Helophilus Pendulus, size, - 12mm
This hoverfly has a black stripe down its face and the basal half of the hind tibia is brownish yellow, April - October in many open habitats, also called the Sun Fly as it likes to bask, favours damp habitats.
The larvae inhabit rotting matter such as liquid manure,
Hover flies are the most easily recognizable of the flies due to their often wasp-like or bee-like appearance and their ability to hover.
These superb aerial acrobats can move in all directions, including backwards, and can hold a fixed position in the air even in gusty conditions.
The adults are typically slender-bodied with black and yellow or white stripes; some are stout and hairt.
The eyes are large and in males meet on top of the head.
The wings have a characteristic false vein running down the middle ( a simple thickening of the wing membrane ) and a false margin at the edge ( the joining together of the outer wing veins ).
Despite the warning, wasp-like markings, and the bee-like appearance of many species, hover flies are harmless nectar feeders.
The larvae of a few species can be pests of cultivated bulbs.

Today I walked on two good legs for the first time since I broke my left tibia. I got cleared for 'weight-bearing status' on Tuesday and today I walked. Not far, true, and a bit wobbly, but I walked on two legs like a (relatively) normal person. I am a biped again, and I can't begin to express how good it feels.
It's quite odd to have to learn to walk all over again; it felt like I had forgotten how, but it came back quickly once I got past the fear of putting weight on the broken leg. The leg will be tired and sore for a while since it hasn't been getting used, but it seems that I am quite strong on it due to all the leg exercises I've been doing, so that's good.
I pulled out the camera when I got home and walked over to this bit of wheat in a jar on my bookshelf. It's a silly rather meaningless picture just by itself, but I walked over to take it, and so I'm posting it for myself. Walking is a wondrous thing, really.

