crosstable R->L portable xray of my right tibia, revealing a significant tibial plateau fracture. Initial treatment involved stabilization with an external fixator on HD#2, then placement of a circumferential external fixator on post-injury day 10. Other pictures and x-rays available elsewhere in this set.
Helophilus Pendulus, size, - 12mm
This hoverfly has a black stripe down its face and the basal half of the hind tibia is brownish yellow, April - October in many open habitats, also called the Sun Fly as it likes to bask, favours damp habitats.
The larvae inhabit rotting matter such as liquid manure,
Hover flies are the most easily recognizable of the flies due to their often wasp-like or bee-like appearance and their ability to hover.
These superb aerial acrobats can move in all directions, including backwards, and can hold a fixed position in the air even in gusty conditions.
The adults are typically slender-bodied with black and yellow or white stripes; some are stout and hairt.
The eyes are large and in males meet on top of the head.
The wings have a characteristic false vein running down the middle ( a simple thickening of the wing membrane ) and a false margin at the edge ( the joining together of the outer wing veins ).
Despite the warning, wasp-like markings, and the bee-like appearance of many species, hover flies are harmless nectar feeders.
The larvae of a few species can be pests of cultivated bulbs.

I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.

♀ flying and stopping on a sandy soil, 4.xi.2019. Body length: 14.0 mm. Forewing length: 9.9 mm. HEAD: Internal border of eyes not emarginated and without a pale line. Seen laterally, face flat, and clypeus slightly arched forward. Clypeus subrectangular, more than twice as wide as long, with apical edge straight (without apical rim). Clypeus surface bald, finely and densely punctate and sparsely puncticulate with more large punctures. MESOSOMA: Seen laterally, pronotum squared in front, with abruptly vertical anterior face; propodeum strongly sloping posteriorly. Seen dorsally, sloping part of the propodeum without indentation or lateral tooth. Propodeum strigate or very finely wrinkled (=“cross-waved”?)(!) and matt. WINGS: Forewing with three submarginal cells. Wing with a distinct pocket at the base of the 2nd discoidal cell (vein CuA1 deflected posteriorly forming a distinct 'pocket'). 1st cubital vein more or less vertical. Wing membrane brown tinged. LEGS: Tarsal claws regularly curved; claws with a teeth in the middle. Pulvillus strong or well developed. Fore basitarsus without tarsal comb, but with three small lateral spines. 2nd fore tarsus short, as wide as long. Spines at apex of hind tibia splayed outwards, irregularly spaced, of differing lengths. METASOMA: Second sternite without a transverse groove. Last sternite laterally compressed. Last tergite lacking a brush of strong bristles. 2nd tergite with two reddish spots (!). REMARKS. Determination following Durand 2013 to genus level, Wolf 1975 to subgenus level; Berland 1925 and Wolf 1972 to species level. The characters marked with an exclamation (!) are the ones that deviate from the characters followed on the keys.

The pollen basket or corbicula is part of the tibia on the hind legs of the four related lineages of apid bees that used to compose the family Apidae: the honey bees, bumblebees, stingless bees, and orchid bees.The corbicula ("little basket") is a polished cavity surrounded by a fringe of hairs, into which the pollen is placed; most other bees possess a structure called the scopa, which is similar in function, but is a dense mass of branched hairs into which pollen is pressed, with pollen grains held in place in the narrow spaces between the hairs. A honey bee moistens the forelegs with a protruding tongue and brushes the pollen that has collected on head, body and forward appendages to the hind legs. The pollen is transferred to the pollen comb on the hind legs and then combed, pressed, compacted, and transferred to the corbicula on the outside surface of the tibia of the hind legs. A single hair functions as a pin that secures the middle of the pollen load. Honey and/or nectar is used to moisten the dry pollen, producing the product known as bee pollen or bee bread. The mixing of the pollen with nectar or honey changes the color of the pollen. The color of the pollen can identify the pollen source.

I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.
Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.
I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

A la pobre Cecilia se le ha roto la tibia y el peroné. Ahora mismo tiene la patita inmovilizada mediante un ingenioso invento (hecho por mi veterinaria) que consiste en coger una jeringuilla y cortarlo para conseguir un medio tubo con forma de U y meterle la parte de la pata a inmovilizar dentro (protegido) y ponerle esta especie de venda azul. Además ha tenido (ya lo tenemos casi curado del todo) una úlcera en un ojo. Es una pupas la pobrecilla. Está separada de los otros 2.
Poor Cecilia has a broken leg. For the moment she has to have it inmobilized and maybe in a week she will be wearing a plastercast. She also had a problem with her left eye. Right now we have separated her from the other two. Don't feel sad for her, you have to see her RUN when she is outside so I can clean the cage....

Lauren broke her leg at Corona Del Mar on July 27. At least she was able to enjoy most of the vacation before the break.
Palomar, CA
Situated along the Palomar mountain range of Southern California, is Agua Tibia Wilderness. I came here to photograph the native wildlife and learn as much about their shrinking habitat as possible. Minutes from Temecula, this wilderness provides critical refuge for many of the area's native plants and animals; including the Horned Lizard.
This trailhead starts at the end of Dripping Springs campground, just past a creekbed. You pass through a grove of Oak trees before an expanse of chaparral dominated by Red Shanks. During Summer these plants burst with white flowers. This can be a strenuous hike, especially if you go during Summer, so make sure to bring plenty of water. An adventure pass ($5) is required to park at the campgrounds.
