This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 20th of July 1915.

During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.

The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images please comment below.

it didn't work. he crashed at at least 140mph. the car was written off. he was unhurt.

the next frame on the roll was a blurred shot of the sky. i had hit the ground. he hit the wall about 30-40 feet from me.

behind me was a large metal sign advertising something. in it were stuck numerous pieces of the car.

So I took a photo on the copy of Mozart's score !

This van stood out from everything else in the car park.

I don't know much about these vans, but '74-'77 seems like good guess for MY.

This is another view across the tidal flats of Arrochar in central Scotland. This is from my 2013 trip. It is cropped down from a single image.

This dog was spotted on Troon beach during a group shoot today and this shot was taken of it looking out to sea towards the lighthouse on the horizon.

This is my second entry in Erin's Monodala. This one uses the pattern 'IXORUS'. I have taken progress photos of the Zendala if you wish to view. This took me a while to do, was very intricate as there is very little space in some of the sections of the template.... oh well! once you start you just can't stop :) Enjoy and thanks for looking. www.thebrightowl.com

'Anini Beach near Kiluea, Hawaii

This beach was called W'anini, but the "W" washed off the sign, and ever since it's been called 'Anini Beach.

The beach is absolutely beautiful and clear, lots of reefs and fish, and freaking amazing houses along the beach front

This little bug has been on this flower for days and days. He and I have become well acquainted. He's just small enough to make taking his picture a challenge. Of course, he's often facing the wrong direction, the stinker. Sometimes he glares at me; other times he just looks away in disinterest. He is a cute little thing.

Overview of Charters Towers History.

Until around 1900 this was the second largest city in QLD! It called itself “The World” and with good reason. The gold finds here lasted a good 40 years. The town had a long period of wealth and growth. And the town took itself to the world which was a first for any mining centre in Australia and for any city apart from the state capital cities. Because of the wealth in the town share brokers started businesses there in the early 1880s. They agreed in 1885 to form a group and establish a stock exchange – the only one in Australia that has ever existed outside of a capital city. Then in 1886 they took the city to the world- at the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London. The set up a display of mining and ore crushing and they accepted £1 shares in various mining companies that operated in the town. It was a great success. One company is an example- Day Dawn Block and Wyndham- they received almost £500,000 in paid up shares to finance their future mining work! This exhibition put Charters Towers on the world map and was the first time London investors invested directly in Australian mines rather than through a London based share broking company or finance company. Some of the companies were duds but most were not. The peak gold yields from Charters Towers did not come until 1899 but these yields would not have occurred without the London finance for the deep shafts that were needed to reach to gold. The influx of money into the town transformed the place. The wooden structures, many dating from 1872 the time of the original gold finds were replaced with lavish and imposing stone and brick structures. The main street was rebuilt. Grand houses were built by the successful miners and the period from 1886-1893 was a boom building period. Prosperity was assisted by the development of the new cyanide gold processing works which produced even more gold for the miners and investors. The new cyanide works opened in Charters Towers in 1892. Fortunately we can still see some of this faded glory in Charters Towers today. But in the 1890s it was the best place to live in QLD outside of Brisbane. Thus it was not surprising that the Northern Mining Register newspaper wrote in 1897 that:

Most mining in Charters Towers ceased around 1912.

Discovery and Early Establishment of Charters Towers.

Hugh Mosman, whom we have heard of before on this tour, George Clarke, John Fraser and their Aboriginal horse boy called Jupiter Mosman were prospecting near Ravenswood in December 1871 when they found the first gold in the region. They registered their find as Charters Towers after Mr Charters the Gold Commissioner of the day and Towers because of the conical shaped stone hills (tors) near the site which looked like towers. A gold rushed quickly followed in 1872 with the birth of the town. Mosman and his mates discovered 10 gold reefs. Early finds were of alluvial gold but soon deep shafts were needed to extract the ore and companies were formed with money and capital to undertake this work. British investment led to the transformation of the canvas and wooden town into a fine stone metropolis occurred after 1886 as explained above. The gold at Charters Towers was the major find in QLD and an important find for Australia. By the end of 1878 there were 12 mills processing ore in the town. The Venus Battery works which started operations in 1872 operated right through until 1972. For most of the period from the mid 1870s up to 1906 gold exports from QLD exceeded those of the other major QLD export - wool. QLD certainly had much more gold than NSW but much less than Victoria although not all QLD gold came from Charters Towers. During its peak years over 200,000 ounces of gold a year were mined in Charters Towers. Although the mining companies closed down operations in 1912 individual miners continued working the field right up to World War Two and the old cyanide ore dumps from the battery works have been reworked since then.

This view is what I most generally get these days when hiking with our Thursday group. I'm usually at the tail end of the group even if I'm not taking pictures. But this is what I see when I stop to take photos. Look for the circles in the photo. The nearest one is Jim who held back to make sure I was still within sight. Way far ahead is the rest of the group which is also circled (enlarging the photo will help locate the circles.) Anyway, this perspective doesn't bother me anymore. I will eventually catch up when the front runners pause for whatever reason.

Victoria Avenue. Trefresa House. This Cornish name was used as Trefresa Farm in Cornwall was where his father John Legoe was born. His father was a sea Captain and captained many passenger ships to Australia from the 1850s to the 1870. He captained the maiden voyage of the Yalata to Adelaide, his visit to SA, in 1865. His last voyage to SA was in 1877 when he bought his family with him to settle here. His son Glen became a director of G & R Wills Company and later W Moffin & Co and George Wilcox and Co. He was mainly an importer with these companies and an exporter of meat, wool, hides but also had a pastoral estate at Binnum in the South East. Glen bought his land in Victoria Avenue in 1902 with a house standing on it erected by a previous owner. In 1919 he engaged architects Woods, Bagot, Jory and Laybourne-Smith to prepare drawings for major alterations to the value of around £5000. This work transformed the look and style of the original house. The “new’ residence was built in the English style with a steep tiled roof, wide verandas, round columns, and attic windows. It has the appearance of a British colonial house from hill country in India. The unique appearance of the house includes dormer windows beside a central chimney which softens the massive bulk of the steep roof. Glen Legoe’s Trefresa House was subdivided into 11 properties in 1922 when Glen Avenue was created. Glen Avenue opened up land back to the railway line. The house of 14 main rooms and with over two acres of gardens was sold in 1938 and by 1941 it was owned by Clive Langdon Bonython a member of one of SA’s wealthiest and best known family through investments and ownership of the Advertiser. Clive was a mere accountant and business director. His directorships included Wiles manufacturing Company and Mumzone products etc. The property has superb cast iron gates. The steep roof looks as if designed to cope with tropical downpours or massive winter snows.

This is a photograph that I had used as part of a panaramic. The sun had backlit these clouds beautifully and pink rays of light could be seen coming out from the otherwise hidden setting sun.

This manuscript was created in Flanders ca. 1270-80. Originally a standard liturgical Psalter, it was converted in the fourteenth century for the use of an English owner, possibly a cleric, through the addition of a second litany focused on English saints, and an Office of the Dead. The illuminations, comprised of vignettes depicting labors of the months in the calendar and historiated initials within the psalms themselves, belong to the first phase of production, and are characteristic of Psalter iconography from the Bruges-Ghent region during this period.

Maria Brink - voce, pianoforte

Chris Howorth - chitarra solista, cori

Randy Weitzel - chitarra

This view is looking SE toward downtown Barrington. The Metra coach yards are behind me. That's Chessie's and the old CNW Barrington station back to the right of the tower. It was a dreary day here in December 1997. This view doesn't quite look the same today.
