Rebuilt SR 'Merchant Navy' Class Pacific No. 35018 'British India Line' masquerading as No. 98818 and carrying the nameplates from 'Bodmin' pulls away slowly from a lengthy inspection stop near Clapham station after reportedly suffering from a hot bearing during its first light mainline test run from Carnforth to Hellifield and back on 18 May 2017.
Clearly part of the disguise plan was to avoid direct sunlight and only perform in the shadows!

Rounding off three days of successful testing on its return to the mainline, DB Cargo's born-again Class 92, 92029 "Dante" flies through Acton Bridge with unneeded insurance loco, Class 90, 90035 in tow.
The third and final days testing of this initial stint involved a long run out to Carlisle and back - the first time a DB Cargo Class 92 had been north of Warrington since 2015. The return leg was running as 0Z92 13:27 Carlisle New Yard to Crewe Electric Traction Depot.
The Brush Traction locomotive has returned after eight years and two months in store and is poised to bolster DB's active UK Tunnel/HS1 fleet. Before that, though, an imminent trip to Toton's paint shop beckons.
Earlier today I learned that I had missed 46100 "Royal Scot" passing close to home en route to Shrewsbury from Crewe on a loaded test run. Fortunately, I was able to get over to Basford, south of Crewe, as the loco made its return (via Telford and Stafford) on the West Coast Main Line. The train was running about 15 minutes ahead of schedule and its arrival caught my cousin and I by surprise.

It's been a long wait, but six months after my last railway trip (to a cold and wet Ffestiniog Railway), I ended my steam drought on March 25 when 45231 passed through Wellington.
The Black Five has been operating a series of Locomotive Service Limited crew training trips during the week, running a circular route to and from Crewe via Chester, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton and Stafford.
Here it is seen here passing through Wellington in glorious spring sunshine.
This could have been a nice shot, if not the sun decided to hide behind a cloud. I tweaked this image somewhat in PS.

Wrapping up a week of successful loaded test-runs on the northern WCML, Rail Operations Group's Class 93s, 93007 (powering) and 93010 (DIT) pick up the pace through a rain-soaked Hartford with 1,800 tonnes on the draw-hook, running as 6Q09 2229 Crewe Basford Hall SSM to Carlisle New Yard.
This was the final run of the first week of testing, with the trailing weights stepping up each night. Later in the journey, the new Stadler tri-mode passed the most challenging test on these runs by re-started its load from Tebay and making it unassisted up Shap to the summit at a steady 16-17 mph. Not too shabby for a Bo-Bo!

As a natural consequence of the ever more complex gadgets and services, the need for some kind of software assistant arose. Going by many names and varying in functions and intelligence, Personal AIs are now a natural part of every mans day to day life. Personal AIs takes care of transactions, shopping, booking and household chores. Some people find it amusing to give their AIs personality and treat them as pets, others just use them as tools.
Personal AIs can transfer small parts of their core to machines in order to carry out various tasks. Shells are robotic machines that come in thousands of variants. Most Shells have their own governing AIs but they can also merge with Personal AIs and transfer their subroutines to them. Not many people can afford to choose other than the cheapest versions, but theoretically an AI can inhabit any Shell. Creative ways of using shells can of course be shared and downloaded by the AIs.
The Yogamabara Mechanization M-400 Multi-Purpose Shell is a commonly used type of shell. It’s very fast and agile. It gives the host AI the ability to follow it’s client around any ground based environment and has a full range of standard tools, like laser cutter, hydro spanners and standard data sockets to name a few. It’s animal-like form gives it personality and this has made Yogamabara one of the biggest manufacturers of Personal AI Shells.
Get yours today! Let your personal AI schedule a meeting and a free* testrun!
* Your AI will be analyzed and mined for suspicious behaviour, transactions and interactions.

For the first time in nearly 52 years since it was withdrawn from the Victorian Railways and nearly 100 years since built, A2 986 returns to the mainline!
Nearly 5 months ago, A2 986 operated for the first time under its own power around Newport Workshops and today onto the mainline!
Here the pairing of A2 986 and T395 leave Newport Workshops with the first run as 0580.
A2 986 began mainline testing operating a series of trips between Newport and Sunshine. This allowed for testing at low speed in a controlled environment. Some adjustments have been found to fix at a later date though the overall testing was a success.
A T class diesel (no. 395) was used to provide a modest load for A2 986, to provide a train to base radio for communication and to help with driver training of V/Line crews on the goods only railway line to Sunshine.

