Qatar structures stand out with architectural designs beyond the ordinary. A signature if I may say. One thing I notice though, is that in most buidlings, they represent their cultural heritage being fishermen. In a number of designs, shapes represent part of their dnow (indigenous boat).

Smailholm Tower, a peel tower near the small village of Smailholm in the Scottish Borders. A couple of visits to this place yesterday, in daylight to check the location and then just when the sun was low in the sky, when this shot was taken.

Absure Tower: At 144 feet tall with a unique facade and a commanding location at 12th and Main Streets, this building helps define downtown Wheeling. Designed by architect Charles W. Bates, who also designed Wheeling's Capitol Theatre, this 10-story building opened in 1915. This building originally housed the National Bank of West Virginia.

Leaning Tower of Pisa, Toscana, Italia. I didn't want to take the obvious leaning photo! 1173-1372.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the Campanile, (a freestanding bell tower), of Pisa Cathedral. It is known for its nearly four-degree lean, the result of unstable foundations.

The height of the tower is 55.86 metres) on the low side and 56.67 m on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 2.44 m. Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tonnes. There are 296 or 294 steps because the seventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase because of the tilt.

The tower began to lean during construction in the 12th century, due to soft ground which could not support the structure's weight. It worsened through the completion of construction in the 14th century. By 1990, the tilt was 5.5 degrees and the tower was in danger of collapse. The structure was stabilised 1993-2001, reducing the tilt to 3.97 degrees.

Il Tower Bridge è un ponte mobile di Londra situato sul fiume Tamigi. Il suo nome deriva dal fatto che collega il distretto di Southwark alla Torre di Londra.

Monster and Washer Woman Towers are eroding monoliths of Wingate Sandstone rising 1400 feet (426 m) above the White Rim in Canyonlands National Park. When viewed from the north or south Washer Woman looks like its namesake with an arch formed by the "arms." The towers are backed by the Island in the Sky, a high plateau partially obscured here by an oncoming snow squall.

The White Rim Sandstone in the foreground is undercut by the Middle Fork of Buck Canyon. Recent precipitation has partially filled a pothole providing a mirror reflecting Monster and Washer Woman.

Repentance Tower sits on the top of the hill known as Trailtrow with a magnificent view to the south all the way to the Solway Firth and England on its other side. It gets its name from the word "Repentance" carved over the entry door. Never lived in, it was built as a watchtower in the mid 16th century by John Maxwell, Lord Herries. There are several stories of how it got its name, most of them involving atonement for bloody deeds. The most credible however is more prosaic. This says that the chapel that formerly stood here (there is still a graveyard adjoining the tower) was pulled down for stone used in the building of Hoddam Castle half a mile to the north in a loop of the River Annan. On learning of this the Archbishop of Glasgow constrained Maxwell to atone for this desecration by building the watchtower as a benefit to the local area. There is a stone beacon for a watch-fire to "... be keeped, and never faill burning, so long as the Englishmen remain in Scotland", and there was a bell to be rung "... whenever the Fray is, or that the Watchman seiing the Thieves disobedient come over the Water of Annand or thereabout, and knowes them to be enemies; ..."

Built in 1577 as part of the town's ( Berwick-upon-Tweed) defence against raids.
