I went down to Honeymoon Bay with the idea of working that curve of sand into something a bit more intentional. It’s one of those locations where everything looks promising at first, but actually getting the elements to line up takes a bit more patience than you expect.
This was a single exposure using a 3 stop ND filter. Just enough to slow the water down without turning it into a featureless blur. I’ve tried longer exposures here before, but it tends to lose that sense of movement. This time I wanted to keep a bit of structure in the flow as the water pulled back.
The tricky part was timing it.
There’s a short window as each wave recedes where the water stretches cleanly across the sand and creates those soft leading lines. Too early and it looks chaotic. Too late and everything just flattens out. So it turned into a bit of a waiting game. Watch the set come in, let it pass, then hope the next one behaves slightly better.
Most didn’t.

Lost to time (mostly to music rights) mid-period Roeg film detailing the l'amour fou of a professor (Art Garfunkel) and a young headstrong Army brat (Theresa Russell, very brave at 22). Roeg cuts it all up memory-style, where one event brings up the memory of something else, eventually giving us the whole story and its creepy, brutal ending. Very enjoyable and almost a sister-movie to Zulawski's "Possession", with similar craziness and a similar back-drop. Roeg treats his audience like adults, and lets us all put it together.
Once again, I found myself talking to a bird a few thousand feet in the sky.
you know, "OK....a little higher, more to the right...perfect....oh poop, did not quite get it." But close.

From an old notebook my grandfather gave me. This came from a series of magazine articles by William S. Bennett in the 1960s.
I was concentrating so hard to keep the camera stead - tripod was back at base camp - that their impending-arrival wasn't even noticed until they got into the frame!

The AVCHD is much better but Flickr doesn't support that format (yet?).
What odd timing is this alley find. An Arctic airmass assaults my home state this weekend—and what a shocking contrast to San Diego. As such, my wife and I watch weather forecasts more than typical. This afternoon, when our high temperature reached 19.4 degrees Celsius (67 Fahrenheit), the Caribou, Maine weather station reported -28.9 C (-20 F) with windchill of -43.9 C (-47 F).
On the Fahrenheit scale, that’s a difference of 80 degrees air temp and 100 degrees when considering windchill. The difference is as pronounced this evening. In San Diego, it’s 10 C (50 F). Caribou: -31 C (-24 F) with windchill of -46.7 C (-52 F). Brrr.
Apparently Aroostook County pretty much closed down today. “At least 27 Maine districts are closing today because of the extreme cold sweeping across the state”, according to Bangor Daily News. “Schools are closing as far south as Portland, but most of the closures are concentrated in Aroostook County”.
I remember getting on the school bus at -40 (where both temp scales are same number). So the closures today are not typical. Mainers are tough and accustomed to cold and snow. That said, this Arctic blast isn’t typical, with duration and intensity of chill factor causing concern and caution.
Perfect timing with my arbitrary definitions of seasons, we got 2 feet of snow on December 1st. I will also include the aftermath in this album, cleaning up on December 2nd, and roof raking later in the week. Strangely, we have not had anything near this bad again as of February 16th. We had a few storms of a few inches, which is fine with me - the perfect amount for skiing. Lately though it's been only ice storms - a bit of snow, then a lot of sleet and freezing rain, then rain which waterlogs it, then back to snow and it all freezes. It has been horrible to clean that up, sometimes several times a week, so at this point I hope the groundhog is right.
Side note - Part of my New Year's Resolution was to catch up on Flickr. I am doing that, but it takes a long time. I have set an unrealistic goal to finish the winter album by March 1st. I haven't started it yet.

The timing advance brought many Nissan Frontiers together. (I was not there but my husband took these pictures)!
Not quite into sports photography yet then!! I laughed so hard when I saw this shot...not quite what I'd intended!
It's time to tackle the timing chain and power steering rack. The timing chain would loosen up as the engine warms. As it loosened, it would clack against the engine block producing a very unsettling sound. The power steering rack wouldn't hold fluid so I ran it dry with manual steering. Still not too difficult. I had three repair manuals and not a clue what I was doing getting this deep into this car.
