Driver seen awaiting departure from Tywyn is Skarloey Railway Number 3 SIR HANDLE otherwise known as the Talyllyn Railway Number 3 SIR HAYDN. September 13, 1982.
The Talyllyn has a long connection to the Reverend Awdry writer of the Railway Series books which much later were adapted into the popular "Thomas the Tank Engine" TV series. Rev Awdry's office has been rebuilt in the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum at Tywyn Station.

After dropping the kids off at skating practice I stopped by the depot to grab a shot of Thomas and Percy. Percy is new this year so I wanted a shot of the two together. I had to wait a bit for the ramp shadow to ease off the face of Percy while still providing some nose light. This is a big summer event for the museum and a solid revenue generator. DM&IR 193 provided the power for Thomas while Soo 700 supported Percy. On this morning Sir Topham Hat must have been pleased and there appeared to be no confusion or delay.
Working on a Diorama to complete before the end of the 80th
I've got the bones of the Layout figured out. From here it's translation into the real world and figuring out the landscaping surrounding the station.
My next Railway Series LEGO models are the book-exclusive characters Wilbert and Sixteen!
Having already designed an austerity saddletank, they were mostly a case of building it again in a different colour - but there are some slight differences!
In truth, the dark blue of my own saddletank would better suit the 'real' Wilbert - but I have strong nostalgia for the ERTL toys of these two so I went with a lighter shade. I imagine it's how he'd have appeared in the Thomas the Tank Engine TV series.
Sorry for boring with this theme. It's just that tiny toys are so much fun to collect! They cost next to nothing and take up relatively little space. My addiction to them reminds me of a friends who effortlessly transitioned from premium scotch to cheap bear. My favourites in this set are the tiny Paddington, the little flocked whale, the Waldi dachshund Olympic mascot and the Fisher Price captain.
Adjacent to my LEGO Railway Series models, here's something unique - a MOC of an OC!
This coffee pot locomotive is called Tid, and is Twitter user @ExpressRhubarb's interpretation of one of the engines that used to work on Thomas the Tank Engine's branch line!
Tom has built an excellent set of models depicting said locos, and kindly commissioned me to draw two of them last year! So this is, in fact, a LEGO model based on an illustration based on a model based on an unseen Railway Series character! 😄
A very cold, crisp and clear morning at the East Anglian Railway Museum on 11th December 2022 meant that "Thomas" was putting up a very fine exhaust.
My son found these long forgotten toy trains whilst clearing out cupboards the other day; something I suspect we've all being doing a lot of just lately! I just love the expressions on their faces, probably sums up how we are all feeling at the moment. :-)
hbm :)
These are a miniscule part of the Thomas collection of toys that have overtaken my home. My son is crazy about Thomas the Tank Engine, so when I asked him what bench Monday he'd like to do today, he said it had to be Thomas. All the Thomas toys were chosen by him to be in this shot, and he did the set up all by himself. All I had to do was stick the camera on a tripod and click the shutter.
Next up in my series of LEGO models based on The Railway Series is Mavis!
I'm very pleased with how she turned out. Not enough room to spell out all of "The Ffarquhar Quarry Co." but I think it gives the right impression all the same :)
Inspired by a few designs out there, and the addition of some newer pieces available, I figured I was ready to design a proper looking Thomas
I don't build in 8 wide, but this is an interpretation in 8-W L-Gauge
