This is the 69th picture in my series of Reading Arundhati Roy. Here a man is seen reading Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things.
Two things I love about this monument. The decedent's unique name, and the citation of just her mother. Patriarchy is easy to find in cemeteries– I once saw an engraving off to the side of a man's monument that read "In memory of his second wife Katherine"– so while it's common to see both parents cited or just the father cited, seeing just a mother is rare and a welcome contrast.

I took your mom to the restaurant yesterday and I sat and worked on
things I needed to get done. For a while you studied your book but
after about 30 minutes got bored. So it was time to entertain
yourself. You got a pitcher of water and poured water into a cup. Then
you thought it would be fun to put a napkin into the water in the cup.
After a bit of that and the pitcher empty and water all over the floor
you started wringing water out on the ramps. You thought this was just
so funny and kept doing your special little laugh after each time. Oh,
to be a kid again.
The first thing is a chothes peg, the second thing is an Allen key and, the last thing is a piece of a transformer... One with a core of three phases.
i’m sorry that i’ve been complaining about not “having it” lately. it really hasn’t anything to do with my sorry-butt photography skills. more then that, i guess it’s been a reflection on my ability to appreciate the “simple things.”
over the past year, i’ve fallen in love with photography because i suddenly realized that i could capture those moments (the simple things) that made life precious. you know…the pics that get you those “why did you take a pic of that?” look.
anyways, been so busy lately, that i’ve been finding it hard to recognize, much less appreciate, the simple things… i need a slap…

One of the most astonishing things I have ever seen. Ryoji Ikeda’s Spectra at Victoria Tower Gardens by the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey on the night of August 6 2014, marking a moment of national commemoration for the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
From dusk to dawn for seven nights only (August 4 - 11), 49 beams of light shine high into the sky over London and can be seen from 12 miles away. At their source, you can see each individual beam, feel their heat and hear the wonderful accompanying soundtrack. From a distance the lights appear as one single powerful beam, shining high up into space.
I arrived in the hour before dusk as the lights were being prepared and switched on, one by one. Around 70 people watched from this Westminster open space by the Thames before tapes around the site to allow the work to be done were removed and the public allowed to wander freely among the lights. As darkness fell and the beams became more visible, hundreds of others were attracted - like moths to a flame. Most silent in awe at this spectacle which has to be experienced in person to truly understand how amazing it is.

“A century ago, Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey declared, ‘The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.’
“100 years after Britain declared war on Germany, lights across the country were extinguished. At 11pm - the time of the declaration a century ago - a single candle remained on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey. Simultaneously a column of white light soared into the sky over London.
A twenty-metre grid containing forty-nine searchlights installed at Victoria Tower Gardens forms spectra by Ryoji Ikeda. Unannounced, it appeared in the sky at dusk Monday August 4 2014 and for seven nights only it will be visible across the city between sunset and sunrise. People can walk within the grid of lights, experiencing a specially composed soundtrack by Ikeda. Walking through these sinewaves, a personal musical score is created for each visitor at the source of this architectural intervention in the sky.”

Inspired by Nancy's "Pretty Things" pictures, this is my kitchen window, with Irish lace curtains, apothecary bottles and a pink flamingo.
The kinds of things you find when emptying cupboards. On the right is "coffee replacement" ("does not contain coffee"), I don't know from when! Definitely going back in the cupboard, it's antique.

I've been tagged four times, so I shall see if I can come up with 16 things you may or may not know about me...
1) I've never met another person with my first name.
2) I eloped. (as a side note, our parents have never met)
3) I got married when I did (December 28th) to save money on our taxes.
4) I do a mean Karen Carpenter impersonation, but you may have to get me drunk to hear it.
5) I sing and write music with my husband, and have won several songwriting awards (and yet still toil in obscurity).
6) I nearly drowned on my only white river rafting trip when the boat capsized. I can't swim, but it wouldn't have helped if I could (I was stuck in a hydraulic, and was lucky enough that it finally spun me out instead of under/to the bottom one more time.)
7) I am obsessed with all things Bloomsbury.
8) I've been a runner for fourteen and a half years.
9) I've been a vegetarian for almost three and a half years. Before that we low-carbed for six years.
10) If I can't fall asleep, I listen to old recordings of Hall-of-Famer baseball announcer Ernie Harwell calling a couple of Detroit Tigers baseball games from the 2000 season on my iPod.
11) I used to write over 300 hand written letters a year.
12) My favorite movies are Frida, Carrington, and The Hunger.
13) I'm pretty sure I had salmonella poisoning two weeks ago, courtesy of a Peanut Butter Crunch Clif bar.
14) My favorite book is A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.
15) I do not cry. I cry so infrequently that I can usually keep track of the last time I actually did cry. Right now we're at four years and counting, and my mom died in those four years, so you can tell that I just really ... don't.
16) I've seen Heart in concert 15 times.

When life gets on top of you, don't forget to stop from time to time and see the wonder in the smallest of things.
