The moment I turned around for one last look over the island of Llanddwyn and saw this scene I had to capture it, and I knew instantly and exactly what the final image would look like. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to my photography. I'm not one for using special filters, HDR, frames and textures or any of the other hundred and 1 ways to manipulate an image – I do enough of that at work but this was one of the few occasions when I knew I would have to actually 'create' more than just 'enhance' to arrive at the vision in my head. I blame it on my love affair with cinema and in this particular case, horror films, not the slasher/monster/gore stuff but films like The Haunting, Nosferatu, Whistle and I Will Come…virtually without exception B/W films full of menacing shadows and things that move out of the corner of your eye, films that leave you deeply unsettled/creeped out, wary of dark places, that plague your thoughts for days and nights (especially nights!) or even years after you've seen them. And so it was with this scene, there was something unsettling and otherworldly about the silhouetted figure standing there beside those ruins, that echoed the images from all those films I'd seen… in reality of course it's just an ordinary visitor like myself standing there enjoying the view, but after reading an information board next to ruins that told of its prior history as the Church of St Dwynwen, my mind and imagination saw something other than the mundane, responded otherwise emotionally to what I saw than if I hadn't read of its earlier life. And here is that history;

"The lady Dwynwen lived during the 5th century AD and was one of 24 daughters of St. Brychan, a Welsh prince of Brycheiniog (Brecon). She fell in love with a young man named Maelon, but rejected his advances. This, depending on which story you read, was either because she wished to remain chaste and become a nun or because her father wished her to marry another. She prayed to be released from the unhappy love and dreamed that she was given a potion by an angel to do this. However, when Maelon drank the potion he turned to ice. She then prayed that she be granted three wishes: 1) that Maelon be revived, 2) that all true lovers find happiness, and 3) that she should never again wish to be married. She then retreated to the solitude of Llanddwyn Island to follow the life of a hermit.

Dwynwen later became known as the Welsh patron saint of friendship and lovers and pilgrimages were made to her holy well on the island."

So, with all that 'stuff' – tragic and unrequited love, primordial fears, gothic cinema – going on in my head this is what finally emerged from that mixed up melting pot. It'll not be to everyone's taste, or possibly not even to anyone's taste, but it is to mine and I'm pleased with how closely it fits that initial vision in my head on that afternoon and reflects how I felt.
