St. Louis may have the Gateway Arch but Warren, Pennsylvania has two of them! In addition to the mini arch in front of the Chamber of Commerce there is a larger mini arch at the Visitor Center on US 6 on the west side of town. A Roadside America tipster said this arch was the actual model for the St. Louis arch.
Early maps show the Phoenix Hotel dates back to the 1880s. Its original facade was more in line with the architecture of the day but somewhere along the line it was changed to how it looked in the early photo. I'm unsure when this quaint little hotel first came on the scene but it lasted up until the end of 2010 after its owners decided to close its doors on Christmas Eve for the last time after being sold to developers back in August of that year
The hotel became popular with the football and media crowd in the last half of the last century when Collingwood premiership captain, legend and media superstar Lou Richards purchased and managed the hotel after his playing days were over. Sadly, as many Melburnians would now know, Lou Richards passed away last Monday at the ripe old age of 94. As a champion player, exceptional football commentator, TV jester and abysmal tipster, Lou Richards found a fond place in many Victorian hearts. Lou broke into the media in 1955 with a job as an expert comments scribe with the now defunct Argus newspaper, and commentator with radio station 3XY. Working in all three forms of the media, he along with others led the way in turning football into the billion dollar media industry we have today.
Towards the end of the hotel's life, it became the Phoenix Bar. The Phoenix Bar was more of a wine and cocktail establishment than the hotel type atmosphere it was when Lou was managing it. A sports book store was next door at the time. It is now located at 51 Brunswick Road in East Brunswick.
After the hotel was demolished in 2011, a 29 storey apartment tower now stands in its place. Probably the slimmest apartment building in Melbourne with a width of only 6.7 metres, it has a height of just under 90 metres. The building was built by the Grollo company Equiset. With just one apartment per floor, spaces are tight but the views are spectacular, especially looking out across Birrarung Marr Park, the Yarra, the Botanic Gardens, Federation Square, the MCG and the city skyline to the west. Spaces are so tight, in fact, that aside from a tiny public lobby, entry is via lift directly into each apartment. Even fire stairs open directly into each apartment. Parking is via a nine-storey stacker, the tallest in Australia where cars are slotted on and off what amounts to a car hoist and stacked one above the other. A water ballast tank on the roof serves to give the tower stability in high winds.

From "filmsoup-swap" project with Toby Mason (Fotobes). First, he shot an underpass at Vauxhall train station in London. And then he posted the film to Japan and I shot cosmos flowers in a small cosmos garden, Gifu. After shooting a roll I put the dissolved neutral detergent onto all around the film in a darkroom. Then rewind the film and I heated the canister in boiled water for 5 minutes. After I dried the film I got it developed. Came out psychedelic image. The iPhone 14 series, AirPods Pro 2, and three Apple Watches are expected to be unveiled at an upcoming Apple event in September, which is expected to take place on September 13. According to the tip, it is unclear whether the event will be held online or offline, but more information will be available by late August. It is also unknown whether Apple will unveil new Mac devices and iPad tablets at the September event. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing to hold its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) beginning June 6.
Leaks from Informants According to iDrop News, Apple's September event could take place in week 37 of this year, with a September 13 launch date. According to the source, Apple has yet to decide whether the event will be held in person or online. The company will only make this decision close to the event date, and the tipster claims confirmation will be available by mid or late August, as that is when Apple begins recording for the September event if it is online.
The 14-series iPhone
During the September event, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to unveil its iPhone 14 series. The tipster claims that the iPhone 14 will look exactly like the iPhone 13, and that it will use last year's Apple A15 SoC, but slightly modified and renamed Apple A16.
As previously stated, the latest report claims Apple will not release a mini version of the iPhone 14 series. The screen sizes of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are expected to be 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch,