Eusthenopteron, Kingdom – Animalia, Phylum – Chordata, Class – Sarcopterygii, Order - Tetrapodomorpha, Family – Tristichopteridae, Prehistoric sarcopterygian (lobe-finned fishes). Relationships to tetrapods. Shares many unique features in common with the earliest known tetrapods. Similar pattern of skull rooting bones with forms such as Ichthyostega and Acanthostega. Eusthenopteron, like other tetrapodomorph fishes. Internal nostrils, (or a choana) found only in land animals and sarcopterygians. Labyrinthodont teeth, characterized by infolded enamel, which characterizes all of the earliest known tetrapods Like other basal sarcopterygians, Eusthenopteron possessed a two-part cranium, which hinged at mid-length along an intracranial joint. 6/23/2019 - Vladimir Sukhoparov 58, of Cincinnati Ohio goes missing while swimming offshore Wailua beach, Kauai. East swell was minimal and waters were calm but very murky due to several days of rain. A helicopter searched exhaustively for 3-days before search was called off. The guy looked fit for his age. No mention of shark in news, but c'mon, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize what likely occurred.
7/23/19 - Fathi Twalib 34, Queens Pond area of Polihale beach Kauai. Entered ocean at 7:30 P.M. and disappeared after ducking under a small wave near shore. Next morning a very large tiger shark was filmed by drone swimming just 30 yards offshore beach in line with missing man's truck.
10/4/2019 - Alan Delatorre 45, Kailua-Kona, failed to return from a night spear fishing venture. Hawaiʻi Fire Department divers recovered clothes and diving equipment in the waters near the buoy that were identified as belonging to Delatorre. They indicated the damage to the clothing to be attributed to sharks.
7/31/2020 - William "Scott" Stanga, 52, of Hana, Maui disappeared while spearfishing alone at Ku'au Bay beach below Mama's Fish House in Paia during the late afternoon.
12/8/2020 - surfer Robin Warren 56, Honolua Bay, Maui. 17-inch wide bite taken out of surfboard also made severe wound to his left side buttock and upper thigh. Victim was listed as stable after surgery but died the next day.*
6/20/2021 - Nelson Kupenes, 47, disappeared while spearfishing alone during the late afternoon / evening at Glass beach near 'Ele'ele, Kauai. KFD rescue divers recovered his dive float, weight belt, and two spear guns just 25-30 yards offshore. I heard that some body parts were also recovered but that was not in the news reports.
9/14/2021 - 67 year old woman from California disappeared while snorkeling on a dive tour at Molokini Islet offshore of south Maui. The conditions were choppy but she vanished without anyone seeing what happened. All the tour boats present searched for her as did the Coast Guard.
12/14/2021 - Tourist man from Wisconsin age 62, last seen swimming off south point at Chang's Beach fronting Makena Surf Resort. Rescue divers had to quickly exit search area when a large tiger shark appeared. The swimmer's dive mask, snorkel, and one swim fin were subsequently found.
3/7/2022 - Huy Nguyen, 44, disappeared at dusk (7 PM) at Rock Quarry Beach in Kilauea, Kauai. The U.S. Coast Guard said Nguyen had been surfing before handing off his board to his son, saying he was going to swim to shore. A dead humpback whale had washed into the shallow reef area just off the beach prior (Dec. 2021) at the surf spot Pila'a which is just a half mile from Rock Quarry. An oil slick has been visible from atop Pila'a cliff ever since.
12/8/2022 - Kristine Allen from Bellingham, Washington State, 60, was snorkeling 50-75 yards offshore Keawakapu beach in Kihei with her husband Blake when they encountered a large tiger shark. Reportedly he fought off the shark as it made several passes. He managed to swim ashore but his wife vanished during the incident and was never seen again. Her mask & snorkel were recovered where she was last seen. One report mentioned that a piece of her blue bathing suit washed ashore. A 10-12 foot tiger shark was observed in the same area the following morning. *
12/30/2023 - Jason Carter age 39 of Haiku, Maui died of injuries sustained in a shark attack while surfing at Pa'ia Bay on the north-east side of the island. *
06/23/2024 - Tamayo Perry, renown Pipeline surfer and C&C Honolulu Lifeguard is killed likely by a tiger shark while surfing at Goat Island, Malaekahana on Oahu's east side. He sustained multiple bites and lost an arm and a leg. *
9/23/2025 - Bryson Higashi, 44, last seen solo spearfishing at Waikoko's in Hanalei Bay. Shredded camouflage blue diver wetsuit material discovered washed ashore a couple days after.
1/28/2026 - Matthew Kaimana Packard-Asai, 19, of Kapaa - swept into the ocean while shore fishing along rocky coastline at Kahili beach / Rock Quarry in Kilauea. Female companion was also swept into the ocean and suffered a laceration to her leg. She was rescued shortly thereafter but Matthew Kaimana Packard-Asai disappeared from view. On Saturday January 31, 2026 his shark devoured remains were found in the vicinity.
These 41 fatalities may not have had the multiple eye-witnesses that the eight "expert-confirmed" attacks did, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what a shark chewed and regurgitated wetsuit or surf shorts implies. Nor does drowning in a tiger shark's jaws as it takes a victim underwater invalidate the fact that death and subsequent consumption was due to a shark attack (ie. Anthony Moore at Makena, Maui 2006). Likewise, does anyone really think Bryan Adona (whose body was never found) died from some other cause when a large tiger shark was seen within a few yards of where he was when he went missing and a huge shark bite taken out of his body-board was subsequently discovered?

