I don't typically visit the same place within weeks of each other but Alexander Springs offered a place to camp on short notice during Florida's premier outdoors season. This was the first trail I walked using my new Nikon D750 full frame, trying to snap some shots in between children running through.

Light trails along the road in Acadia National Park.

This is another attempt at capturing this interesting rock at night. Nestled along Badwater Road in plain sight near Mars Hill is a strange chunk of eroded basalt known as Mushroom Rock. At one point it had its own parking area and was listed on AAA’s 49 points of interest in the park. Now it has dropped off the list after the constant attention caused numerous breaks, most of which were caused by people sadly. It’s still a rock I find very interesting. Aeolian processes have smoothed the surface of this ventifact as wind borne particles slowly blast the surface. One 43 minute exposure. In this case the color of the scene was not adding to anything, and I like a black and white rendering much better. The lights in the distance are from Furnace Creek.

Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail was the major route for immigrants traveling from the settlements on the edge of the eastern United States to the promised land of Oregon. It extended 2170 miles from its eastern departure points of St. Joseph, Westport, and Independence, Missouri, to its final destination in the Willamette Valley of present day Oregon. Much of its eastern segment followed the valleys of the Platte and North Platte Rivers.

Some immigrants were bound for California instead of Oregon. They turned Southward from the Oregon Trail in what is now eastern Idaho and followed the California Trail through the Great Basin and across the Sierra Nevada into California.

More than 350,000 people made the trek westward between 1841 and 1867. Their numbers swelled from a trickle in 1841 to almost 50,000 in 1852. They endured rugged country, searing heat, violent prairie storms, accidents, and the ravages of cholera. Their reward was the fertile farming country, the rich forests, and the mild climate of the fabled Oregon country.

Capturing light trails is something I've been wanting to get the hang of for a long time now, but I've struggled with exposure and timing. I'm very happy with this attempt at Tower Bridge, London however - it's a composition of two photos capturing the traffic over 10 second bursts (and shot in the middle of the road.. eek!)

The Apache Trail in Arizona was a stagecoach trail that ran through the Superstition Mountains. It was named the Apache Trail after the Apache Indians who originally used this trail to move through the Superstition Mountains.

The current Apache Trail links Apache Junction (33.4152°N 111.5807°W) at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Theodore Roosevelt Lake (33.6725°N 111.1531°W), through the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest.

Today, the majority of Apache Trail remains unpaved, turning into a dirt road a few miles up from Tortilla Flat, and continuing as such for nearly the full remainder of its length. The section east of Apache Junction is known officially as State Route 88. It is also the main traffic corridor through Apache Junction, turning into Main Street as the road passes into Mesa, and regains the Apache name by becoming Apache Boulevard in Tempe, ending at Mill Avenue. Prior to the completion of the Superstition Freeway in 1992, the Apache Junction portion of the Apache Trail was part of US Highway 60, which was rerouted to the Superstition Freeway once it was completed.

The Trail winds steeply through 40 miles (64 km) of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes like Canyon Lake and Apache Lake. The narrow, winding road is unpaved from just east of the town of Tortilla Flat to Roosevelt Dam; there are steep cliff drops and little in the way of safety barriers. The trail requires caution when driving and it is not recommended for large RVs, SUVs, or caravans. Some large RV rental companies in the US do not allow their vehicles to be taken on this route.

Fun day fat biking at Oka trails with my son Alex. Not much snow in our area so we ventured a bit North this morning.

This one comprises 4x 15s Exposures, layered/stacked using Photoshop. (As there weren't enough cars and trains in any individual shot).

Combined in 'lighter' mode (think that's the word for it - i.e. anything darker is ignored, any lighter area is added to the output image).

A look at the histogram makes this image look seriously under exposed. I'm not a light-trail expert. My take on it is if I boost the exposure then the contrast between the background and the actual light trails is diminished. So... is it really under-exposed?

An hour or so either side of midnight. Managed a decent star trail sequence before the snow came. You would think its a bit eerie but its actually really peaceful sleeping at the old man of storr.

My visual offering for today is this star-trails image that I created from 218 still-frame photos that I shot in late April of 2019. During the 100 km (60 mi) drive from my home in Sydney, Australia, to the rock shelf at Black Head at Gerroa, there was no hint of any clouds overhead to obscure the stars. As I looked at my test shots, though, I could see that there was a haze of cloud over towards the west, right where I’d pointed my lens. Still, I’d driven so far and didn’t want to pack up and head home straight away, so set my camera the task of shooting a series of images to create either a star-trails shot like today’s, and/or a time-lapse video sequence.

The clouds are what caused the breaks in stars’ trails, and also made it difficult to get the exposure settings right so that the ground and the sky were exposed correctly. In fact, the reflections of the star-trails in the rock pools show more colour and definition than the originals up above. The bright yellow blob of light towards the right of the scene is from the supergiant star Betelgeuse, whose broken streak you can see heading towards the distant mountains.

During the period that the photos were being taken, several waves broke on the rock shelf’s edge, and you can see their plumes of spray frozen in time in my final composition. I also captured the light trails from a few Melbourne-bound aircraft, and the water’s surface mirrored two of them.

I captured each of the 218 photos using a Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera, a Yongnuo 50mm f/1.4 lens @ f/1.8, using an exposure time of 6.0 seconds @ ISO 800.

Mountain trail Hurricane Ridge, Port Angeles, Washington

Little did we know when we hiked this trail, that a few days later we'd be hiking on the north side of the same ridge. Anyhow, this is kind of a weird trail. You start right in Telluride and climb a mile or so up a dusty path overlooking the town and and across at the ski lifts and gondola. But, then you turn north and wander thru some gorgeous aspen forests till you finally break out high above with far-reaching views to the south and west. It's about 8 mi RT (3000' of gain) to the basin where we topped out at 11,800' ... too tired to finish the last 300' to the pass (it can be done as a 12 mi loop). It was a great conditioner and ultimately got us well acclimated for the Blue Lakes hike that we did later.

The foot trail up to Zapata Fall's in the area of The Sand Dune's - foot path wasn't to bad but had a couple friend's take the dirt road to the parking lot for this which in my truck was real rough - later to told them they had to have been brain dead to take a motorcycle and Can-am up - dirt road not maintained with some large rocks,.

This is my first attempt at night trails. I decided to go to Fish Hill Broadway, which is a quite well known twisting road. Took loads of images and this one is the best. Used my 10-24mm lens, cable release, but forgot my gloves..freezing!

Andrews Bald Trail, which is a segment of the Forney Ridge Trail, is one of the most popular trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Beginning in the extremely busy Clingman's Dome parking log, the trail travels less than two miles through dense evergreen forest before reaching Andrews Bald, a treeless area that is one of only two balds in the park. On a clear day the views from the bald are known to be spectacular, and a special treat occurs in late June when azalea blooms bring the bald to life. The excellent views, foliage, and lack of rapid or significant elevation changes are all reasons for this trail's significant use, In recent years the trail has undergone renovation, and hikers will find many portions of the trail have been sculpted with stairs and the like for ease of travel.