I guess I should be more careful around electronics. Every piece of technology I touch seems to last one-two years tops. I have bad luck with technology. Computers frying, hard drives failing, phones crapping out, VCRs eating up tapes. This time it could have been preventable somewhat.
I somehow managed to drop my iPhone several times a day, and nothing came out of it, maybe once in a while there'd be a ding here or a small scratch there, but the screen of my trusty white iPhone 3G finally cracked back in July. Only days earlier the screen started fading to a white screen where I wasn't able to do anything. It was easily fixable by pressing down on the screen hard.
On Sunday the phone fell off the table, and now it's no longer possible to get past the white screen. I've been saving money for an iPhone 4 for a while, but I was planning on getting one sans contract/unlocked, also, it was going to be the white model. Instead, I decided to call up Rogers and try to do a hardware upgrade to the iPhone 4, no can do. Every Rogers/Futureshop store in all of Brandon (hell make that most of Canada) is SOLD OUT of iPhone 4s. One dealer said he could put me on his waiting list, but there's already 70 people on that.
Seriously, why is it much harder get an iPhone this time around than it was in 2008 when the iPhone 3G launch occured, I understand that it's hard to build an iPhone 4 than an iPhone 3G, but I was able to order an iPhone 3G on launch day over the phone. Now.. not even Rogers call centre can help.
I miss my iPhone 3G, I'm stuck with an HTC TyTn (circa 2006) with Windows Mobile 6, it's not a pleasure to deal with at all. I do like the slide out keyboard, but that's all. I can't wait until I'm able to get something better and move on. The death of the iPhone happens only 2 days after Rogers 3G service is unofficially turned on here in Brandon (ps - I am the tipster).
I'm heading to Futureshop/Walmart/MTS Connect with my girlfriend in an hour, I may get an Android if there's no iPhones in stock but frankly, when I was playing around with iPhone 4 at Apple Store a month ago.. I was in awe. As for my girlfriend, she might be getting a Blackberry.. wow.. her first smartphone! Good for her!
Wish me luck..
Edit (Late evening, same day): Well I was lucky and got an iPhone 4! Futureshop actually had stock available for once, so I renewed my contract then and there. Really wasn't hoping to sign another contract but that's how things roll I suppose.

The hotel is definitely still there, though it's an apartment building now -- I live there. Single room occupancies with the bathrooms down the hall. Just like hotels used to be.

Xiaomi Mi 7 may not be the showstopper at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 as the company is now reported to have no plans of making any major announcements at the forthcoming convention. Apart from rumours around the Mi 7, there were some also speculations towards the Mi Max 3 that are not likely to become a reality at MWC 2018. Instead, the Chinese company is said to be preparing the Mi MIX 2S that could be showcased in Barcelona to grab some eyeballs from the upcoming flagship offerings by Samsung and Sony. While Xiaomi has already secured its place as an exhibitor at this year's MWC, a report by AndroidHeadlines, citing a high-level employee, claimed that there are no plans to make any major announcements at the venue. This hints that the Chinese giant would take the route of HTC and LG, both of which are also not expected to bring their top-end smartphone models to Barcelona. The reason for abandoning the Mi 7 launch at this year's MWC might be to avoid Samsung and its Galaxy S9and Galaxy S9+ that are set to launch ahead of MWC 2018 on February 25. Sony is also in the headlines for reportedly preparing the launch of the Xperia XZ Pro on the same date to rival the new Galaxy family.Nevertheless, if we believe a Weibo tipster, Xiaomi is planning to launch the Mi MIX 2S sometime around the MWC. This would help the company get some global attention as well as play a safe game against the Galaxy S9 series. There aren't any details available about the Mi MIX 2S. However, the Weibo tipster points to the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, which will certainly debut on the Mi 7.Xiaomi last month announced its partnership with Qualcomm for choosing the Snapdragon 845 for the new Mi 7. Also, there are reports that the Xiaomi Mi 7 will come with a 6-inch bezel-less 18:9 OLED display and will feature a 3D face sensing technology similar to Apple's Face ID feature that was launched with the iPhone X last year. Xiaomi last month announced its partnership with Qualcomm for opting the Snapdragon 845 on the new Mi 7.

Passed by fellow TIPSter Manong Michael's studio and he remembered that he has a manual focus Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 (sample photo at f/1.4 on top right). He tried it on his new Nikon D90 and now we're both enjoying these old manual focus lenses! (bottom photo shot with Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens)

A Thank You should also go to the Tipster who told me that this Rail Replacement will be happening for 3 nights this week and that something different would be on it, and this was the best I could do in the dark, but still not that bad considering the conditions I had to work with, and besides I've actually done worse night shots right?
But yes I'm sure you still think I'm crazy for going out at 00:45AM, especially when John Lee Hooker sang that "Night Time is the Right Time to be with the Woman You Love!", however unfortunately I still don't have any of that...