Die Nominatform Plebejus idas idas hat eine Vorderflügellänge von 14 bis 16 Millimeter. Die Oberseite der Männchen ist kräftig metallisch blau glänzend. Am Flügelrand verläuft ein schwarzes Band, das am Hinterflügelaußenrand manchmal eine Reihe schwarzer Flecke bildet.
Die Oberseite der Weibchen ist dunkelbraun und manchmal blau von der Basis bestäubt. Am Flügelaußenrand, besonders auf den Hinterflügeln, seltener auf den Vorderflügeln, ist ein oranges Band wie auf der Flügelunterseite nur ohne schwarze Flecke zu sehen.
Die Flügelunterseiten beider Geschlechter sind hell (Männchen hellgrau, Weibchen hellbraun) mit weißrandigen schwarzen Flecken. In der Submarginalregion verläuft ein gewelltes oranges Band das schwarze Flecke umgibt. Diese Flecke haben auf den Hinterflügeln blaumetallisch glänzende Schuppen.
Die Form P. idas f. opulentus ist unterseits kontrastreich gezeichnet und größer als die Nominatform, während f. haefelfingeri kleiner als die Nominatform ist und ihre Männchen oberseits intensiver blau gefärbt sind. Die zu haefelfingeri ähnliche kleine Form lapponicus hat Weibchen, deren braune Oberseiten oft blau bestäubt und deren orangen Flecken auf den Hinterflügel verkümmert sind.
Der Idas-Bläuling kann mit anderen Silberfleck-Bläulingen leicht verwechselt werden. Für die sichere Unterscheidung dieser Arten ist oft eine Genitaluntersuchung notwendig. Die schwarze Umrandung der Vorderflügel ist bei den Männchen meist schmaler als beim G.eißklee-B.läuling (P.lebejus a.rgus). Auch fehlt dem Idas-Bläuling der kurze Dorn an der Tibia der Vorderbeine, den der G.eißklee-B.läuling besitzt.

Merkmale der Unterarten

P. idas magnagraeca hat große Falter, die Männchen sind manchmal purpurfarben getönt mit schwarzen Adern und relativ breitem schwarzen Rand (2-3 mm). Die orangen Flecke auf den Hinterflügeln der Weibchen sind gut entwickelt, manchmal auch auf den Vorderflügeln. Die Zeichnung der Unterseite ist kräftig.
P. idas nevadensis hat zu magnagraeca ähnliche, aber durchschnittlich kleinere Falter.
Bei P. idas bellieri variiert der schwarze Rand bei den Männchen auf Korsika zwischen einem und zwei Millimetern und auf Sardinien zwischen zwei und drei Millimetern. Die Unterseite ist gelblich oder braungrau. Die Oberseite der Weibchen ist dunkelbraun mit starker blauer Bestäubung an der Flügelbasis.
P. idas anna hat weißliche Flügelunterseiten mit sehr kleinen oder fehlenden orangen Flecken und kleinen schwarzen Flecken. Die Falter können im Feld oft nicht von anderen P. idas-Unterarten unterschieden werden.
P. idas lotis ähnelt P. idas anna, allerdings sind die kleinen orangen Flecke immer vorhanden.
P. idas atrapraetextus ähnelt Plebejus melissa, hat aber eine bläulich weiße Flügelunterseite und die orange Flecke sind etwas kleiner.
P. idas scudderi hat kleine orange Flecke, aber die schwarzen Flecke haben die normale Größe. In Alaska sind die Oberseiten der Weibchen oft stärker blau bestäubt.
P. idas empetri ähnelt scudderi mit dem Unterschied, dass die Flecke auf der Unterseite groß und schwarz sind.

Das Ei ist weißlich-grün. Die samtartig behaarte Raupe hat einen schwarzem Kopf, ist meist grün oder rotbraun und selten grau. Auf dem Rücken verläuft ein dunkelbrauner oder roter Strich mit hellem Saum; an den Seiten je ein rotbrauner Stigmenstreifen. Zwischen den Streifen an den Seiten sind weiße Schrägstreifen. Die Gürtelpuppe ist anfangs grün und wird später hellbraun mit rotbraunen Flecken am Kopf und den Segmenteinschnitten.

Ähnliche Arten

- Der K.ronwicken-B.läuling (P.lebejus a.rgyrognomon) kommt in Europa und A.sien vor und kann nur durch eine Genitaluntersuchung vom Idas-Bläuling unterschieden werden.
- Der G.eißklee-B.läuling (P.lebejus a.rgus) kommt in Europa vor und hat einen kleinen Dorn an der Tibia der Vorderbeine, der fast nur mit einer Lupe erkennbar ist.
- P.lebejus m.elissa kommt in N.ordamerika vor. Das orange Band auf den Unterseite ist durchgängig im Gegensatz zu den dort vorkommenden Plebejus idas-Unterarten, bei denen dies meist in einzelne Flecken aufgebrochen ist. Eine eindeutige Diagnose ist durch eine Genitaluntersuchung möglich, nicht jedoch durch eine genetische Untersuchung, da beide Arten noch zu nahe verwandt sind.

