Such an awesome scene yesterday morning over Lake Michigan in Leland. A thunderstorm in February was pretty exciting to witness. I didn’t get to capture the beginning coming across the lake but this was after the rain stopped. Some really unique clouds filled the sky. They didn’t last long and the stormed moved fast.
The peak in severe weather occurs this week based on climatology. So I guess it was no surprise to be greeted with this very large line of thunderstorms at sunrise. It extended more than 50 miles eastward and I was located at its western edge. Saw some lightning flashes and heard rumbles but no rain. Looking southeast.

On March 31, 2023 we had our first wicked thunderstorm of the year. At first it was just gray and gloomy outside with a bit of rain coming down, also it was getting windy. The first set of my photo images I was able to take outside as the weather was not severe yet. The sky was looking gray and ominous! I took these in my backyard and to the left of my house as you step out the backdoor. See for yourself as I go through the night! In daylight's gray, the tempest takes its hold,
Thunder rolls with a roar both fierce and bold.
Rain pours down in torrents, swift and grand,
A drumming beat on roof and sodden land.
The barn stands firm, its weathered frame holds fast,
While lightning splinters through the storm's amassed.
Nearby, a tree in gusty winds is bent,
A wild and twisted dance, its strength is spent.
In the storm’s embrace, the world is swept away,
Yet the barn and tree endure through this harsh day.
Nature's fury in the open sky’s display,
A tempest’s song in the light of storm-torn day.

It was the severe thunderstorm with a huge amount of the rain and lighting. One could see some unusual cloud formation like twister.

The fact that such colors could be seen that evening is due to the low position of the sun and the longer path the sun's rays have to travel before reaching our atmosphere. The longer the path, the more particles there are in the way of the light, causing it to be filtered more and more. The red component remains, resulting in the strong red color.
The long exposure mode “LiveComposite” on my camera further enhanced the color effect. Nevertheless, this is how the eyes perceived the moment.

Dass an diesem Abend eine solche Färbung zu sehen war, ist auf den niedrigen Sonnenstand zurückzuführen und den längeren Weg der Sonnenstrahlen, bis sie unsere Atmosphäre erreichen. Je länger der Weg, desto mehr Teilchen sind dem Licht im Weg, wodurch es immer weiter gefiltert wird. Der Rot-Anteil bleibt, wobei das kräftige Rot zustande kommt.
Der Langzeitbelichtungs-Modus "LiveComposite" meiner Kamera hat den Farbeffekt noch verstärkt. Trotzdem haben die Augen den Moment so wahrgenommen.

White Sands Photography, captured not as as originally intended on a sunny day that turned into a sandstorm with heavy rains and lightning, inside which I found myself and spend more then two hours to get out of. Was huge mistake to not checking a weather alerts before going to sand dunes. Which I have seen after, weather alerts in the area, strong west wind advisory. Winds 30 to 40mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. When I got out of there I was very wet and tired, I had sand everywhere you could imagine. Even my camera stopped working. But before getting out of the storm, I managed to take some beautiful photos. In the same day i got a chance to photograph a beautiful sunrise and then sunny day, sand storm with rains and black sky, afterwards sky with rainbow and on the end epic sunset.
I’m not sure if I like it (again! lol). If you think I’m never satisfied with the result… well, maybe you’re right. :D
Yeps, I keep stealing outtakes from my red umbrella shooting. Loads of crazy ideas for new shots tumble around but I have no time to carry them out. I’ve got a lot of unanswered mails as well, I’m sorry. My life is a thunderstorm at the moment.
