A Photographic Beast....

I wasn't chasing this day. Truck was in the shop, and I was at my son's baseball game. Though we did have the perfect view north, while the game was in play.

June is go time when it come to severe weather here in Nebraska. Heat temps were in the upper 90s and we had all the right ingredients for some nasty weather to form. We had just the right amount of shear helped produced this tornadic storm cell that day.

At the time of these captures, this storm cell was in peak mature stage. Just 20 miles north and east of Kearney Nebraska, the areas between Ravenna, and Gibbon. Golf ball sized hail and torrential rainfall, with a Tornado warning boot.

Thunderstorm, photographed north of Crawford, Nebraska on June 2, 2019.

A thunderstorm that I photographed back in early July on the road back from our New Mexico trip. This photo was taken on Hwy. 287 near Bowie, Texas.

Thunderstorms developed on June 1st 2016 across northeast Wisconsin along a cold front. Scattered Storms dotted the Northwoods landscape. Marinette County Wisconsin.

On a day when conditions across much of the central Plains were expected to support tornadic supercells, myself and other chasers who targeted west-central Kansas saw only this rather pretty but unassuming LP (low-precipitation) thunderstorm cell. It had broad rotation and briefly received a severe thunderstorm warning for hail, but due to weaker than expected convergence (low-level support for lift) and a stronger than expected cap (warm layer aloft, which resists lifting of parcels through it); it failed to intensify further and instead gradually died out.

The only significant tornadoes occurred near Benkelman, NE in an area which I easily could have reached had I stuck with my morning target of southwest Nebraska; en route I decided that convection would stay discrete (isolated and better able to produce widely visible, photogenic tornadoes) longer further south due to the stronger cap, but thought the cap would still break enough to allow for sustained storms. Whoops.

thunderstorm.

As the sun got lower in the sky, another large storm popped up to the southwest of the storm we were on. This storm would later have reports of a fairly large tornado in the OKC area.
