37116 + D400 Fearless heads away from Water Orton light engine en route to Nuneaton with both locos on a test run.

My first sighting of one of the new CAF Class 196s built for West Midlands Railway – is it me, or is there something SciFi-ish about the front end? Shame the autofocus wasn’t playing ball, focusing on the front of would have been so much better. Anyway, 196103 is seen here running milage accumulation as the 5Q34 15:18 Crewe to Tyseley LMD, just south of Stableford on the West Coast Main Line on Monday 26th October 2020.

 

The are essentially the same as the Norther Rail Class 195s based on the Civity platform, but with an end gangway. CAF are building 12 two care units and 14 four car units

Class 43 power cars 43058 (leading) and 43059 (trailing) power Locomotive Services Limited's short HST set through Hartford whilst on a training run between Carnforth and Crewe (5Z44). The full run was from Crewe to Carnforth, then to Rugby, before returning to base at Crewe.

 

It is believed that this set will end up in InterCity livery in the fullness of time (and be a bit longer too!).

My personal "maiden ride" onboard of the new CAF Urbos 100 - GVB 15G tram during a test run with passengers. The interior of the 3006 (connected with 3005 on the Beneluxbaan. This tram was limited at Stadshart (terminus of line 5) due to some technical issues at Station Zuid.

This tram had been delivered to the GVB one year plus one day ago!

This 15G tram 3006 built by CAF was delivered to the GVB on 09/12/2019.

DBS Skoda 90020 on hire to DRS leading brand new DRS class 68 No 68002 pictured passing Euxton at high speed. This is the first high speed test run for the new class 68 which arrived in January of this year.

CAF Urbos 100 GVB 15G 3014 during a testrun on line 25 three days prior to the opening of this new tram line. Tram stop Poortwachter used to the the terminus of the previous light rail line 51 from 1990 till 2004 when tramline 51 was extended to Westwijk.

This CAF Urbos 100 GVB 15G 3024 has been delivered to the GVB in 2020.

DB BR 146 566-5 in InterCity IC Livery with a new Bombardier Twindexx Vario/IC-Dosto Composition on a Testrun passing through Oberwesel

Locomotive Services Limited Class 87 no. 87002, 'Royal Sovereign', makes its way north past Cathiron (north of Rugby station) working 5Z87 Rugby- Crewe H.S. test run on 4th June 2020.

 

Having worked south from Crewe H.S. on 5Z86 to Rugby in push mode with a 'Hornby style' rake made up of ex-Greater Anglia Mk3 FOs 11091, 11075, Mk3 TSOB 10416 and Mk3 DVT no. 82139, this marks the first class 87 to work with a push-pull set on the mainline in a very long time (the last I can think of is around 2006, but I am happy to be proven wrong).

 

87002 looks cracking in Intercity livery and is a machine that I am happy to photograph over, and over, and over again.

It is now strange to think that this wonderful machine was once part of a 36 strong fleet, pride of the WCML. It was thought that this loco would never work again under it's own power but its fortunes could not have reversed more quickly. The Italian built Class 390 'Pendolino' trains replaced the much loved Class 87s between 2002 and 2006 and the majority of the rest of the fleet has been exported to Bulgaria. 87001 and 87035 are both in the country as static exhibits. A very sad state of affairs when you start sending working, powerful AC Electric locomotives abroad whilst at the same time there is a real shortage for electric traction.

 

From 2015, 87002 was deployed as one of 3 ACLG machines to be used on sleeper ECS duties with the new Serco franchise. Each night and morning, 87002, 86401 & 86101 were used between Euston and Wembley on the ECS and occasionally, the locomotives got a blast north on the main sleepers to Scotland. In 2019, 87002 and 86101 were retired from sleeper duties and both sold to Locomotive Services Limited (LSL) in Crewe. 86401 has been sold to the West Coast Railway Company (WCRC) and is currently at Carnforth.

SNCF E-loc BB 20011, uitgerust met draaistroom tractiemotoren, is bezig met een aantal proefritten in Nederland en passeert met de proeftrein aan de haak het station van Woerden. In korte tijd werden er, door een groot deel van het land, vele proefritten gereden met deze combinatie van E-loc en (meet)rijtuigen.

