The homeobox genes are my favorites; they are like “subroutine calls” that have powerful phenotypic effects. At the DFJ bionano gathering in HMB, Juan Enriquez is showing a genetically engineered three wing chicken from Tabin’s Lab. The gene that has been modified is affectionately called “Sonic Hedgehog” (his son really likes SEGA!)

Ruger Mk I at top; Ruger Mk II; Ruger Mk IV Hunter.
The Mk II was my third firearms purchase. Everyone ought to have one. I came by the Mk I later. The Mk IV Hunter was love at first sight when I saw it in a Reno gun store (I needed it anyway to replace the Mk II, which I had given to Ingrid, but now that Ingrid is in Reno all the Rugers are together).
I don't own a Mk III, and because of the lame loaded chamber indicator I will probably never buy one.
This photo allows you to see the evolution of the design. I don't shoot the Mk I much because the bolt doesn't lock back on an empty magazine, so you have to use a chamber flag for range safety. The Mk II has an amazing trigger because of some work I did to it long ago (I forget exactly what), so that's another reason it's preferred.
The heft of the Mk IV Hunter due to its bull barrel makes it fun to shoot, but some people get a little fatigued from holding it up.
Quick and dirty firearms photo technique:
I have an old Olympus digital camera at the office, maybe ten years old, set up on a tripod. I put the gun(s) on a table in the warehouse with a (dirty) white top where the light is best, then set up the camera with the tripod. I set it to aperture priority, and close the lens down as far as it will go (in this case, f 8), so even with low light I get crisp focus. You need the tripod because without flash it will be a long exposure.
Then in Photoshop I use the white eyedropper in the Curves dialogue to white out the background. This cleans it up nicely, but also washes the entire image out a bit and you sometimes lose a lot of detail. Then I clean up all the marks and scratches on the table, and use Auto Levels to get the contrast and everything right.
It sounds complicated, but it's actually quick and easy.
So remember these simple steps:
1. Aperture priority;
2. Lens closed down as much as possible (f 8 in my case, but many cameras can go all the way down to f 22);
3. Tripod and timer;
4. Enlarge canvas so you have room to rotate if necessary and improve the crop;
5. White dropper in Curves dialogue;
6. Use the Selector to erase marks and scratches on the background and also to clean up background;
7. Auto Levels;
8. Crop.

Three Musicians
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973)
Fontainebleau, summer 1921. Oil on canvas, 6' 7" x 7' 3 3/4"
The Museum of Modern Art, New York
The three musicians and dog conjure a bygone period of bohemian life, enjoyed here by Picasso in the guise of a Harlequin flanked by two figures who may represent poet–friends of the artist's: Guillaume Apollinaire, who was recently deceased, and Max Jacob. The patterned flatness of the work is derived from cut–and–pasted paper, and stands in stark contrast to the sculptural monumentality of Picasso's Three Women at the Spring, also painted in the summer of 1921.
These were the three flowers that had bloomed on her Desert Rose Tree. Just a closeup of the flowers themselves.

A favourite grouping of trees that I revisit periodically. Flat light and a blank sky gave a certain effect which I've accentuated slightly by tweaking the midtone contrast.

Three enormous bronze swords stand monument to the battle of Hafrsfjord in the year 872, when Harald Hårfagre (Fairheaded Harald) united Norway into one kingdom. The monument was designed by Fritz Røed (1928 - 2002) from Bryne, just south of Stavanger. It was unveiled by Norway's King Olav in 1983.
The swords, which are about 10 meters tall, stand for peace and unification. One sword is larger than the others. This was Fairheaded Harald's sword. The swords are planted in solid rock - representing peace.
The swords can be found at Møllebukta which is a bay area on the southern shore of Hafrsfjord. The name "Møllebukta" derives from "mølla" (mill) and "bukt (bay). There used to be a corn mill here. Today the area is one of Stavangers most popular recreational areas.
The three swords is a memorial of Harald Haarfargre who died in the battle of Hafrsfjord hundreds of years ago during the viking period.