Locomotive Services Limited's Class 90, 90001 "Royal Scot" arrives back into the former Platform 1 at Crewe with the first test run of a full rake of InterCity-liveried Mk3s and a DVT.
Looking in ex-works condition, the 90 and its rake definitely recreate the 90s feel (pun intended!).
The inbound path was 5T91 19:16 Rugby to Crewe Holding Sidings, although it started at Amington Junction after 90001 encountered issues there on the outward leg.
These issues led to 001 being pulled from the inaugural tour two days later and sister Skoda 002 stepping up to work the train.

DB Cargo's Class 90, 90026 completes another successful test run from Crewe ETD to Stafford and back, running as 0Z90.
The Skoda is one of five that will be allocated to the pool to work the new Grand Central open access services from Euston to Blackpool and was the first to be repainted into the Grand Central colours. 020, 021, 029 and 039 are the other four 90s planned for the pool.
90026 now sports the 'normal' Grand Central orange stripe rather than the yellow one it was originally out-shopped from Toton with.
With the DDA laws bringing to an end the use of their open top Bristol VRs which have for many years given fine service on their 100 service between Totnes-Paignton & Torquay a more modern low floor replacement had to be sought and they are in the form of a pair of former London General Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs, Y812TGH & Y827TGH. Over the Winter period the pair have been converted from dual-door closed tops to single front entrance open toppers. Y812TGH being the only one of the 4 President bodied B7TLs, Y808/12/16/27TGH, to not have enter service for RRL in closed top format.
Pictured whilst on a test run prior to hopefully entering service in very near future, Y812TGH sits in the center of Totnes, whilst non converted closed top sister bus, Y816TGH, arrives to work a 100 service to Paignton.

There was a welcome return of main line steam in the south of England on 7 May 2021, when the Belmond Pullman set was headed by its stalwart motive power; Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' pacific 35028 'Clan Line'. This was a test run prior to passenger workings resuming after 17 May, and carried no passengers. The run was from and to London Victoria, via Kensington Olympia, and water was taken at Chertsey rather than Shalford, as the new 3tph timetable on the North Downs line precludes a long stop there. Future normal Belmond workings will have this water stop regime, but it's not known whether Olympia will be the normal route. The train is seen climbing the 1 in 144 bank to Betchworth summit, passing the village of Brockham. The defunct Betchworth quarry workings are in the foreground with Leith Hill, the highest point in SE England, beyond. Best viewed large.

With the lush parkland grass south of Long Preston station at Hospital Bridge reflecting from the gleaming black paintwork of 'Merchant Navy' Pacific 35018 (formerly named 'British India Line'), the missing smokebox numberplate (replaced by a steciled number) and sans nameplates, the surface rust on the running plates and smokebox, and the bright red bufferbeam and burnished buffers, this sight took me straight back to my teenage years towards the end of B.R. steam on the Southern Region. This particular locomotive was withdrawn from Nine Elms shed almost three years before the last of the Bulleids were taken out of service but its subsequent despatch to Woodham's Scrapyard at Barry became its eventual saviour. Whatever its colour, it is still a fine locomotive and credit is due to the West Coast Railway Company team for bringing it back into mainline service; I very much look forward to witnessing some Bulleid Pacific action on a more regular basis in the years ahead. The temperature was unfortunately too high on this day for the locomotive to produce any kind of noticeable exhaust on this downhill section whilst not being fired, but this shot of it just south of Long Preston station was a "Brucie Bonus", with this 5M50 loaded test run from Carnforth being held at Settle Junction in order to allow both up and down service trains on the Settle-Carlisle line to pass.

Steam locomotive 60532 Blue Peter is pictured on the Severn Valley Railway near Eardington. It is on a test run between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth on the morning of Friday April 12th 2024.
With the engineer on board who led the project to reinstate this locomotive in 2019/2020 when both were at DB Cargo, Locomotive Services Group's latest acquisition, Class 90, 90026 makes its debut for its new owners - flying through Hartford with 5Z47 0930 Crewe Holding Sidings to Carnforth North Junction.
As well as giving 90026 its first test run under its new ownership, the trip to Carnforth was also being used to shakedown the Statesman Rail stock post-refurbishment, ahead of returning to revenue-earning service later in the week.
The southbound leg of the run would also allow 90002 "Wolf of Badenoch" (on the rear in this photo) a run out after traction motor repairs.
