Dawn at Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado … the sun is trying to break through the storm clouds over the Sangre de Cristo Range and I’m trying to hold my camera steady in the wind.
(Underexposure to tame highlights and increase shutter speed.)
A half-hour of dramatic clouds and sharp light yielded some nice images, but ended in an anticlimactic little rain shower.

We didn't really set out to do some storm chasing that day, but we did manage to get into it quite intensely that July afternoon. This was just the beginning.

An ancient battered Plymouth resting beside the trail at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. Big Morongo Canyon was a working ranch until 1968 when the Nature Conservancy purchased part of it to protect its rare and endangered wildlife. Now it's been much enlarged and is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. I was surprised they left the old ranch car, but it's part of the history of the place. For some reason, it was the only thing I photographed that day! California, US