Lebensraum und Verbreitung

Die Lebensräume des Idas-Bläulings in Europa sind basische Magerrasen (Kalkgebiete) und saure Magerrasen (Heidegebiete). In N.ordamerika kommt er in Waldlichtungen, auf Wiesen und in der T.undra vor.
Plebejus idas ist von Europa über den M.ittleren O.sten bis das Innere A.siens und in N.ordamerika weit verbreitet. In S.panien ist der Falter nur gebietsweise vertreten (S.ierra N.evada, M.ontes U.niversales, S.oria, B.urgos, K.antabrisches G.ebirge, P.yrenäen und K.atalonien).
Flächendeckend findet man ihn ab F.rankreich, westwärts bis in den Norden S.kandinaviens und im S.üden bis M.ittelitalien und auf dem B.alkan bis in den N.orden G.riechenlands. Größere Lücken gibt es in N.ordostfrankreich, B.enelux und D.eutschland. Die Art fehlt auf den B.ritischen I.nseln und den M.ittelmeerinseln mit Ausnahme von S.ardinien und K.orsika.
Die Höhenverbreitung reicht in Europa von 200 bis 2100 Meter. Die From lapponicus kommt in N.ordskandinavien vor. In den Alpen und Pyrenäen fliegt unter 1000 Meter Höhe f. opulentus. Zwischen 1000-1500 Meter fliegt in beiden Gebirgen f. alpinus, der eine Übergangsform zu f. haefelfingeri darstellt, die nur in den Zentralalpen vorkommt.
In N.ordamerika kommt sie von A.laska über das südliche K.anada (südlich der H.udson B.ay) und westlich bis nach N.eufundland vor. Die südliche Verbreitung endet nördlich der G.roßen S.een, nur in den R.ocky M.ountains und in K.alifornien tritt die Art weiter südlich auf.
P. idas calliopis kommt in F.rankreich in den Departments A.lpes-de-H.aute-P.rovence und H.autes-A.lpes auf 500-1000 Meter vor. P. idas magnagraeca ist in M.azedonien, B.ulgarien, N.ord- und M.ittelgriechenland weit verbreitet, aber immer nur lokal und in Höhenlagen von 500 bis 1800 Metern.
Die Unterart fliegt in einer Generation von Juni bis Juli zwischen Gebüschen auf blumenreichen, freien Grasflächen oder in lichten Wäldern. In höheren Lagen über 1500 Meter sind die Lebensräume trockene Hänge auf sauren oder kalkigen Böden.
Die Unterart nevadensis ist aus der spanischen S.ierra N.evada beschrieben, wo sie ab 1800 Meter Höhe vorkommt. P. idas bellieri kommt auf K.orsika von Meereshöhe bis auf 1400 Meter vor. Auf S.ardinien lebt die Unterart im M.onte L.imbara und im G.ennargentu auf Höhen zwischen 500 bis 1000 Meter. Die Falter leben auf freien Flächen der M.acchie oder der Wälder.
P. idas anna kommt von der k.alifornischen S.ierra N.evada bis ins südwestliche B.ritish C.olumbia in K.anada vor.
Die seltene Unterart P. idas lotis kommt in K.alifornien im M.endocino C.ounty und in den W.arner M.ountains vor.
Die Verbreitung von P. idas atrapraetextus reicht von M.ontana bis ins südliche A.lberta und südostwärts bis C.olorado. P. idas scudderi ist vom zentralen und südöstlichen B.ritish C.olumbia nach Norden bis A.laska und nach Osten bis N.eufundland zu finden und
P. idas empetri kommt in N.ova S.cotia und auf der P.rince E.dward I.sland vor.

