A couple more shots of Andrena asteris, one male, and one female. Note the super fluffy hairs on the hind tibia of the female. Nearly all of the fall Andrena have this fluffiness, perhaps because many of them are specialists on Asteraceae which maybe needsfluffy pollen collecting hairs in order to transport pollen well … Or maybe not

Initial treatment involved stabilization with an external fixator on HD#2, then placement of a circumferential external fixator on post-injury day 10. Helophilus Pendulus, size, - 12mm

This hoverfly has a black stripe down its face and the basal half of the hind tibia is brownish yellow, April - October in many open habitats, also called the Sun Fly as it likes to bask, favours damp habitats.

The larvae inhabit rotting matter such as liquid manure,

Hover flies are the most easily recognizable of the flies due to their often wasp-like or bee-like appearance and their ability to hover.

These superb aerial acrobats can move in all directions, including backwards, and can hold a fixed position in the air even in gusty conditions.

The adults are typically slender-bodied with black and yellow or white stripes; some are stout and hairt.

The eyes are large and in males meet on top of the head.

The wings have a characteristic false vein running down the middle ( a simple thickening of the wing membrane ) and a false margin at the edge ( the joining together of the outer wing veins ).

Despite the warning, wasp-like markings, and the bee-like appearance of many species, hover flies are harmless nectar feeders.

The larvae of a few species can be pests of cultivated bulbs.

Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.

I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.

I went down to see if the coast was clear, it wasn't.

The pollen basket or corbicula is part of the tibia on the hind legs of the four related lineages of apid bees that used to compose the family Apidae: the honey bees, bumblebees, stingless bees, and orchid bees.The corbicula ("little basket") is a polished cavity surrounded by a fringe of hairs, into which the pollen is placed; most other bees possess a structure called the scopa, which is similar in function, but is a dense mass of branched hairs into which pollen is pressed, with pollen grains held in place in the narrow spaces between the hairs. A honey bee moistens the forelegs with a protruding tongue and brushes the pollen that has collected on head, body and forward appendages to the hind legs. The pollen is transferred to the pollen comb on the hind legs and then combed, pressed, compacted, and transferred to the corbicula on the outside surface of the tibia of the hind legs. A single hair functions as a pin that secures the middle of the pollen load. Honey and/or nectar is used to moisten the dry pollen, producing the product known as bee pollen or bee bread. The mixing of the pollen with nectar or honey changes the color of the pollen. The color of the pollen can identify the pollen source.

A la pobre Cecilia se le ha roto la tibia y el peroné. Ahora mismo tiene la patita inmovilizada mediante un ingenioso invento (hecho por mi veterinaria) que consiste en coger una jeringuilla y cortarlo para conseguir un medio tubo con forma de U y meterle la parte de la pata a inmovilizar dentro (protegido) y ponerle esta especie de venda azul. Además ha tenido (ya lo tenemos casi curado del todo) una úlcera en un ojo. Es una pupas la pobrecilla. Está separada de los otros 2.

Poor Cecilia has a broken leg. For the moment she has to have it inmobilized and maybe in a week she will be wearing a plastercast. She also had a problem with her left eye. Right now we have separated her from the other two. Don't feel sad for her, you have to see her RUN when she is outside so I can clean the cage....

Both bones were compound (exposed outside the skin) fracture.

I was taken down the mountain by ski patrol and ambulanced to Vail Hospital.
