Over the past year, as I've experimented with different techniques and looked, I've been drawn to using some interesting overlays that others have offered up.
To give a little back, here's one of my own - a textured burlap.
Feel free to download and use at will. I'd love to see what you come up with.

We're human. We make mistakes and we do good things, but we're incredibly flawed creatures. We're also unbelievably blessed, in some things.
Photography helps us (helps me, at least) to escape from that human side and to become something more. With the help of a few tools, we can fly, or run with a cheetah, or illuminate a jar. But as soon as the lights are off and the photo is posted, we go back to being humans, to being the flawed creatures we were meant to be. And sometimes, being human means you hurt, and you ache, and that you spend a day knowing that the only thing you want to do is send someone a message saying you miss them. And you know you shouldn't. You know they probably don't even miss you back. But you do, and you need them to know that.
And then comes the self-control, and the ability to keep ourselves from doing things that we think will cause us pain. So we don't hit send on that message, we tuck our phones back into our pockets and we keep on walking, keep on talking to someone else or start the car to get out of that spot. We take a deep breath and try to forget everything. But we're flawed. And while most times we can forget, sometimes we just can't.

week 12
I ran out of time again this week, we have a lot going on in the background so I apologise for the lazy image. Yes I know its rubbish but it is what it is.
Process :found a rotted leaf, threw it on our skanky outdoor table, chucked up a portable flash and metered to f8, used the gary fong only to reduce spill as i was a touch slack. (if i had thought about it I would have made the shadow more of a feature by making it longer) then on the same sd card took photos of the worn 60s painted red concrete, a limestone block, a dirty window (and there are many) and a fly screen. blended in ps in multiple modes, opacities and the screen had levels boosted.
will throw textures up if anyone needs them, use as you require, they are licensed for creative commons.
Just a few backgrounds/textures for you to use or play around with. No time for anything else!
Thanks to playing with brushes for the background

Derived image. I imagine this as large tiles on a bathroom wall that cross nicely for the initiated.
From a succulent vertical wall garden at the 2009 San Francisco Flower and Garden show - I thought the textures and pattern in this photo were so very interesting....

Looking at one of the faces of the Richard Serra sculpture-I love the textures and patterns. This one isn't elephant hide like, but it's still pretty attractive.

The kind of shot I've been dreaming of taking, and a strong argument in favour of the proposition that shooting Velvia 5x4 is awesome for close detail work.
Best viewed on a massive screen!