Lebensweise

Die Falter beider Geschlechter saugen Nektar an Blüten, die Männchen saugen auch oft an feuchten Stellen am Boden. Die Männchen patroulieren häufig in ihrem Revier und werden von blauen Schmetterlingen angezogen.
Wenn sie jedoch nach Weibchen suchen, schauen sie nach Faltern mit geschlossenen Flügen, die kopfüber ruhen, und damit die hellen Flügelunterseiten mit den orangen Flecken zeigen.
Von Faltern, die mit dem Kopf nach oben mit geschlossenen Flügeln ruhen, werden sie weit schwächer angelockt. Die Männchen können die Weibchen visuell von denen ähnlicher Arten, wie etwa Plebejus melissa, unterscheiden. Gezeigt wurde dies mit Papierattrappen, die P. idas-Weibchen nachempfunden wurden und toten, aber echten P. melissa Weibchen.
Wenn das Männchen ein passendes paarungswilliges Weibchen gefunden hat, stößt es das passive Weibchen mit seinen Flügeln an und landet anschließend neben ihm und schlägt schnell mit seinen Flügel. Danach beginnt die Paarung. Unempfängliche oder schon begattete Weibchen versuchen zu fliehen oder sie schlagen schnell mit den Flügeln und biegen ihren Hinterleib (Abdomen) nach oben, sodass keine Kopulation stattfinden kann. Die Weibchen legen etwa 90 bis 130 Eier einzeln an den Raupennahrungspflanzen ab.

Flugzeit

Der Idas-Bläuling ist in Europa von Mitte Juni bis Mitte August zu finden. Im Süden gibt es in günstigen, warmen Jahren eine zweite Generation. In der O.berrheinebe fliegt er von Anfang Juni bis Anfang oder Mitte Juli in der ersten Generation und von Anfang August in der zweiten Generation.
Diese fliegt in manchen Jahren bis Ende September. In S.achsen fliegt er von Mitte Juni bis in den September in zwei Generationen, wobei nicht klar ist, ob es jedes Jahr zwei Generationen gibt. Die Unterart P. idas calliopis fliegt in den französischen Alpen in einer Generation von Juli bis August. P. idas bellieri fliegt auf K.orsika und S.ardinien in einer Generation von Ende Juni bis Juli.
In N.ordamerika fliegen die Falter von Ende Juli bis Mitte August im Gebiet von N.eufundland bis L.abrador. Im restlichen Verbreitungsgebiet fliegen sie von Ende Juni bis Mitte August in einer Generation.

Die R.aupen des Idas-Bläulings schlüpfen nach der Überwinterung der Eier im Frühjahr. Die Raupen sind ausgeprägt myrmekophil. Daher findet man um sie herum oft eine A.meisengarde. Die Verpuppung findet im A.meisennest statt. P. idas magnagraeca verpuppt sich zwischen Falllaub oder an Blättern der Nahrungspflanzen.
Als Wirtsameisen wurden S.chwarze W.egameise (L.asius n.iger), A.schgraue S.klavenameise (F.ormica c.inerea), F.ormica s.elsyi, G.roße K.erbameise (F.ormica e.xsecta), F.ormica l.mani, F.urchenlippige K.erbameise (F.ormica p.ressilabris), S.tarkbeborstete G.ebirgswaldameise (F.ormica l.ugubris), R.otrückige S.klavenameise (F.ormica c.unicularia) und F.ormica l.efrancoisi festgestellt. Bei P. idas magnagraeca findet die Symbiose mit F.ormica p.ratensis statt.

