favorite" since Frosty Drive-In is not a chain. I should get extra points for that one. :-))

Star trail is a type of photograph that uses long exposure times to capture the apparent motion of stars in the night sky due to Earth's rotation. A star-trail photograph shows individual stars as streaks across the image, with longer exposures yielding longer arcs.

This is the trail that leads from the meadow to the creek.

I have to break trail with my snow shoes to get up and down this long hill.

It is always beautiful in the winter with the long tree shadows over the white snow.
