This is what happens when things go wrong.
We are making the part on the left. Material is 3/8 inch square, machined down to 1/4 inch round then threaded. Process takes 45 seconds from start to finish.
Material is fed into the machines 12 feet at a time.
Tool in middle is called a Roller Box Tool. The hole in it's middle is currently closed by the burnt metal. Metal was spinning at 2180 rpm. It got so hot it melted apart from the bar.
And for the first time in 19 yrs, the oil coolant flowing over the working surface caught fire. Solution to the fire..... turn off the supply.
Some days it does not pay to get out of bed!! But this is fixable and the machine is reset and ready for production.
FYI..... the machine is a Brown & Sharpe No. 2G Automatic Screw Machine, built in 1942.

I carry my pencils, pens, and brushes in a leather pencil case - and here is the lineup: a mechanical pencil, white eraser, an 01 and 05 Zig Millenium pens (or Pigma Micron), 4 Niji waterbrushes (small, medium, large, and flat), a water soluble Pilot Varsity pen for some interesting ink washes, at least one watercolor pencil - usually sepia. Meet Gilda...
Her golden hair is very fine, curly doll hair and her eyes (with eyelashes), nose, eyes, eyebrows and mouth are sculptured clay. Gilda's wings are cardboard, as is her backside with wire hangar so you can hang her right up on your wall. The halo is a thick furry wire. Painted with acrylics, coated with an antique varnish.
