This lighthouse in A Coruña, Spain was built by the Romans in the 1st century AD. It was built to warn ships away from the rocky coastline facing the Atlantic Ocean in northwest Spain. You can see what was probably an outside ramp that spiraled up the tower.

The Tower of Hercules (Galician: Torre de Hércules, Spanish: Torre de Hércules) is the oldest known extant Roman lighthouse. Built in the 1st century, the tower is located on a peninsula about 2.4 km (1.5 mi) from the center of A Coruña, Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Until the 20th century, it was known as the Farum Brigantium. The Latin word farum is derived from the Greek Φάρος, Pharos, for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The structure stands 55 metres (180 ft) tall and overlooks the North Atlantic coast of Spain. The tower was renovated in 1791.
There is a sculpture garden on the grounds of the lighthouse featuring works by Pablo Serrano and Francisco Leiro [es]. The Tower of Hercules is a National Monument of Spain and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 27 June 2009. It is the second-tallest lighthouse in Spain, after the Faro de Chipiona.
I wanted the car in this shot to give a sense of just how huge the rock formations are in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah, and how abruptly they rise from a flat plain. This Courthouse Towers peak is way bigger than most buildings in Philadelphia. Okay, that was a bad example. Most things are bigger than a Philadelphia building. I haven't been able to Flickr much or take many photos lately, other than the ones for work (existing towers and vacant land/woods for new-build sites, whcih is boring). I was out walking some sites with our A&E firm on a foggy morning a while back and shot this 240 footer with my work camera (my old point & shoot). Hopefully I'll be able to visit everyone's streams in the next few days.... Until then, hope you are enjoying your Easter weekend!

The Great Tower (which used to be called The Keep) of Dover Castle. This tower was ordered by Henry II, 12th Century.
The Dover Castle site is particularly interesting as it contains remains of fortifications from Iron Age, Roman, Norman, medieval, Napoleonic, WW2, and Cold War eras.

The work references both the ziggurats of ancient Mesopotamia and the early Islamic minaret in the city of Samara. The artist left Iraq in 1984 as a political refugee and now lives and works in London. His works serve as metaphors for the human struggle to reach the top.
Repentance Tower sits on the top of the hill known as Trailtrow with a magnificent view to the south all the way to the Solway Firth and England on its other side. It gets its name from the word "Repentance" carved over the entry door. Never lived in, it was built as a watchtower in the mid 16th century by John Maxwell, Lord Herries. There are several stories of how it got its name, most of them involving atonement for bloody deeds. The most credible however is more prosaic. This says that the chapel that formerly stood here (there is still a graveyard adjoining the tower) was pulled down for stone used in the building of Hoddam Castle half a mile to the north in a loop of the River Annan. On learning of this the Archbishop of Glasgow constrained Maxwell to atone for this desecration by building the watchtower as a benefit to the local area. There is a stone beacon for a watch-fire to "... be keeped, and never faill burning, so long as the Englishmen remain in Scotland", and there was a bell to be rung "... whenever the Fray is, or that the Watchman seiing the Thieves disobedient come over the Water of Annand or thereabout, and knowes them to be enemies; ..."
La Isla de los Tiburones used to be a major lighthouse for the entrance into the Caraval domain's waterways, but has since fallen into disrepair, and is all but forgotten. The perfect place to stash away a dissident princess and her guard.
I seem to either be doing retakes or remakes lately, so this is a remake of my old little tower.

A week ago I visited Rome for a few days. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with this city. Great architecture, good food, nice people.

Brizlee Tower, Alnwick is a grade I listed folly in Hulne Park, Northumberland. The tower was built in 1871 for Hugh Percy, 1st Duke of Northumberland, as a memorial to his wife, Lady Elizabeth Seymore, who died in 1776. The tower is attributed to Robert Adam or his brother John
The Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of Istanbul, Turkey, just to the north of the Golden Horn's junction with the Bosphorus. One of the city's most striking landmarks, it is a high, cone-capped cylinder that dominates the skyline and offers a panoramic vista of Istanbul's historic peninsula and its environs.