Chevrolet Corvette C2 Roadster (1963-67) Engine 327cu (5358cc) V8

The Corvette (C2) ran between model years 1963-67. Designed by Bill Mitchell and based on the Corvette Super Sport racer, the C2 became known as the Stingray. Available as a Roadster and for the first time a Corvette Coupe.
Introduced in 1963 the C2 (2nd Gen) Corvette brought a new not only had a new design, but also newfound handling prowess. and was lighter than the 1st Generation models so acceleration improved despite unchanged horsepower. In its first year production was divided almost evenly between the convertible and the new coupe - 10,919 and 10,594, respectively - and more than half the convertibles were ordered with the optional lift-off hardtop, though the numbers of the Coupe variant were to fall behind the Roadster in later years. And it was not until 1969 when the Coupe, then with a removable T top outsold the Roadster. All 1963 cars had 327cid engines, which made 250 hp (186 kW) standard, with optional variants that made 300 hp (224 kW), 340 hp (254 kW) and 360 hp (268 kW). The most powerful engine was the Rochester fuel injected 327cid V8, which made 360 hp (272 kW)
The suspension was refined for 1964 along with some cosmetic changes including the Coupes backbone window and the two simulated air intakes were eliminated from the hood, though their indentations remained. Also, the decorative air-exhaust vent on the coupe's rear pillar was made functional, but only on the left side. Drivetrains remained as before apart from the high performance engines which gained some noteable improvements.
Styling was cleaned up for the 1965 model year along with an all-new braking system and larger powerplants. 1965 styling alterations were subtle, confined to a smoothed-out hood now devoid of scoop indentations, a trio of working vertical exhaust vents in the front fenders that replaced the previous nonfunctional horizontal "speedlines," restyled wheel covers and rocker-panel moldings, The Sing Ray y became ferocious with the mid-year debut of a big-block V-8, the 425 hp, 396cu in Big Block engine. 1965 also added another 350HP small block engine (Option L79)
For the 1966 Corvette, the big-block V-8 came in two forms of 390 and 425bhp Though it had no more horsepower than the previous high-compression 396, the 427 in³ (7 L), 430 hp packed a lot more torque The 1966 model's frontal appearance was mildly altered with an eggcrate grille insert to replace the previous horizontal bars, and the coupe lost its roof-mounted extractor vents, which had proven inefficient. Corvettes also received an emblem in the corner of the hood for 1966.
The 1967 model year was the last for the C2, the C3 had been schedualed for 1967 but was delayed with teething troubles. Changes were again modest: Five smaller front fender vents replaced the three larger ones, and flat-finish rockers sans ribbing conferred a lower, less chunky appearance., a single reversing light over the number plate and new wheel covers. . Interior alterations were modest and included revised upholstery, and the handbrake moved from beneath the dash to between the seats. The ultimate Corvette engine for 1967 was coded L88, even wilder than the L89, and was as close to a pure racing engine as Chevy had ever offered in regular production