Chocolate Sauce Creates Incredible Video Game and Anime Art
You think drawing your favorite with paper and pencil is difficult? Trying drawing them with chocolate sauce on plates.
In Seoul, there's an anime, comic book, and video game shop called Saboten Store. As tipster Sang points out, the staff do cosplay and dress as maids, but this isn't exactly a maid cafe per se.
It's an amazing syrup art cafe is what it is.
Saboten, which means "cactus" in Japanese, opened early last year and was founded by a gentleman named Kyung Chul Han, who used to work as a video game journalist and as a game developer at NCsoft.
During summer 2013 and later that fall, people on Twitter in South Korea began posting photos of amazing edible art the shop's cafe churned out.
With their orders of toast or cake, patrons can shell out extra for "shirup ahteu" (시럽아트) or "syrup art," drawn in chocolate and strawberry sauce—among other sweet, colorful sauces.
The syrup art is custom—you can apparently request the characters you want! The variation in the syrup art is incredible. There are different styles and totally different characters.

A planning application has been submitted to erect two bungalows at the bottom of Sun Yard at the southern end of town (S/2014/1947/FUL).It is probably a part of the town that not many new residents know exists. and even residents who have been here some years will have missed. The two bungalows are to be situated on the right of the photograph, one in a walled garden and the other in a paddock behind it where a static caravan is located. It is an area with a fair amount of history. The walled garden used to go with the Sun Inn (now the Monk & Tipster) and could be where the 19th century skittle and quoit alleys were located.
In front of the wall on the left and the walled garden used to be a narrow mill leat which supplied a bark mill slightly further downstream on the right. The leat got covered over after 1855 as it was unhygienic! The building on the left is converted out of the former brick Independent Chapel that was erected in 1785 and ceased when the new chapel was opened in Meeting Yard in 1845. In the 1900's this was the one of the sites in South Northamptonshire where Fosset's circus overwintered some of its animals etc. I visited the old chapel some years ago and it still had a crude trapeze hung from the roof truss where the performers used to practice. It also housed the pool where the sea-lions were trained. There is a tradition that whilst the circus was here that one of the elephants died and was buried in the paddock but a similar story is told for another Fosset's site in nearby Tiffield.