 

SNCF E-loc BB 20011 on a testrun, with a special test train behind it, on one of its testtrips through the Netherlands has just passed the station from Woerden.

NSR ICNG 3116 did two instruction runs today. This shot is from the second run at the station of Haarlem, where the train halted for 30 minutes at track 5.

At the right is a Sprinter Light Train or SLT 2618 in Haarlem - Leiden v.v. commuter service.

BR Standard Class 8 steam locomotive 71000 "Duke of Gloucester". The Riddles 4-6-2 Pacific was on one of its first test runs on the Severn Valley Railway on Thursday 22nd May 2025. It had been running, light engine, up and down the heritage line from Kidderminster to Highley and back. Duke of Gloucester is pictured heading north on Falling Sands Viaduct in Kidderminster.

The First Of The 999 BR Standard Locomotives, 70000 'Britannia' Complete With 'The East Anglian' Headboard Along With 37688 'Great Rocks' Almost Hidden In The Fog On Rear, Applies Some Power As It Get A Clean Run To Stafford Road Junction With 5P55, The 12.42 Coton Hill to Crewe Test Run.

 

The Train Was Booked To Run Into The Down Loop But Was 20 Minutes Early And Carried On Round To The Chord Lines And Waited In Bushbury Goods Loop Instead.

 

The Weather After A Lovely Sunny Start To The Day, Had Long Since Settled Into A Day Of Fog Somewhat Spoiling The One Time I'm In Oxley When These Run.

DB Cargo Class 90, 90039 "The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport" in its somewhat ironic "I am the backbone of the economy" special corporate livery returns through Chorlton on its way back from a test run to Stafford.

 

90039 had failed two weeks earlier (6th January) on 4M25 and ended up blocking the entrance to Basford Hall for a couple of hours. It had been at Crewe ETD since then undergoing repairs, with this run being to prove they had done the trick.

 

The "Blackbone" Skoda's trip to Stafford and back was running as 0Z90 08:27 Crewe Electric Traction Maintenance Depot to Crewe Electric Traction Maintenance Depot.

Design Challenge entry: 'Lasagna Lake by Su_G for Lake' in a coloring in test run

My entry in the Food Frenzy Coloring Book Design Challenge - for the Lake interactive coloring app, inspired by a favorite food: lasagna!

This was my coloring in test and I'm pleased to say that it worked well. This was a half vegetarian lasagna but clearly the possibilities are endless!

LNER A4 Pacific No. 60009 'Union Of South Africa' dodges shadows in the Wenning Valley on a loaded test run on the Carnforth-Hellifield-Preston-Carnforth circuit on 4 February 2020 after leaving the East Lancashire Railway in the early morning.

NS E-loc 1609 staat met het MW meetrijtuig en de Coda E trein aan de haak gereed voor een volgende proefrit.

Being built by the Meyer dockyard at Papenburg/Ems it was then temporarily stationed at Eemshaven (NL) for further testing and internal completion. It was visible during the test runs very close to Borkum island. Have a look at the long chute for fun between the two red quad flue pipes!

Only the friendly people are welcome in the photos I make with the new (to me) Canon EF70-200 f/2.8L IS III USM I bought second hand (but as good as new) on MarketPlace.

 

I stopped buying new gear since I discovered that there is a large second hand market of good quality products, well taken care of and at very reasonable prices from private persons!

 

I got this lens for half the price what it would cost in a shop and it was probably only used 5 times. It even feels new! Good deal!!

 

Amsterdam is opening up again, after more than two years of Corona. On my testrun with the new to me lens this lady came skating by.

The temporary bus line 55 crosses here at Middenhoven test-driving tram line 25. Test drives with passengers, so they had the choice between the bus and the new tram line these days (from 09/12/2020 travelers were allowed to join). Bus line 55 ran for the last time on December 12. The new Amsterlveen line (25) was opened on 13 December. The official online opening took place with this tram 3023.

The bi-articulated bus with fleet number 335 is an articulated Mercedes Citaro that was delivered to the GVB on 10/12/2007 and is part of the series of low-floor buses 301-340..

