For the first time in a long time, a thunderstorm rolled through the area. This shot looks into my neighbor's yard and this lightning bolt lit up the sky. First lightning capture with the new camera and I'm still pleased!

25 minutes after a rather intense hail storm, this severe thunderstorm was moving away at 30 mph. The white streaks at the base of this storm are hail shafts (about 12 miles distance).
A massive storm hit Sydney this afternoon and we just now received the edge of it, extraordinarily strong wind, and some heavy rain for a brief period with thunder and lightning. But the most unusual sky Colour as well which we have not seen here before in Fern Bay over the past almost 7 years we have been here.
Active afternoon with popcorn thunderstorms after 1:30PM until 7:30PM. Not much rain hit my house. Note how fast the walkway dries after a brief shower.
This shot was a challenge and took some time and patience to get. The weather had been rather grey all day as the storm system that started last night (6/6/12) was still working its way very slowly across the plains. I got home from work a little late (6:15 pm) this evening, picked up my wife and two little girls and headed over to my folks place for the evening. My brothers Michael and Spencer were there and we all stood out in the yard to watch the coming storm build to massive force. Around 8:00 my brothers and I jumped into the car to go catch some shots of the cloud bank but as we shot the evening light on the clouds the storm intensified into a major thunderstorm. My younger brother Spencer and I decided to go storm chasing and headed into the storm to catch some lightning shot. I've always wanted to try shooting lightning but never before had the chance. After an hour and a half of driving around to find the thick of the lightning we finally caught this shot just outside of Cheyenne around 9:30 pm. Satisfied with the shot and with the lightning intensifying further we decided to head home.

But anyway: Lately the weather has been quite unstable here in DK with the occational rain shower and thunderstorms. This was the perfect occation to test my "Pluto Trigger" which is supposed to capture lightning. The trigger performed well and captured some lightning during the night. I was sound asleep while the camera did the night shift :-)

Last night I took my first picture of a lightning with my new D5100. It was really hot at the beginning of the week, sometimes nearly 37°C. That's very much for the place where I live!
A define hot spots as areas where thunderstorms develop and continue to develop after the older forming storms move away. Today was just that situation. This thunderstorm appears nearly stationary but was being replaced with new storms as the old one dissipated where it formed.
Between 13:30 and the end of the clip, 0.56" fell.
This timelapse is accelerated 400x to save bandwidth. However, it shows the cycle I describe above prety well.

Not quite sure if this really is a "gustnado" but it is a very impressive and very rare cloud formation here south of Munich. Never saw one like this before!
A gustnado is a specific type of short-lived, low-level cyclonic cloud that can form in a severe thunderstorm. The name is a portmanteau of "gust front tornado", as gustnadoes form due to non-tornadic cyclonic features in the downdraft from the gust (outflow) front of a strong thunderstorm, especially one which has become outflow dominated.
Ob es sich hier wirklich um einen Böenfrontwirbel handelt, bin ich mir nicht sicher. Auf jeden Fall ist es eine sehr beeindruckende, ja fast schon erschreckende Wolkenformation. Von der Atmosphäre her war es fast schon so, dass man einen Tornado hätte erwarten können. Ich habe hier etwas in der Art bisher noch nicht gesehen! Auf jeden Fall habe ich mich dann schleunigst auf den Heimweg gemacht... ;-) Danach kam dann Gewitter, Sturm und Starkregen aber kein Hagel.
Böenfrontwirbel, die keine Tornados sind, sondern dynamisch erzeugte Kleintromben, entstehen an Böenfronten oder anderen Konvergenz- und Scherungslinien in der atmosphärischen Grenzschicht, an denen vertikale Wirbelstärke vorhanden ist. An kräftigen Böenfronten können solche Wirbel durchaus F1 auf der Fujita-Skala erreichen und damit schon nennenswerte Schäden verursachen. Nicht zuletzt deshalb werden Böenfrontwirbel oft fälschlich als Tornados gemeldet. Der Wirbel selbst wird hauptsächlich durch hochgewirbelten Staub sichtbar.