"N.Y. Post Office Pneumatic Tube" c. 1912. G.G. Bain Collection.
New York Pneumatic Mail System
Submitted by Anonymous Tipster on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 3:59pm.
A brief history of the pneumatic system in New York.
(Robin Pogrebin, NY Times, May 7, 2001)
In the bowels of New York City a century ago, not only was there the whoosh of water through pipes and the whiz of subways through tunnels, there was the zip of mail moving through pneumatic tubes at about 30 miles per hour.
The tubes -- others snaked under Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and St. Louis -- were put into use by the United States Post Office in 1897. In Manhattan, they extended about 27 miles, from the old Custom House in Battery Park to Harlem and back through Times Square, Grand Central Terminal and the main post office near Pennsylvania Station. At the City Hall station, the mail went over the Brooklyn Bridge to the general post office in Brooklyn.
In describing the system's effectiveness during a snowstorm, a 1914 congressional report of the Pneumatic Tube Postal Commission said: "New York Streets were almost impassable -- New York business houses nevertheless received their important mail on time! The pneumatic tubes carried the mails."
For the time, the system was thoroughly modern, even high-tech, a subterranean network for priority and first-class mail powered by pressurized air. Only a few decades later it was mostly a dinosaur, made obsolete by the motor wagon and then the automobile.
The pneumatic tubes were introduced by the post office to deliver mail in large urban areas. The system used pressurized air to move a mail canister through an underground eight-inch cast-iron pipe.
" 'Mail shot from guns' may be an apt description," said Post Haste, an internal newsletter of the post office in 1950, adding that the metal carriers resembled heavy artillery shells.
"Unaware that this network exists," the newsletter said, "the ordinary citizen of New York nevertheless benefits from the rapid transmission of his more important mail through these subterranean channels."
The newsletter also explained that the tubes were lubricated to facilitate the passage of the containers by sending perforated steel cylinders filled with oil through the channels.
"I still remember those canisters popping out of the tube," said Nathan Halpern, a veteran postal worker, in an internal newsletter. "They were spaced one every minute or so, and when they came out, they were a little warm with a slight slick of oil."
At its greatest expansion, there were more than 56 miles of mail tubes on the East Coast delivering as many as 200,000 letters per tube every hour. (Legend has it that a live cat was sent through as a test in 1896.) Western Union also used pneumatic tubes, linking its main telegraph office to some of the exchanges.
When the system was first installed, pneumatic transport was considerably faster than horse-drawn wagon, then the most common vehicle for mail delivery. In New York City, two pipes were used along each route, one for sending, the other for receiving. The pipes were buried 4 to 12 feet underground, though in some places the tubes were placed within subway tunnels, parallel to the 4, 5 and 6 lines.
Each two-foot-long mail canister had felt and leather packing on each end to create an airtight seal, as well as four small wheels, which helped prevent the canister from becoming lodged at a junction in the pipes. (Records from the early 1930's indicate that there had been at least three incidents of malfunction.)
Each container was labeled to indicate the destination of its contents. Special delivery letters were delivered within one hour; regular letters within three.
About $4 million was spent on the construction in New York City. The original contractor was the Tubular Dispatch Company, which built the original pneumatic prototype for Philadelphia in 1893.
Construction of the tubes began in the late 1890's and they were in operation by 1898. Before the end of the original 10-year contract, the pneumatic service was taken over by the American Pneumatic Service Company, which later became the New York Mail & Newspaper Transportation Company.
Charles Emory Smith, the former postmaster general, predicted in The Brooklyn Eagle in 1900 that one day every household would be linked to every other by means of pneumatic tubes. Around the turn of the century, there were even several proposals to build a system between North America and Europe.
The service continued in most cities until 1918, when the high costs of maintenance -- $17,000 per mile per year -- were thought to be impractical for the small volume of mail transported. When a post office moved, for example, the streets had to be dug up to reroute the tubes. And the pneumatic service began to pale next to the new technology of the motor-wagon, which could deliver mail two to three times faster than a horse-drawn cart with equal or greater volume and more than 10 times the volume of a pneumatic tube, while only slightly slower.
Subsequent improvements in the speed of the motor-wagon and its successor, the automobile, signaled the end of the pneumatic tube. In New York City, because of the high population density and a great amount of lobbying from contractors, the tube system remained in operation until Dec. 1, 1953, when it was suspended pending a review. Later that month, the post office ended the contract. The New York Mail Company, the owner of the pipes, made several attempts to sell the defunct system -- offering it to Con Edison and the United Parcel Service -- with no success.
#iPhone7, #iPhone7Plus Photo Leaks Reveal Camera Design Changes
HIGHLIGHTS
* Leaked photos show protective camera ring on iPhone 7
* Camera sensor is larger than the predecessor
* iPhone 7 Plus to sport a dual camera setup at the back
Apple's upcoming #iPhone 7 has been the victim of many leaks, and the flow seems never to abate. The latest photos reveal some interesting details about the cameras on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The photos also provide conflicting evidence for the inclusion of the 3.5mm audio jack, making the mystery murkier.

The photos from noted tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer show the back and the bottom portion of the iPhone 7. The back reveals a bump in the camera casing, revealing that the camera shall continue to protrude, but will come with a protective ring surrounding it.
The camera hole is also a bit larger than its predecessor, and is placed near to the edge of the smartphone hinting at some changes in the camera hardware. It is rumoured that the iPhone 7 will come with a larger CMOS sensor, and these changes are a result of that upgrade.

The photos also show the bottom of the device, revealing the absence of the 3.5mm audio jack. With more free space, there are two speaker grilles alongside the Lightning port. A separate iPhone 7 Plus image reveals the dual camera setup at the back, something that has been rumoured on several occasions previously. On the iPhone 7 Plus, both the rear cameras are aligned horizontally right next to each other followed by the flash sitting beside it.
It is surrounded by the same protective casing ring seen on the iPhone 7. In the current versions, the camera protrudes out of the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, but without any protective ring for safety. Additionally, all the photos also attest to the antenna bands rumour, showing them placed on the edges of the smartphones.

While Hemmerstoffer's leaks point to the absence of the 3.5mm audio jack, a separate leak from Weibo tells a different story. One more back casing photo was leaked on the social site, testifying to the larger camera on the back of the iPhone 7. However, in the post, the user postulates that the 3.5mm audio jack will not be removed from this year's release.

In any case, we recommend that you take all of these leaks with a pinch of salt until the official announcement expected in September. The next iteration is expected to see minimal design changes with few but crucial upgrades. Apple is expected to unveil its upcoming offering in three variants - iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 7 Pro.
