You always follow up a hot lead. Truth is, hot leads aren't really all that hot, most of the time they're just dead ends. but you follow up on them because you actually have a chance of getting something worth getting.
These were the cold words of comfort I wrapped myself around as I meandered down the cold damp streets of lower Manhattan, making my way to the Seaport, yet again, for another late night show at Spiegel Tent. I had just been there last weekend, for the slightly disappointing DangerList LowDownTown event, and that had hot buzz. I couldn't even find this event on the radar, it was totally underground. I had a cold, still do, and would have much rather just gone home and crawled under the covers and slept my troubles away.
But you always follow up a hot lead. Figured I stick it to 1am and duck out, 2 hours for $10, not a bad entertainment ratio. When 12:30 rolled down, and the buzz of the beer began to wear, only 50 people milling about it costume, and my tipster nowhere to be found, I figured it a bust and call it a night.
That's when she stepped forth, and lit her tongue on fire. I mean, there was more to it than that, complete with reluctant audience member volunteer, flaming torches, jab at Liberal Arts education, and several displays of fire eating. But tongue and fire is where it all kept coming back to.
It only got better from there.
And now, now, I have literally hundreds of pictures of fire and people and costumes and acrobatics and burlesque and mad mad dancing of which I simply cannot bring myself to edit down to a manageable number. A burden it has become, hardening the heart to cut away at even a moment's brief glimpse of such an enjoyable evening. And yet, ever so slowly, it is done.
More pictures to come, and thanks to MissMareck for the hot lead.

In the days of the Friday pedlars market, the Clock Tower bell tolled at 10am and let the traders in. In its day the Caledonian Market was one of the wonders of London right up till 1939. Stories abounded of punters picking up priceless treasure for a few shillings amongst the old eggcups, odd shoes, false teeth and pieces of rusty iron. A famous racing tipster called Ras Prince Monolulu dished out winners for a price. HV Morton describes the scene in “The Heart of London” and tells of a friend who picks up an Egyptian Mummy for 10 shillings.
The painter Walter Sickert, who lived nearby, haunted the market and proclaimed that it was his idea of heaven.

Starlight Park in my Life
Submitted by p.j.boylan on Thu, 12/11/2008 - 11:50am.
I admire the candid of Ms. Tierney, but the background is most interesting. I knew Starlight Park more than a quarter century later. By then there were no remnants of roller coasters or the like. The arena had been converted to a bus barn by Third Avenue Transit( taken over and operated now by the government transit op.) Many of the stucco buildings with red tile roofs were either destroyed, falling down or abandoned playgrounds for kids. That pool she is standing beside had a large sandy beach area and was of monumental proportions. It was the length of a football field, oriented east-west. At the west end, beyond the paved promenade, was a retaining wall and the land fell off sharply to the Bronx River. When this photo was taken this was largely an area that was undeveloped.
The 180th Street Crosstown trolley (X route) went by and there was the West Farms junction of several trolley routes (after 1948 all buses) about a quarter mile away. The White Plains Road IRT elevated line with a Bronx Zoo destination had a stop another few blocks further west.
In the 1940s when I frequented the place, it was because I accompanied my father, who was a soccer buff, when he went there on Sundays to doubleheaders of the German-American Soccer league. Not withstanding the leagues moniker; the NY Hungarians, Praha, Savoia, Hakoah, Eintracht, Brooklyn Wanderers, Bronx Scots, my old man's former team the NY Corinthians, and a plethora of teams with non-teutonic associations made up the league. There were professional leagues that had a larger territorial range, but almost all of the players in those days were either immigrants, or their first generation progeny. The GA was the MISL of that time. There was no real money to pay living wages to soccer players so either industrial teams, like the Uhrich Truckers in St. Louis, or semi pros - like those from the G-A league were the source of the best players in the country. Yogi Berra, and Joe Garagiola who grew up on "The Hill" in St. Louis, were part of a similar world and played soccer for local Italo-American sides there as children and teens.
I know this seems strange, when the American goalie Brad Fridl pulls down 5 million bucks from Aston Villa in Birmingham in the UK Premier League, but until the Spaniards and Italians started offering whatever wages they would to get the best players, the British paid washers to professional soccer players. Ten pounds a week was the fixed rate in the forties for UK soccer players. Liverpool offered a NYPD sergeant named Miller, who was the G-A all star teams goalie, a contract. He would have had to have taken a substantial pay cut to have gone there. Foreign wage pressures, and the fixing of games by underpaid players has changed that forever. The Post War would change everything, but meanwhile the German-American League was the best we had.
In the early 1950s, I was at Randall's Island Stadium when the G-A League All Stars beat Kaiserslauten , the German Bundesliga champions, 2-0. So Starlight Park's large playing field, north of the pool site ruins, was, along with Sterling Oval, and a field across the road from Con Edison in the south Bronx, were the places where the best soccer in the US was being played.
As a young kid, I and the sons and daughters of the immigrants tore around the ruins playing games, built fires to roast spuds and marshmallows and the like, while our parents watched the games and relived their own athletic youths. Unfortunately, it wasn't all a halcyon time in the ruins for us. Charley, a 12-year-old acquaintance, was murdered by a sexual pervert there after swimming in the Bronx River.
I never knew the place in its heyday, and I wish I had been there to ride the roller coaster and swim in such an immense pool. Still, it provided a different set of experiences and meaning to another generation.
Good-Luck,
Peter J.

