KCSM 4705 leads 5 new CPKC T4s on train 181, racing just ahead of a powerful line of severe thunderstorms that are moving rapidly southeast towards the tracks. This is a shot I have always wanted and it came out perfectly, fusing my two favorite things together into one shot.
Day 197 - Thunderstorm?
Today was a long day. Early in the morning we went to Hamburg and have watched a triathlon. Then we were at the river Elbe, very big ships we have seen there. When we were back home, we slept a round. And now we are awaiting the thunderstorm... :)
Heute war ein langer Tag. Früh morgens sind wir nach Hamburg gefahren und haben bei einem Triathlon zugesehen. Danach waren wir an der Elbe, ganz große Schiffe haben wir dort gesehen. Als wir wieder zuhause waren, haben wir eine Runde geschlafen. Und jetzt erwarten wir das Gewitter... :)

A severe thunderstorm (later tornado-warned) drifts over Cincinnati as I'm driving home from the north.
Nature, flexing her muscles. We rarely see big thunderstorms like this in norway, i guess this one formed due to the unusually warm weather we´ve been having lately. The pouring rain and thunderclaps woke me up, so i grabbed my gear, and ran to a lookoutpoint near my home. Glad i did, these are my first lightningshots, and they turned out quite alright no?
The sheer power of bolts like this is quite overwhelming, i love beeing out in thunderstorms.
This severe thunderstorm formed at the end of a squall line and made a direct hit. In 23 minutes, I received 0.51" and had pea size hail. The greenish color indicates falling hail.

Thunderstorm approaching Sydney from the West. It brought hail, lightning, and lots of rain. Was gone as quickly as it appeared into a previously perfectly sunny day.
The June 2012 Mid-Atlantic and Midwest derecho was one of the most destructive and deadly fast-moving severe thunderstorm complexes in North American history. The progressive derecho tracked across a large section of the Midwestern United States and across the central Appalachians into the mid-Atlantic states on the afternoon and evening of June 29, 2012, and into the early morning of June 30, 2012. It resulted in 22 deaths, widespread damage and millions of power outages across the entire affected region. The storm prompted the issuance of four separate severe thunderstorm watches by the Storm Prediction Center. A second storm in the late afternoon caused another watch to be issued across Iowa and Illinois.

Another afternoon, yet another Thunderstorm. Had the Canon with me so I headed out to one of my favorite spots to view the storm as it headed our way. After thrity minutes or so, the rain let loose. Beautiful.

While the tornado risk was much better for northern Pennsylvania on this day, I decided to stay closer to home hoping that I would get lucky enough for a good storm or two to form just east of the mountain range out here. While I didn't see any of the tornadoes Pennsylvania had, I couldn't be happier with what I got. A small cell formed over Three Springs, Pennsylvania, and slowly matured as it made its way eastward towards my location. By the time it made its way over the mountains, it became severe warned and a mean looking meso began to form. I made my way just south of Newville as this storm became even stronger, and by the time I found a good vantage point, it had matured into a mean looking supercell. I watched it spin over the amish farmland, and after about half an hour or so, it weakened and died out. Another cell fired up behind the now dead supercell, and this storm had beautiful tilted updraft towers with lightning popping out like crazy. I sat there, my hand on my shutter as I waited for bolts to pop out. The storm began to die quickly and bolts only popped out about every minute. I started losing hope that I wouldn't get any lightning once again, however, this storm was nice enough to wave a final goodbye as it popped out a beautiful cg strike from out of the rain just for me, and low and behold, I managed to snag it. Overall, this day was great, and it felt like I was out on the plains for a little while. Anyways, hope you enjoy!
