The theme for this month for my office photo club was "Patterns and Repetition", and despite having taken a reasonable number of photos over the month, none of them really fit the theme all that well. So, I broke out a bag of clear glass marbles to see what I could come up with. After one or two failed concepts, I decided to just arrange them carefully in one of my aluminum sheet pans, taking the "pattern" idea quite literally.
I was happy with the initial shots, but they captured the room in each individual sphere, which could have been interesting in some other room, but wasn't all that flattering in my kitchen. To compensate, I arranged a makeshift light tent around the marble (I just leaned two pieces of white foam core board in a A-frame shape, and covered the rear opening with parchment paper.) Shot one of my SB-700s through the paper, and dialed in an exposure that I liked. Cropped in post, added a little structure in Nik Viveza, and boosted vibrance just a hair in Aperture. The one marble with a bit more color was happy circumstance; I think it was picking up a marble that wasn't completely clear combined with a little of the incandescent room light peeking in through the front from just the right angle. I really like the end result.
Nikon D7000 w/Nikkor 18-300mm @ 300mm, 1/250s @ ƒ/22, ISO100. Single SB-700 @ 1/10 power, 24mm zoom, shot from about 2' behind the subject through parchment with white bounce cards left and right (as described above.)
no idea why this little bridge has these lines painted on it ... but it's handy for this week's theme ;)
In aa row of otherwise yellow brick houses, this minimalist house with its door matching car, made for quite a nice composition. I particularly liked how the house is not only white, but also framed by the black drainpipes on the visible edges.

This particular shot is one for a group here on Flickr ( Weekly Photo Challenge ) that hosts a weekly photo challenge for all of its members. The idea is that they provide you with a theme and you have a week to come up with an idea and produce the shot. Depending on what the theme is, it can really make you work outside of your comfort zone as it forces you to look at things differently than you may have before. In this instance, the weekly challenge was to shoot a name brand and this is my entry for the challenge. The hard part wasn't coming up with a brand to shoot (Guinness is a pretty obvious choice for me) but actually coming up with a decent shot was. I haven't really tried any shots like this in the past so there was quite a bit of experimentation before coming up with the final product.
This particular shot was taken on the antique wooden chest that we are currently using as a coffee table. I placed a piece of glass on on top of it so I could create a faint reflection and then placed a black backdrop behind the subjects. The only light I used was from the living room window. I did do some editing in CS3 before adding the border and that was it. One of the best parts about the whole exercise was that besides learning a few things along the way, I got to drink my subject afterwards. :-)
As always, any comments and suggestions on how to improve are appreciated. :-)
Coffee and cigarettes have always gone together. They are commonly seen as a staple of the artist lifestyle, iggy pop and Tom Waits gave even started in a film attributed to this idea. cups and saucers also demonstrate the theme of coffee. I used a black background to accentuate the colour of coffee and contrast the colour of porcelain.

Sometimes I receive e-mails from my sweet customers with photos of how my framed prints look on their walls. And it totally makes my day!
Here are photos of a gorgeous woodland themed nursery designed by Kelsey in US. She says: "Everything started with some paintings I had in my nursery when I was little. They were painted by my aunt on small pieces of wood. We didn't know if we were having a boy or girl so the woodland nursery was a neutral choice. We had a boy! He is our first. I had a lot of fun putting some finishing touches on the nursery once he arrived - like the white antlers!"
Isn't this nursery gorgeous?! Full of cute details! And her aunt’s work is adorable! My Fox must be really happy living among all those beauties!
Thank you Kelsey!
The theme for this week's photo is "the earth". I wasn't too sure what route to take with this theme as it felt, to me, more like the earth as the planet we live on rather than actual earth (like soil). If I were going on a plane this week I could have taken a photo looking down to earth. The best I could come up with is this really old, twisted tree, which looks like it's trying to return to the earth! It's actually got a couple of supports to hold some of its limbs up.