This explains our kitchen
Submitted by mizvoire on Sat, 10/02/2010 - 6:14pm.
This picture finally shows me what the original kitchen in our vintage 1914 home would have looked like. My husband showed me what part of the room would have been original construction and I just couldn't picture a usable space that small. Now I see how the workspace lined up and how the kitchen functioned.
I will never complain about my kitchen being "too small" again! Looking at these old photos is always a fascinating education and it helps me keep things in perspective too.

Mice on a Plane - and that's no joke
There were dead mice in the oxygen masks, live mice under the seats and mice feces "throughout the whole aircraft," a whistle blower has told our Gannett colleagues at KSDK-TV in St. Louis about an American Airlines Boeing 767 that was brought there for maintenance.
In a video report you can watch here, the tipster tells KSDK that 900 to 1,000 mice may have been onboard. He also gave the station video he took with a hidden camera. The airline, in a written statement, said it found 17 live mice.
According to KSDK, American kept flying the jet even after the first mice were discovered.
A safety expert tells the TV station that mice are a serious hazard because of the potential damage they can do to communications gear and controls.
As serious and disturbing as this news is, we know someone's going to make the connection if we don't. So here goes: Maybe this whole thing could have been prevented if they had some Snakes on a Plane.

As you may recall, Cullman Today in conjunction with the Worthless Check Unit of the Office of District Attorney C. Wilson Blaylock and the Cullman Police Department issued a community-wide crime alert for a black female believed to be in her mid-thirties who had been on a crime spree in late 2016.
The person of interest was officially known as:
Demetria Dunn
Dunn had 219 known criminal charges on her record. She also has 16 known outstanding warrants against her in Cullman County alone. She was alleged to have been passing countless bogus checks throughout the City of Cullman and portions of Cullman County and beyond into other jurisdictions around Christmas time.

Most of Demetria Dunn’s charges involve two main areas of criminal activity:
★ Negotiating Worthless Negotiable Instruments
★ Theft By Deception
Dunn had also been charged with Failure To Appear.

Beth Richards
At the time of the community-wide crime alert, she was also in violation of probation in Cullman County for convictions linked to previous crimes. She has been imprisoned for similar charges in the past. An open bench warrant was in place for her arrest.
At the time, Beth Richards of the District Attorney’s Worthless Check Unit called Dunn a ‘super persuasive, highly intelligent, charismatic, and very conscious bad check artist’.
Within 12 hours of the issuance, the crime alert paid dividends
Following a lead generated by the joint community crime watch announcement, a citizen tipster in Blount County responded to the public request for determining the whereabouts of Dunn.
Calling Blount County 9-1-1, the caller indicated that an individual matching the description of Dunn was likely at the Jack’s Family Restaurant on Alabama Highway 79 in Locust Fork. A Blount County Sheriff’s Deputy aware of the community crime watch announcement immediately responded to the call. Arriving at the location, the deputy arrived at Jack’s finding Dunn inside.
Demetria Dunn was promptly arrested.

