Diplodocus sp. - right leg from a sauropod dinosaur in the Jurassic of Utah, USA. (DNM 4053 to DNM 4064, Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, USA)
Sauropod dinosaurs were the largest terrestrial animals ever. They all have the same basic body plan: large body with four walking legs, very long neck & tail, and a small head relative to body size. Sauropods were herbivores, and are often perceived as holding their heads & necks up high to reach vegetation normally out of reach to other organisms. Modern reconstructions of many sauropod species depict them with heads and necks held close to the horizontal, or at low angles above the horizontal.
This is a complete right back leg from a Diplodocus sauropod. From left to right are the femur, tibia, fibula, and foot bones.

The mid tibiae only have a single anterodorsal bristle (species like rudis, pediculata, labialis and viatica have 2-3).

I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.
Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.
I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

Aphonopelma eutylenum, CALIFORNIA EBONY TARANTULA? It is supposed to be the only tarantula species found in this part of CA. Males have small abdomens, bulb-like palp tips, and hooks on the first tibia. They are active this time of year. Sulfur Creek, Joseph D. Grant Ranch County Park, Santa Clara County, California, USA.

Length of tibia, primary projection, rather drab plumage, shape of supercillium brooding behind the eye and bill shape and size all helped to separate this species from the similar Pacific Golden-Plover. Arroyo Laguna, San Simeon, CA

The Arroyo toad is officially endangered, on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because of habitat destruction. Watersheds, river habitats, and wetlands in southern California have been dammed and polluted by siltation from development and other activities. The arroyo toad has lost more than 75% of its habitat in southern California.
A couple of these delightful creatures hopped through our campsite during the night.

I only fell about ten feet but my tibia landed on the edge of a ladder rung and broke my tibia. I didn't know then all the trouble I was heading into. After the paramedics got there, my brother had nothing to do and his restless energy got the best or him. He knew if the situation were reversed that I would be taking pictures so he obliged and took a few. Be glad he took no real close up shots of my leg, arm and face.
