Who knew eastern Idaho was this beautiful...and has this many intense storms? This shot doesn't include the rainbow that surfaced a couple minutes later, but I adore that combination of the dirt road, dark clouds, and green, green, green fields. Huzzah for Tetonia/Driggs!

The outline of an avil (thuinderstorm) at left provides the perfect block for the last of the sun's rays. The earth shadow at right with anti-crepuscular rays is exactly opposite the western storm.
In Devils Kitchen, east of Greybull Wyoming on the edge of the Shell Creek Valley, is known for its badlands topography where soft, layered sedimentary rocks like sandstone, siltstone, shale and claystone get eroded into spires, towers and fanciful shapes. In this semiarid environment there is sparse vegetation and little soil development on these rock outcrops. Erosion caused by flash flooding from occasional thunderstorms carves this landscape with an assist from the other usual physical and chemical agents that weather and weaken the rock. In Devils Kitchen, the varicolored, Early Cretaceous Cloverly Formation is exposed at the eroded center of a upfold or anticline called the Shell Creek Dome.

Thunderstorms are attributed to hot, wet air close to the ground combined with an unstable atmosphere. "Florida is the Sunshine State, but summer is the time of year where you will encounter a brief thunderstorm almost every day..." Well, its true - we encounter it too yesterday, in the beach near St Augustine. Shooting in rain outdoor - its almost always a complicated process, but shooting in thunderstorm on the beach - its like puling a tail of hungry tiger. Your equipment - camera, tripod, reflectors - they are became a great lightning arrester - and in open areas (like beach) you have a great chance to looks like a Christmas Tree on arsonist's party... :)
i like thunderstorms. they're interesting for taking photos. but it's very difficult to photograph it :)
