I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.

Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.

I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

Ctenoplectra, Unknown Blue-tailed Oil Mopping Bee, collected in Thailand by the Thailand Inventory Group for Entomological Research

Another Oil Mopping Bee, this an Asian one from Thailand rather than from Africa . Here is a good shot of the large scraper or comb this female has on her hind tibia. This comb is used after visiting flowers to remove floral oils that collect in specialized hairs located on the underside of the bee’s abdomen. In addition to the unusual oil-collecting modifications, this genus has been difficult to classify because of its tongue . As we have seen, bees can be broadly classified into Long- and Short-Tongued families based upon details of the structure of the mouthparts (not simply how long they are). Ctenoplectra has the short-tongued morphology, but has other characteristics that seem to suggest that it is actually more closely related to Long-tongued bees. So different is this genus from all other bees in the world that at one point it was placed in its own family. However, detailed study of morphology and molecules revealed its true affinities and the genus was moved into the family Apidae which contains many other genera of bees.

This hoverfly has a black stripe down its face and the basal half of the hind tibia is brownish yellow, April - October in many open habitats, also called the Sun Fly as it likes to bask, favours damp habitats.

The larvae inhabit rotting matter such as liquid manure,

Hover flies are the most easily recognizable of the flies due to their often wasp-like or bee-like appearance and their ability to hover.

These superb aerial acrobats can move in all directions, including backwards, and can hold a fixed position in the air even in gusty conditions.

The adults are typically slender-bodied with black and yellow or white stripes; some are stout and hairt.

The eyes are large and in males meet on top of the head.

The wings have a characteristic false vein running down the middle ( a simple thickening of the wing membrane ) and a false margin at the edge ( the joining together of the outer wing veins ).

Despite the warning, wasp-like markings, and the bee-like appearance of many species, hover flies are harmless nectar feeders.

The larvae of a few species can be pests of cultivated bulbs.

Acanthocephala or Leaf footed Bugs are distinctive, nearly inch-long stately insects in the Coreidae family. Leaf footed bugs are named for the leaf-like expansions of the hind tibia and femora. They have four-segmented antennae, large compound eyes and one pair of ocelli, or simple eyes. The Latin name Acanthocephala means “spiny head.”

All species of Coreidae are plant-feeders. Some Coreids live in leaf litter, but most nymphs and adults live above ground on their host plants where they may feed on seeds, fruits, stems or leaves. Many occur on an astonishing variety of plants, while some are restricted to a single host, such as the squash bug, known for its destructive feeding on cucurbitaceae.

These insects have a distinctive proboscis, a “hypodermic-like” beak. “Like all true bugs, the adults are equipped with a beak, or rostrum, a hypodermic needle-like device carried under the head, which it uses to pierce the plant tissue and suck out liquids. They do not simply "suck out sap" they inject a tissue-dissolving saliva and vacuum out the resulting slurry. Bugs cannot ingest solid food, and widespread damage to the plant is a result of these liquefying enzymes.

Pictures of my broken leg and healing progression from a ski accident in Beaver Creek, CO.

I was skiing down a black and fell on ice... My right ski did not detach from the boot and as I rolled down the mountain, my tibia and fibula fractured since the lower part of my leg was staying in place while my upper body was rolling.

Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.

I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

The Tibia Obliqua (or Plagiaulos) is a transverse flute popular in Ancient Rome and Greece. They could be made of bone, ivory or wood (sometimes with an outer casing of bronze).

These instruments are Roman and from the 1st or 2nd century and restored from fragments (perhaps incorrectly). They appear to be made of wood covered with bronze (traces of the wooden lining exist on both pipes). One has five fingerholes and the other five and a thumbhole. The mouthpieces, decorated with the head of a maenad, has a lateral hole bored obliquely into the main tube. This was probably intended for the reception of a reed.

Oblique Tibias are assigned the number 421.121.12 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:

4 = Aerophones. Sound is primarily produced by vibrating air. The instrument itself does not vibrate, and there are no vibrating strings or membranes.

42 = Non-Free Aerophones. The vibrating air is contained within the instrument.

421 = Edge-Blown Flutes. A narrow stream of air is directed against an edge.

421.1 = Flutes without a Duct. The player makes a ribbon-shaped flow of air with his lips.

421.12 = Side-Blown Flutes. The player blows against the sharp rim of a hole in the side of the tube.

421.121 = Single Side-Blown Flutes.

421.121.1 = Open Side-Blown Flutes.

Hallelujah! Bombus ruderarius recorded in Shropshire at last. We put this queen in a tube to photograph the distinctive orangey hairs on the hind tibia - the determining feature for this very uncommon species. Found and released back into the Shropshire/Staffordshire border country around Hill End, north of Claverley - along a road that actually forms the county boundaries.