After being booked in Blount County, Demetria Dunn was then transferred to the Cullman County Detention Center where she remained with NO BOND until her court date and subsequent sentencing.
After the arrest, Officer Cindy Rohrscheib with the Cullman Police Department said:
“The really good news is Dunn is now off the streets where she can longer steal from people. If it weren’t for the community crime watch announcement, she’d almost certainly still be on the streets victimizing merchants ahead of the Christmas holiday. I greatly appreciate the concern and proactive response by the many citizens who came forward since the story and announcement last night. This is a great example of the media, citizens and law enforcement agencies working in cooperation to take bad folks off the streets.”

The Honorable Wells Turner, II District Judge
On the morning of Tuesday, January 10, 2017, Demetria Dun was transported from the Cullman County Detention Center in shackles to appear before The Honorable Wells Turner, III District Judge.
In a plea agreement reached between Judge Turner and Dunn’s court appointed attorney Joshua O’Neal, Demetria Dunn pleaded GUILTY to 16 separate charges of Negotiating A Worthless Instrument in violation of Alabama Code 13A-9-13.
Judge Turner sentenced her to 12 months in the Cullman County Jail (suspended) placing her on probation for a period of 24 months. She was also required to pay FULL restitution to each of the 16 victims of her crimes as well as the following fees for each charge:
• $30 merchant fees
• $176 Worthless Check Unit Service Charge
• All Court Costs with 85% going for use in law enforcement,
• $21 Solicitors Fee
• $25 Crime Victims Compensation Fee
In the same court appearance, Judge Turner signed an Order of Commitment To Jail. This order imprisons Demetria Dunn to 12 months in the Cullman County Detention Center – effective immediately.

Jeff Roberts
This imprisonment was tied to a similar arrest/charge early in 2016 where Dunn passed a bogus check with Pizza Hut in the amount of $27.08 and received a motion from the court to revoke her probation.
Jeff Roberts, Cullman Assistant District Attorney, weighed in on the Dunn cases after sentencing was handed down:
“Ms. Dunn had previously been arrested and plead guilty to multiple worthless check cases in Cullman County, but continued writing bad checks, not only here, but in several other counties. It has been and will always be the policy of this office to work with someone who makes the mistake of writing bad checks one time. It is also our policy to place people in jail who willfully continue to write bad checks, in order to protect our merchants and citizens from further loss.”
Dunn has charges pending in at least twelve other Counties and/or jurisdictions across north and central Alabama.
It is generally believed that when she finishes her 12-month sentence at the Cullman County Detention Center, law enforcement agencies in those jurisdictions will immediately wish to interview Dunn on those additional warrants/charges with further arrests, sentencing, and imprisonment possible.
Beth Richards, Cullman Worthless Check Unit Coordinator, was pleased with the process that led to Dunn’s arrest and the outcome of her legal process:
“We really appreciate how quickly this story went out into the community and the huge response it generated. The people who shared the article and those who gave tips to law enforcement about locating Ms. Dunn have our gratitude.”

The Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI are seeking the public’s assistance to identify and locate the subjects responsible for the armed robbery of the Rite Aid Pharmacy located at 1315 E. Washington Lane on Sunday, July 10, 2011.
One of the subjects stayed inside the store as employees were closing for the day at 8:00 PM, and after the door was locked he pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun and announced a robbery. He ordered an employee to let two accomplices into the store, had the employee re-lock the door, and then handcuffed all of the employees. The subjects ordered the store manager to open the safe, and then took cash from the safe, along with cigarettes and cigars, before fleeing the pharmacy in an unknown direction. There were no physical injuries to the employees.
The subject who stayed inside and pulled out the gun is described as a black male in his 30’s, 6’2” tall, 250 pounds, wearing a black baseball cap with white lettering and a logo on the front, a black shirt, and tan cargo pants. A second subject is described as a black male in his 20’s, 5’7” tall, 175 pounds, wearing a white t-shirt with a black long-sleeved shirt underneath, long white basketball shorts, brown work boots, and a white plastic mask which he donned once inside the pharmacy. A third subject has already been taken into custody by the Philadelphia Police Department.
Pictures of the two subjects who remain at large are attached to this email. Anyone with information about these subjects is asked to call the Philadelphia Police Department or the FBI at 215-418-4000. These subjects are considered armed and dangerous. There may be a reward for information leading to the capture of these subjects, and tipsters can remain anonymous.