Nahrungspflanzen der Raupen

Die R.aupen fressen Le.guminosen und H.eidekrautgewächse. Für Plebejus idas idas sind als Nahrungspflanzen nachgewiesen: B.esenginster (S.arothamnus s.coparius), B.ehaarter G.inster (G.enista p.ilosa), G.ewöhnlicher H.ornklee (L.otus c.orniculatus), W.eißer S.teinklee (M.elilotus a.lbus), E.chter W.undklee (A.nthyllis vu.lneraria), B.esenheide (C.alluna v.ulgaris).
Die einzige noch erhaltene Population in B.aden-W.ürttemberg ernährt sich ausschließlich von B.esenginster, wobei die Weibchen lückige bis sehr lückige B.esenginster-Bestände auf entkalkten Sandflächen für die Eiablage bevorzugen.
Die Nahrungspflanzen der R.aupen von P. idas magnagraeca sind im V.ernon-G.ebirge G.enista d.epressa und in den R.hodopen Cy.tisus v.illosus.
P. idas calliopis ernährt sich von S.anddorn (H.ippophae r.hamnoides) und ist eng an dessen Vorkommen gebunden.
In N.ordamerika gab es von N.ova S.cotia bis N.eufundland Nachweise der Nahrungspflanzen A.lpen-T.ragant (A.stragalus a.lpinus), A.stragalus w.hitneyi (mit Unterart s.iskiyouensis), L.athyrus t.orreyi, L.athyrus p.olyphyllus, L.upinus p.arviflorus, L.otus o.blongifolius var. nevadensis, V.icia .exigua und S.chwarze Kr.ähenbeere (E.mpetrum n.igrum). Von N.ova S.cotia bis M.innesota ist P.orst (L.edum p.alustre) ssp. decumbens, K.almia p.olifolia und V.accinium c.espitosum beschrieben.

Systematik

Die Art wurde von Linné 1761 als Papilio plebejus idas in der Fauna Suecica anhand eines Tieres aus Südschweden erstbeschrieben. Die von Boisduval 1836 unter calliopis beschriebene Art ist heute die gleichnamige Unterart.
P. idas wurde oft mit Plebejus argyrognomon verwechselt und unter diesem Namen beschrieben. So etwa ist der von Vladimir Nabokov 1949 beschriebene P. argyrognomon nach heutiger Nomenklatur P. idas. Die häufigen Verwechslungen führte zu einer verwirrenden Nomenklatur und erschwert besonders Aussagen über ehemalige Vorkommen, wenn die Belegexemplare nicht mehr genitalisiert werden können (Genitaluntersuchung).

Aufgrund lokaler und regionaler Unterschiede wurden viele Unterarten und Formen beschrieben. Der genaue Status ist bei vielen nicht abschließend geklärt. Es könnten unter den Taxa auch Arten (bonae species) dabei sein, wie etwa bei P. idas calliopis, der eine vollkommen andere Raupennahrungspflanze hat.

Gefährdung

In D.eutschland wird der Idas-Bläuling mit der Kategorie 2 (stark gefährdet) in der Roten Liste gefährdeter Arten geführt (B.ayern und S.achsen-A.nhalt Rote Liste Kategorie 2, B.aden-W.ürttemberg und N.iedersachsen Rote Liste Kategorie 1 (vom Aussterben bedroht)).
Das Red Data Book of European Butterflies bewertet den Bestand des Idas-Bläulings in Europa über 25 Jahre (1974–1999) als stabil.
In B.aden-W.ürttemberg kommt der Idas-Bläuling nur noch in der Umgebung von K.arlsruhe vor, weiter nördliche gelegene Vorkommen (bis M.annheim) sind erloschen, ebenso kleine Vorkommen im unteren I.llertal und am östlichen B.odensee.
Der Rückgang ist auf den Verlust von sandigen Flächen mit B.esenginsterbewuchs zurückzuführen, auf denen der B.esenginster entfernt und mit Kiefern aufgeforstet wurde. In O.berbayern kommt die Art sehr lokal auf Flussschotterhalden und nährstoffarmen Brachen im Alpenraum und Alpenvorland vor.
Nur auf der M.ünchner Schotterebene ist sie häufig anzutreffen. In S.achsen lebt der Idas-Bläuling auf Heideflächen im Flachland und kommt aktuell nur in N.ordwestsachsen, im E.lbtal und der O.berlausitz vor.
Historische Funde sind aus dem Raum C.hemnitz und aus S.üdwestsachsen bekannt. Meldungen aus S.chneeberg im V.ogtland wurden zwischenzeitlich als Plebejus argus identifiziert.
Die Art ist durch Sukzession auf den Heideflächen und Aufforstung gefährdet. In den U.SA wird die Unterart P. idas lotis von The Nature Conservancy mit dem Rang T1 - Critically imperiled (stark bedroht) eingestuft, da die von Natur aus seltene Unterart von ihren ehemals sieben bekannten Vorkommen fünf eingebüßt hat.
