He entered the kitchen just as she was standing up, and she smiled widely at him, trying hard to keep her position relaxed.
He stood still for a second, looking as if he were debating going further into the room. He decided quickly, his foot merely hesitating a fraction of an inch as he switched direction to go around the middle island, and he smiled wanly at her as he reached for the refrigerator door.
She watched him stoop low as he rummaged through for a beer, noticing how his jaw bunched tensely before he turned and held the bottle up as if it were an explanation for his entry into the room. Before she knew it, he was already halfway across the room and on his way out into the hall again.
She couldn’t take it anymore.