The CAF Urbos 100 GVB 15G tram 3023 was delivered to the GVB in 2020.

Hull Trains 802304 again did the training run from Bounds Green to Edinburgh (5S93). It it seen approaching Dunbar under a cloudless sky. Fortunately, being by the coast there was a pleasant cool breeze coming off the North Sea.

 

The housing estate has been built since my last visit here in May 2017.

GBRf owned, Serco Caledonian Sleeper liveried class 92 no. 92014 leads classmate no. 92010 dead in tow and the SRPS Mk1 set through Nuneaton in between showers on 15th June 2016 with 5Z93 Rugby-> Crewe CS empty coaching stock move. I presume this was some sort of test run for the class 92.

 

46 Class 92 locomotives were built by a BRUSH- ABB consortium between 1993 and 1996. The locomotives are dual voltage and can take power from both the 25kv AC overhead lines or 750 DC third rail. They were split between Railfreight distribution, European Passenger Services and the SNCF however, the EPS and SNCF locos saw little use. The Railfreight distribution locomotives were initially troublesome as the amount of power that they draw was too much for the power supply on the northern WCML- this necessitated dragging of the locos to Crewe IEMD for maintenance. As of 2009, several EWS machines were equipped with TVM signalling to make them suitable to work through the channel tunnel- all such trains must run through the tunnel double headed to reduce the chance of failure.

 

DB Shenker own the majority of the fleet with 30 ex railfreight distribution machines. Until recently, they were underutilised and many spent time stored at Crewe electric. It would appear that the electrical problems with the OHLE have been resolved and as a consequence, 92s can be seen in daylight on the southern and northern WCML on a regular basis. During 2012, some locomotives were exported to Bulgaria. Many of the DBS Fleet are painted in DB Shenker red with the remainder painted in Railfreight triple grey with 'EWS' stickers.

 

GBRf/ Europorte now own the 16 EPS/ SNCF locomotives. Only five out of the fleet are currently operational however, the remaining 11 locomotives are now based at BRUSH in Loughborough awaiting returns to service. 92032 has been painted in the distinctive GBRf 'Bluebird' colour scheme however, the remainder of the GBEP fleet is painted in Railfreight distribution triple grey with large 'Europorte 2' disks. 92010 and 92044 do not even have this branding.

 

All locomotives have 3 'tunnel rings' on the bodyside and some are fitted with a high-intensity tunnel light. Most of the 46 locomotives were originally named after famous composer

Having just dumped the fire, A2 986 rests over the pit at Newport Workshops.

 

For the first time in nearly 52 years since it was withdrawn from the Victorian Railways and nearly 100 years since built, A2 986 returns to the mainline!

 

Nearly 5 months ago, A2 986 operated for the first time under its own power around Newport Workshops and today onto the mainline!

 

A2 986 began mainline testing operating a series of trips between Newport and Sunshine. This allowed for testing at low speed in a controlled environment. Some adjustments have been found to fix at a later date though the overall testing was a success.

While Southern Railway SD40 No. 3170 pulls the caboose train in the background, 611 is being fired up for the day's festivities.

London Underground 1938 stock driving coach No. 11012 passes North Ealing working Train No. 746 test run from Uxbridge to Acton Town in preparation for the 'Coronation Special' rail tours to be operated over the weekend 29th April to 1st May

Much more of a real-world test for the Class 93s as Rail Operation Group’s Class 93, 93006 leads Freightliner Class 66, 66512 through Hartford on 4S48 1915 Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal to Mossend PD Stirling.

 

Despite a total train weight of 1,619 tonnes and a total train length of 774 metres, 4S48 gained 8 minutes climbing Shap and 11 minutes climbing Beattock (against booked timings) suggesting the 93 performed well in the slippery November conditions.

After two and a half months at Crewe ETD for new wheelsets and various refurbishments and repairs, GB Railfreight Class 92, 92043 returns from a test run to Preston and back ahead of resuming Sleeper duties.

 

Passing Eaton Lane, just south of Hartford, the return trip was running as 0Z92 12:15 Preston to Crewe Electric Traction Maintenance Depot VSTP.