After the Tour de France last year we have the new Tour de Yorkshire this year. This one came right through Slaithwaite, Passing within a mile or so of our house twice. I’m a bit ambivalent about watching cycling at the roadside, It’s a bit different down in France, in the Pyrenees or on the Champs Elysees in beautiful sunshine, soaking the atmosphere up. As a cyclist and photographer I’d been getting asked for ages where I was going to watch and photograph the TdY, the truth is, I wasn’t that bothered about it and didn’t have a plan until the actual day.
Sunday dawned with horrendous weather, very heavy rain pounding the house roof at 7.00AM, the radar picture showed a mass of slow moving rain heading west. We were going walking after coffee at Crumbles in Marsden and we sat the worst of the rain out until 10.00, it was drizzle by now, still a full waterproofs walk though. Home for a change and back out for more coffee and toast at the Merrie England and we were well placed for Scapegoat Hill to watch the race. We drove through Slaithwaite at 12.00 and it was deserted with about twenty people outside The Little Bridge wine bar. Tory had an outside bar setup for the day. Where was everybody?
We parked over Round Ings Road on the top of Scapegoat Hill. The sun was coming out and the sky was breaking to blue, fantastic, and what a change from this morning. People were heading to the top of Crimble Clough in their thousands, it was reminiscent of Holme Moss at the TdF last year. There was a great atmosphere, lots of people we knew out to watch, quite a few asking why we weren’t at the Little Bridge, I get a bit pissed off with this belief that we live in the wine bar, I have two drinks, three or four times a week in the Little Bridge – in the evening – and we are usually home by 9.00. I don’t set foot in a pub during the day, I prefer cafes for coffee and toast. At the wedding we went to someone asked why we weren’t in the Commercial – I never go in the Commercial, when I go out, I go out to eat, having a drink along the way is incidental to eating for me – get the message folks! It was looking like things were going to pan out perfectly. I wanted to get a spot up Waller Clough Road, the last bit of the climb out of Slaithwaite, with a clear view where I could get a slight side shot whilst the cars and bikes were still a distance away and not actually right next to me and have the cyclists lit from the front so they weren’t in deep shadow. It was going to be impossible on the higher slopes as it was packed and people were still arriving. I settled for the end of Highfield Road ( Moorside Edge) as it was quite wide. I didn’t think that the cyclists would pick much speed up here although it’s flattish just there, they would be getting a breather ready for the last bit of the climb. I got plenty of chance to check my gear and setting as the front running Police bikes came through at great speed, it’s very easy to get caught using a slightly slow shutter speed and not realise until after the event. The motorbikes were looking sharp. In the end I had around ten shots that missed focus and unusable, I’ve probably uploaded a couple of questionable ones. The cyclists came through together and there wasn’t any chance to pick individuals out, it was a case of firing away, making sure the focus was locked on to at least one cyclist.
When the race had passed it was a mass exodus. I had to get Jayne to Meltham for a wedding at 3.00PM so we didn’t linger. When we walked into Slaithwaite around 5.30 it was packed around every pub, the wine bar was surrounded by people singing and dancing, fortunately it was OK inside. Not a bad day. No mention of our area in the news and nothing shown on TV, they only showed the later part of the day. As I explained to people, it’s not football, cycling struggles to get TV coverage and it’s free to watch at the roadside, they don’t understand that there isn’t any money in it, it relies on sponsorship and in some cases – like football – wealthy individuals who want to own a team.
this is the story of the lake and the three fish that were in it,
one of them intelligent, another half-intelligent, and the third, stupid.
some fisherman came to the edge of the lake with nets. and the three fish saw them...
...the intelligent fish decided at once to to make the long, difficult trip to the ocean.
he thought, "i won't consult with these two on this. they will only weaken my resolve, because they love this place so. they call it home. and the ignorance will keep them here." and so the intelligent fish made its whole length a moving footprint and, like a deer the dogs chase, suffered greatly on its way, but finally made it to the edgeless safety of the sea...
...the half-intelligent fish thought, "my guide is gone. i should have gone with him, but i didn't, and now i've lost my chance to escape. i wish that i had gone with him." so the half-intelligent fish mourned the absence of his guide for a while, and then thought to himself, "what can i do to save myself from these men and their nets? perhaps if i pretend to be dead! i'll belly up on the surface and float like a weed floats, just giving myself totally to the water. to die before i die." so he did that and so he bobbed up and down, helpless, within the arm's reach of the fisherman. "look at this! the biggest fish of all is dead." one of the men lifted him up by the tail, spat on him, and threw him up on the ground he rolled over and over and slid secretly near the water, and then, back in...
...meanwhile, the third fish, the dumb one, was agitatedly jumping about, trying to escape with agility and cleverness. the net, of course, finally closed around him. and as he lay there in the terrible frying-pan, he thought, "i'll get out of this, i'll never live again in the limits of a lake. next time, next time the ocean! i'll make the infinite ocean my home. the infinite, my home."
